I saw the recent thread on players of the 00s where the names of Ablett, Buddy etc were mentioned and rightfully so. Where does the Bont sit in this? He is having the 2nd highest rated season of all time currently and should be a 2 x Brownlow winner (robbed). Is just about to notch up his 6th AA and has won a flag.

From a player standpoint he's 6ft 4 and can literally play anywhere and dominate. He's been universally recognised as the best player in the game for the last 4 to 5 years. What does the bont need to do to get his standing with the Judd's, Abletts, Buddy's etc?

Have reserved my judgement for a long because I've seen many outstanding Dogs players since the 60s but now of the opinion that Bont is the best Bulldog of my time.

With Richards' emergence in the middle, I think Bont will spend more time up forward to preserve his body and extend his playing future.

Can hold his place in the top echelon of the game's modern day best.

Definitely in the top echelon. Does his era include Ablett & Buddy? If so he’s top 5, behind them & Hodge I reckon. But that seems more like the era before him.

If it’s more 2015-2025 then probably only 2nd to Dusty for me, but no strong arguments to not say first.

Not sure he’s been robbed of Brownlows, it’s just hard to win a Brownlow with the prime midfielders racing to 30 odd votes. You can take a pick of 3 or 4 in any given year - hasn’t fallen his way yet. For me it’s not what is missing from his resume - it’s a flag in his prime.

Agree with the era with Dusty rather than Ablett etc. Good call

Of players drafted since 2000, I reckon Ablett and Franklin are a clear 1 and 2. Then there is a group that includes Judd, Martin and Dangerfield. I would now have Bont as part of that group. Next group is guys like Riewoldt, Hodge, Pendles, Stewart, Pavlich, Gawn, Selwood, Fyfe, Swan ect.

I expect him to overtake Danger and could finish as high as number 3.

1. Ablett
2. Franklin
3. Judd
4. Martin
5. Dangerfield
6. Bontompelli
7. Riewoldt
8. Selwood
9. Pavlich
10. Gawn

In my biased eyes, I see him as one of the all time greats. He still has to achieve a lot more to be a top 5-10 player of all time. Needs a Brownlow, a Norm Smith and another Premiership as Captain. He will get his 6th All Australian this year and the record is currently 8. He might be a chance to break that or atleast end up on 8.

He is a complete player. Can play in any position, great leader, great endurance, footy IQ and skills Elite, strong, great in the air. Hard to find a flaw. Will be interesting how his career ends up but needs to take the Bulldogs to the promise land again to be considered one of the all time greats.

He's ok. Slightly behind Lewis Taylor and Ollie Wines IMO.

Better than the Pendlebury, Selwood, Neale 3rd tier

Is in the 2nd tier with Danger, Fyfe, Hird etc

1st tier is Ablett, Buddy, Dusty, Judd and Voss
I think he is up with Dusty and ahead of Judd.

Dusty possibly the best big game player of all of them but only 2017 had him really doing it week to week like Bont has since his first year.

The fact that Neale has two Browlows and Bontempeli has none is unreal.....

Will people in 50 years not remember how good Bont was and instead be like "2x Brownlow medalist Lachie Neale was way better"

Cleansweep17 - your thoughts?

(This is the poster who has D. Martin as the GOAT, though would rate him significantly lower had Houli received the 2017 Norm Smith Medal ahead of Martin).

As poor as the Brownlow is as an indicator of the best player in a given season, the legacy aspect of it is huge for any players career. It would be sad if the Bont didn't win one - it would mean that his excellence would be more likely to be overshadowed in a generation's time by his contemporaries. He's clearly the best since Danger and Dusty, and will likely be held in similar acclaim by career's end. He's well on target to play at least 350+ games, and will likely extend his career by playing in the forwardline so I wouldn't be shocked if he racks up the goals in that area.

He'll easily be the best Dog of all time if his career ended tomorrow. It remains to be seen where he'll land in terms of the all-time and era discussions, which will be very nuanced.

It's unfortunate that he didn't receive a couple more votes in 2021 and 2023, and lost to players who had an inferior years. I think dual Brownlow medallist on top of his other accomplishments and just watching how good he is and how hard he carries his team would see people view him as one of the GOATs.

There may be some recency bias as there is a school of thought from 50's and 60's that has Whitten as the best of all.

Picked at CHB in Team of the Century but was also a contender for CHF.
To be better than Whitten, would put Bont in the all time greats.
