PNG simply wont have the cash or the ability to attract players IMO. I would love to see that happen but, being realistic, I cant see it happening in the forseeable future.
Port Moresby is one of the most dangerous and lawless cities on earth. Up there with Jo'burg, Lagos etc. Imagine wanting to live there.

so i consider myself more of a league fan than AFL these days, but even i can't figure out the reason for or need for an expansion in the NRL.

the AFL does it to try and increase tv revenue. the NRL can't even get a fair price for what they are now.

and unlike the AFL, which has a few clubs that struggle finanicially, league has the majority of clubs that live and die by an outdated leagues club model.

realistically, these are the holes (ranked in order of being deserving - i'm not going to guess who would add the most to the game)

1. 2nd brisbane team
2. central coast
3. rockhampton
4. perth

but there is not the money, nor do i believe there is the interest in rugby leage for a 20 team comp.

so teams have to go. its a bad time for someone like cronulla to not be challenging for the finals. conversely, its a very good time for the dragons to be dominating.

i guess the irony is that if the nrl were to start kicking out clubs to make way for new ones... well, they probably wouldn't be the sydney teams that live in each others backyard. first would be cronulla, second would be canberra and third would be a news limited-less storm.

if we're to expand to 18, the teams need to be in brisbane and central coast to add value to the comp. the other 2 options don't add anywhere near as much value, nor do they have enough of a sustained push to get the club up, running and sustainable over a long period of time.

Are the CC really serious about a team?

The didn't really vote with their feet last night.

No they didn't, but its really a difficult one because the Bears (and say the Perth Reds) want to watch their own team play, not the Sharks and Bulldogs.

What I think is that if the Bears were admitted as one of the new expansion teams, people will initially turn up in droves, then their nos. will settle down to the 10-12,000 range as per normal for most r/l teams these days, except for the occasional bigger derbies.

Will this be sufficient to drive up the next tv rights deal?

I would really hate to be the NRL in making a decision on who these new teams should be.

Sharks/Dogs was in Gosford, right? Didn't see what the crowd was, but it didn't look very big to me.

Of course I suppose you could say it was *only* the Sharks and the Dogs... :)

[edit] Oh, that was what AuckMel meant in #31?

I remember commenting a few weeks back that the Dogs hardly deserved to win games when they left their potential match-winner Barba on the bench until the last twenty minutes. Now it seems they've found the courage to at least play 40 minutes of football and find a lead, as has happened in their last couple of games. Fallible in defence he may be, but he does make tries and score them.

Poor crowd. As has pointed out, the games that get taken there are low drawing games anyway by clubs looking for a quick buck. Should still do better than they have been, although the positives are that they seem to be getting a fair few people involved in memberships and behind the CC Bears themselves, if not watching 13th vs 14th.

But im completely biased in that I just want the Bears back essentially. I would be lucky to make it to many gosford games at all if they were readmitted, simply because of Uni and sporting commitments that make it difficult to work a 5 hour round trip around, but many Sydney/Wollongong games i'll be there and any North Sydney Oval game I'll be there with bells on.

Will this be sufficient to drive up the next tv rights deal?

What connection do you think crowds have to the television deal? :D ;)

Television is about people watching at home, not being in attendance.

Foxtel would LOVE for the CC Bears to be attracting 10k at the ground with 100k subscribing to watch on tv.
