Gold Coast

Hell no
Now obviously I am biased and I like to think Gold Coast is closer because, y'know, rose-coloured glasses and all
But West Coast are a proven final 8 team over most of their journey.

But what do you, the good folk of BigFooty think?

Comparing lists, ages, upcoming retirements, etc

I'm pro Gold Coast expansion but unless the AFL step in and assist the club on and off the field, then it won't be in existence within 5 years

If Gold Coast don't see out 5 years, then the answer is cleary WCE as they are a proven dominant club in the competition

If Gold Coast are to survive, they need to really thrive on the park and win a flag within 5 years

IF we use your comparison suggestions:
List - Gold Coast.
Age - Gold Coast.
Upcoming retirements - Gold Coast.

BUT the really important things:
Coaching - WC by a long way.
Culture - WC by a long way. WC expect to win the flag and will be driven to do so.

IF the GC can fix their culture and get in good coaches, then they will win a flag.

WC will probably win another flag in the next ten years. GC will hopefully start making finals in the next five years….

I hope I am wrong about GC.

Why would the AFL funnel hundreds of millions into the Suns only to let them die by 2030?

They won't.

People are far too simple when assessing the Gold Coast's viability.

Junior participation in QLD is booming, which also includes girls/women's teams, which was the entire point of the GC team to begin with and explains Brisbane's massive funding.

2 of the 3 largest Auskick centres in the country are in Brisbane, so the Lions doing well is massively boosting interest also.

There is zero chance AFL let GC fail, under any circumstances. It's not the team performing well that matters, although that'd definitely help, it's the boost in grass roots footy that ultimately matters to the AFL and the 2 QLD teams have delivered in spades on that front.

Just look at both academies and the high end talent they are producing, just for starters.

Considering the hundreds of millions of dollars the WA govt are reporedly handing the WA NRL bid, the AFL should really have asked the QLD govt for a much more substantial contribution to the Suns.

That could cost the wa govt the election

The Gold Coast in theory should be, as the Eagles have a long rebuild ahead of them and the Suns should already be playing finals with their current list. While the West Coast Eagles have been able to bounce back from poor seasons very quickly in the past and return as premiership contenders sooner rather than later, this time there seems something different about the current Eagles. It's not a good change, and TBH I'm not sure the club has really learned from the mistakes that led to a fast decline from 2019 onwards following the 2018 flag.

However the Gold Coast Suns have played 14 years now and are still to make the finals, or even having a positive win-loss season record. It's getting harder with each year that passes to imagine them actually playing in an Elimination Final, much less winning a Grand Final. It's therefore far easier to imagine the West Coast Eagles returning to finals action and claiming a flag, with the only September action seen by the Gold Coast a late finishing season in which the last weekend of the season is on the first weekend in September.

What more can they do.seriously?

Honestly rather than stressing about the Gold coast been party time and a bad influence the suns should embrace it. Just like Geelong do with their "country living"
What young motivated man or woman wouldn't want to live there train hard enjoy the lifestyle and kick the footy on the weekend. And if you want a change you are flying interstate every 2nd weekend. Perfect lifestyle.

Ivory Coast are closer than either of these two teams.

Lol. 1966 wasn't it?
