Which is the better stadium??? Optus or Skilled?

Optus, because is has a better surface, at least it has some form of electronic scoreboard, and you don't have to pay $35 to get a seat.

That would be the scoreboard that often doesn't work, wouldn't it ?

Saiak seems to show more interest in Geelong than Carlton.I wonder if its a relative of Karl.

Things Wrong with Optus:

1. It is Carlton's home ground.
2. The toilets are disgraceful. I was there for the VFL GF 2 weeks ago and walking in the breeze ways all you could smell was ****.
3. The Parking issues.
4. It is not aesthetically pleasing.
5. It is Carlton's home ground.
6. Seats are way too cramped at that new stand.. Legends stand? Right behind the goals, where I would have to sit, you can not move. That whole stand has been poorly designed. Made to look sophisicated, with no thought on logistic issues.
7. The screen is ****.
8. You can't move when you get into the corridors/breeze way things.
9. The stair cases are too slim.
10. It is Carlton's home ground.

But if we apply the same criteria to Skilled, you will come up with some crosses in some of the same areas.

I think movement around the ground is superior at Geelong, but Carlton (although ****) has a permanent screen.

The facilities for fans are nowhere near as good as the MCG or Docklands. But it takes over an hour of driving through permanent roadworks to get from Geelong to Melbourne, it's a lot to require their fans to do for every home game. They're a Geelong club, not a Melbourne suburban club.

Who really cares whether each ground is MCG standard. It's a pretty good thing that these are the only two suburban grounds left.

I also question what you have written here. ANyone see the contradictions?

Again, this is about my 5th post talking about Geelong, I am not exactly obsessed and not related to Karl...I posted this because I was talking to a mate and we were discussing what was the worst stadium and we realised that everyone bags Optus when Kardinia is worse!

It's better than not having one at all, and at least you can have a seat without having to pay for a reserved one. PP is a ****hole, but IMO KP is worse.

This coming from a club who doesn't have to worry about maintaining a ground. We are one of two clubs who have control of their own ground. No wonder both are struggling financially. If Melbourne were maintaining their own ground you would find their facilities would be pretty average too.

Anyway, since when has a Melbourne fan complained about prices?

We've been fortunate enough to draw Carlton at Optus Oval in Round 21 and Geelong at Skilled Stadium in Round 22.

It's hard to compare two grounds you hate intensely.

At least with Optus there are free seats available if you get to the ground early (bottom of the Legends Stand). With Geelong you have to pay over $30 for a reserved seat or stand behind the goals or in the forward/back pocket. Having said that I don't mind the train ride full of saints supporters to Geelong and it's good to experience a footy day more akin to the old days. Especially when every other week we're at Colonial Stadium under a closed roof.

Anyway if the saints play at the ground I'll be there. Perhaps my judgement is just a little clouded from some fearful thrashings over the years. Round 4 this year wasn't a highlight.

Maybe your eyesight ;)
No, I don't know why it appears grey. It isn't in person, very lush and green. Right now they are replanting the ground and this is why it is in good condition, but it wasn't quite as empty all season as you probably think. Optus hosted 47 games of football and 130 training sessions in 2002. It held up very well!

Optus oval is redundant given that the Telstra Dome is only a few kilometre's away. Skilled Stadium will always have its place in the AFL as long as Geelong remains in the competition.

Telstra Dome is perhaps the worst stadium if you take into account the way it sanitizes the game and removes the atmosphere. It is stale and boring. Great facilities, but they do not always make a great stadium!

Come on people, lets be honest here. Optus Oval is a much better ground than Kardinia Park.

10 year's ago, it wasn't.

Before they put the seats on the outer wing at Geelong, there was no better atmosphere than being part of a packed house at Geelong with Ablett flying and the side kicking record scores.

But since the seats have gone in, the atmosphere has disappeared which may have something to do with the reason why we haven't been as successful there in recent years. We used to always give a contest no matter who came down or how good they were, now we have a tendancy to lay down on occasions, and that is partly because of the lack of noise from the supporters.

Now the cheersquad are at the other end of the ground, now the brownlow stand is full of 90 year-olds and there is a new stand which is designed purely for the sponsors which has ruined the atmosphere at the ground, they've even taken down the two manuel scoreboards.

The other problem at Geelong is that the everyday supporter that came 10 years ago and stood on the wing with their family can't afford to do that anymore, which makes for a slighty different style, middle-upper class crowd, traditionally a lot quieter. The standing room that does exist is on the forward flanks behind the seats so you don't get that atmosphere down on the ground.

At least at Carlton, you can go undercover if it rains, you can't do that at Geelong.

The surface of both are on a par because neither now have a cricket pitch, so conditions are always as good as can be except for surface water which gathers on both grounds from time to time.

Geelong's facilities are better in terms of toilets, food and bar outlets. But in terms of an atmosphere it doesn't compare.

I think the VFL grand final showed the value of both grounds. There was just as much noise for Geelong in an 11,500 crowd at Carlton as there would be for 22,000 crowd at Geelong.

Saiak, you are proof that football supporters have changed a great deal over the past decade. They all want their creature comforts and if they have to stand in the outer then thats just not good enough! I was lucky enough to get a taste of suburban footy in the late 80s and early 90s and ive got to say it kicked *rse over the sterile version we have today. I suspect many folk on this board wouldnt have a clue about suburban footy.

Kardinia has got plenty going for it. Its a small ground that still has the feel of a suburban footy ground. The amenities are up to scratch so I dont know what your complaints are all about.
I loved the old suburban grounds. When I was down in Melbourne as a kid, I would go to Kardinia Park, Princes Park, Arden Street, love the atmosphere, the feel, the wooden bench seats, the flaking paint, epitomised what footy was all about. The raw sounds and smells of the battle. I haven't seen anything like it since the early days of Carrara but even then it was more a temporary stand arrangement with a hill.

Ah, fire up the delorean doc, once it hits 88mph, I'm off to the footy in Melbourne, circa 1979. Brilliant!!!!
