Hodge, got 17 votes last year and we barely won a game... includes 37 touches against Essendon and not a vote... Hodge will win a brownlow as soon as Hawthorn can win 10 games plus...

He actually polled 15 votes but yeah if hawks manage to win 10 games or more then he could very well win the brownlow!

possibly not as your style will change.

And dont crap on about his possy count as he gets a LOT of junk possessions.

For example if i picked up the ball in the back pocket, handballed it to a teammate, who handballed back, who then recieved another handball from me, which he dropped because he is tackled and i gathered and kicked to halfback where it it marked and I run past and recieve a handball which i kicked to the wing I would have managed to pick up 4 possies where i should have had 1.

However, when the Hawks are winning 10+ games - the likelihood of other players playing well is greater (Hodge is currently a gun in a poor/developing side) and the votes will be shared around more

Judd, Cousins, Black, Akermanis, Buckley, Goodes all played finals.

Its best to actually watch the player concerned more closely before making sweeping silly statements like this.

While your comment can be applicable to players in the Hawthorn backline it is scarcely applicable to Hodge who plays in the midfield more commonly and at times when he is down back will mainly endeavour to kick outside of defensive 50 at the first opportunity. He is a long kicking player and is thus commonly used as the go to man (when he isn't winning his own hardball clearances) by the side because his skills and smarts make him the ideal choice for the role.

Re: Which one of these players has the best chance of winning the 2006 Brownlow Medal

With the changes being made to the game, the influence of key forwards is being negated.

The Brownlow will favor midfielders even more than it already does.

that would be called second, third and fourth efforts mate. In that passage of play you just described the 4 possessions he gets have taken the ball from the back pocket to the wing which is halfway up the ground. Whats wrong with that? Wouldnt you rather be precise and work it up rather than just bombing it from the back pocket and hoping for a mark on the wing?

If Hawthorn can pull together a few more wins than Luke Hodge is a huge chance, major ball magnet just has to keep his monday nights free.

Love to see Brown play a full season though cause in my opinion he is the most influential player in the league and could be anything, don't think the umpires like him though.

Barry Hall could win it this year too, if anyone does from Sydney he will!

You guys will never win ten games while you're playing 'possession footy'. If you change your gameplan, Hodge won't rack up nearly as many soft possessions.

Low possession, direct football playing teams win games.

Re: Which one of these players has the best chance of winning the 2006 Brownlow Medal

Hodge and Dal Santo.

Brown will get votes, just depends on a) How many games he plays and b) Will he get suspended. I had him as the no.1 player in my pre-season top 50 however.

I reckon Ablett jnr is a big chance though.

Doubt it very much. The Brownlow medal is now restricted to two criteria for winning; you must be a midfielder, and you must play in a top 4 side (maybe top 6). Otherwise, do not apply. No forward or defender has a hope in hell of winning it anymore. It also helps if you're flashy and you don't get hurt in packs too often.

Paul Haselby will be the big chance for Freo this year now he is looking healthy.
