Which players will step it up for Mark Neeld?

New coach, new start. There have been countless examples over the years of players resurrecting their careers or taking it to a new level with a change of coach. Who will it be for us with Mark Neeld? And will anyone go backwards?

For me (start with the obvious choices);

- Cale Morton. Will hopefully get put in one position and finally find some mongrel. Was stagnating terribly under Bailey. Not expecting miracles but should improve a fair bit.

- Colin Sylvia. Have been waiting for that truly elite season and a new coach means he is out of his comfort zones and will have to work his arse off.

Any others? Anyone gonna go backward?

Addam Maric will stay on the list 100% and ill put him on the list as one of the players who will step up and get a spot as the crumber in our best 22, He has struggled with the defensive side of the game... Enter Mark Neeld.

Cale Morton, agree with above that a settle position and definite role will help.

Clint Bartram- Neeld will love his defensive work, needs to work on his kicking skills over summer

Watts, Gysberts, Garland, Cook- 3 very important players who need to put on 3-4 kilos

The sort of players that find second winds under new coaches are Warnock, Bate, Dunn, Wonna, of which one will be in our best 22 by the end of next year.

The players who NEED to step up

Aaron davey and Brad Green or they will quickly meet the end of their careers.

Jared Rivers, Joel Macdonald there is a couple of young talls coming through and they wil have to stay consistent to keep their spots

I'll throw another name into the mix with Jamie Bennell. When he's good, he's brilliant, but he's only good for half a quarter a game. Needs to find consistency. Hopefully Neeld can oblige. With Blease, Bennell and Nicholson all running off half-back....the opposition won't know what hit them.

Have a look at the change development of someone like Daisy Thomas since Neeld has been in charge of the Pies midfield and I think players like Morton, Bennell, Maric could all be big improvers.

Someone at Collingwood (probably Mick) turned Dale Thomas from a Nancy Boy into a genuinely tough player. Cale Morton obviously doesn't have Daisy's ability, but he's still pretty talented. My benchmark for Melbourne under Neeld is Morton's spine being stiffened to the extent he genuinely wants the footy.
If Cale Morton is reported under Mark Neeld we'll have a seriously good coach!

Jack Grimes was raved about on here not too long ago. He still plays for us, and that boy can seriously play. If his body holds up look out.

Just listening to Mark on Grandstand Abc radio, Mark's list analysis in the process highlighted roles that he needs players to play. Some roles had players listed below them who he thought were good enough to play them, other roles were left vacant because he felt no one on the list is currently good enough to fill them...and the recruiting dept needed to get those players.

No doubt there will be chances for fringe players to take an opportunity if they make the 2012 list.

I'm still torn as to who the third player we're going to move on is. We have to make 3 list changes. 2 are certainties - $cully and Warnock.

But who will be the third?

As for stepping up - Morton is the #1. I think a lot of players' defensive running will improve too - imagine Blease streaking back down the field to tackle!

I'd like to know more as well but I doubt Neeld would have given up that info on the radio. At least he is being honest about the roles he needs players to fill and that we are short of what he expects. No doubt he will draft/trade for what he needs over the next few years.

With Scully and Warnock going I'll go out on a limb and suggest someone like Bartram may be in some trouble IF he is out of contract, same goes for Bate and Dunn. One of those 3 would be on their way out you'd suspect. Yeah, Bartram has a crack but he can't kick and we can't afford to have players like him in the team.

Obviously he didn't name names..it was as general as I described. But It's good to know he is going to demand players play a certain way or they are out of the mix. Talk is cheap, and I got sucked in by Baileys media front early but I'm pretty impressed with Neeld's attitude.

It seems we are getting the qualities that most people thought would have to come from an experienced coach, from a new coach with a solid CV.

Top posts. I was just about to say. We need the spirit of "Checker" Hughes to tell them to start playing like Demons and not like fuchsias. EVERYONE NEEDS TO LIFT!

Yeah I assumed he didn't name names, but thought he may have named areas that we need new cattle in like power forward or fast mid for example.

I remember thinking he sounded impressive when talking on Friday night football a few times this year and that sure as hell hasn't changed. As you said tho, talk is cheap...

IMO we've been getting about 70% tops out of Dunn's game. I don't just mean effort but also versatility and untapped ability. Due to the mo it is hard to take him seriously at times but with 81 games under his belt and genuine room for improvement I'm glad he is still under contract and likely to get a chance to convince and learn from the new coach.
