Post 92 before the first mention of Josh Smith. Was the first one that leapt to mind. A little while after The Unpleasantness, there was this big lump of a lad clunking marks in #18 and I thought everything was going to be all right again.
Yeah I remember hearing a segment on Grandstand around that time on the ABC & they were saying this bloke might do allright.

As i recall, Stephen Easton looked the goods, and he has a very interesting story, his old man played for us, and by playing him illegally (because he was residentially tied to Geelong) in the U19's, after finishing 2nd on the ladder, we were stripped of 58 premiership points and demoted to 11th, he played about 30 odd games in 4 years, then went to Carlton, played 1 game and was delisted.

Stephen Easton (born 12 August 1959) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with North Melbourne and Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL).[1] He later played for Port Melbourne in the Victorian Football Association.

Stephen's father Kevin Easton was a former North Melbourne player and a Club Secretary for Geelong Football Club.

In 1975 the North Melbourne Under 19's side were stripped of 58 points on the eve of the finals by the league for illegally fielding Easton in 17 matches during the Home & Away season. It was found he was residentially tied to Geelong. This meant the North side who had finished second on the ladder were relegated to eleventh when the penalty was handed out and missed the finals.[2]

North Melbourne paid Geelong $10,000 to obtain his clearance in 1976.[3]

So my old mate The Zebmeister hasn't mentioned Daniel McConnell yet. Interesting. :stern look
Daniel couldn't get into a WC midfield containing Judd, Cousins and Kerr....... (and the fact he just wasn't much chop). He had one decent game if I recall, a practice match against us. 1st round draft pick no.13 = S.Hurn. The horror

Yeah thought he might be something special too. Kicked some important goals in a comeback win against Carlton in '79 as I recall. Was very disappointed for the U19 kids when those points were stripped as they were the best team for the year. Pleased that John Frazer was nonetheless allowed to keep his goal kicking award for bagging 100.

He came over (with a Sandover medal i think), about the same time as Phil Kelly, and Kim Hodgeman, just handy, but Peter Spencer never really set the world on fire.

Bit like Jonas, but injury destroyed him.

'Spanner' was a star in the WAFL before and after North, dual Sandover medallist, but gradually worn down by injuries. When he came to Subi in 1985 he nearly bankrupted the club with the amount of elastoplast he went through, then he staggered off to the Skivvy Wearers where he ended his career crawling about wearing a bike helmet. Might have gone on a bit long, I reckon......

Ran into Steve at an MCG game v Dawks ( we won ) and had a chat. Admitted he was lazy and never got the best out of himself. Was a Trinity product and literally beat Assumption by himself one day.

He had a pretty distinguished coaching career in the DVFL.
