Who are the only music legends still around today?

!

Hello, Hooray!! Post 86! Thanx for turning up TheStinger.

Alice Cooper has been quoted by 'Micheal Jackson' as a INFLUENCE!! anyone care to know why Thriller was Horror Genre motivated? EXACTLY!! And Vincent Price also gave his services to MJ... that's 7 years after Welcome To Your Nightmare's Black Widow intro which funnily enough got MJ thinking about hiring Vincent Price for his Thriller album.

Alice Cooper also influenced a wider genre of music than ANY OTHER... something MJ did not accomplish. :p

I'd like to add EDDIE VAN HALEN to the Legends list! :thumbsu: Who do you think played the SOLO for no payment!! on MJ's earliest signature tune, Beat it. Exactly!
If I may put forth a slice of my own personal philosophy. I feel that man has ruled this world as a stumbling demented child king LONG ENOUGH! And as his empire crumbles my precious black widow shall rise as his most fitting successor!

...thats just from memory...it might be a little wrong. Welcome to my nightmare....one of the greatest albums ever!

Madonna as a solo artist has been making chart topping music from 1983 to today while Michael Jackson has only been big as chart topping music as a solo artist from 1979 to 1995 but after 1995 Michael has had hardly any chart success!

While Madonna was not has talented as Michael in dancing ability and singing She is by far the Biggest Female Music Icon (Legend) the world has ever witnessed!

And I would not even Compare Janet Jackson to Madonna! Janet has only sold 70 million Albums worldwide and does'nt even come close to Madonna who has sold 200 Million Albums worldwide.

Remember in the 80's and 90's Madonna and Michael Jackson ruled the Air waves and MTV! They have both changed popular culture like no other artist before them and have both created classic pop music for over 25 years. Both are icon's and legends and both deserve the title of the King and Queen of Pop!

MJ as a solo artist has 4x the amount of sales that Madonna has in her history.

The Jackson 5 has 3/4 of her sales.

The Jackson 5 had their first number one in the 60's with MJ leading.

I really disagree with your comment on MJ post-1995.

2001's Invincible is a diamond album worldwide (that's 10x platinum).

The 25th anniversary edition of Thriller went multi-platinum worldwide when released last year (3x platinum).

Ditto his remix album in 1997 (6x platinum).

King of Pop went 5x platinum last year.

Number Ones went 6x platinum in 2003.

That is the definition of relevance in this decade.

Now it's true that his last tour concert was in 1997 if I remember correctly, and his last full concert in 2001.

Having said that, he just sold out 50 concerts for next month with a million tickets selling out in an instant - something we will never see again as long as this earth rotates the sun.

And yes, if you're talking about Sales, Madonna is significantly ahead of Janet, but I was just saying that those two were being compared from say the mid80's to mid-late 90's when Janet was on top of her game. If you look at the sales in that point in time, they were very much comparable, but if you look at their career sales then yes madonna is a long way ahead (Janet was massive though).

Of course sales aren't everything when it comes to comparing who is 'bigger'. Another aspect would be influence.

I would argue that MJ's influence is bigger than Madonna's, and just about every other artist from MJ's time.

I don't wanna take anything away from Madonna as she has been a monolith herself, but I don't think she is on MJ's level when it comes to how big an artist they are/were, and so this post is just me bigging up MJ as opposed to attacking Madonna as I reckon it would be stupid of me to attack her.

Nick Cave

I don't get Nick Cave.
Is it a case of being good just because he is different?

I know he is talented and I don't doubt that, it's just that I really don't like or understand how anyone could like the stuff he produces.

Whenever I hear a Cave song I find myself changing it or leaving the room.

Same can be said about any music artist. (ie not understanding why someone likes something)

Its a simplistic view to think that something is only enjoyed ebcause it isn't mainstream (even though IMO he is fairly popular for his alternative music stylings)

I know that and I agree he is talented.
I just don't enjoy his music. I never said that he was enjoyed by people because he wasn't mainstream, I simply raised that as a possible reason (There are many people out there like that).

There is just something about him that I don't get and I can't quite understand why everyone raves about him.

Agree with you PK. Madonna, while in a world of her own in terms of female artists, she isn't in the same stratosphere as MJ. That's not a critisism, because you wont see an artist come close for as long as you live.

If Madonna is the Queen of Pop, then Michael Jackson is in another universe as King of Pop.

^I don't know about Madonna, but that list is filled with errors regarding MJ's discography.

Thriller with 61 million is laughable.

It doesn't even list all of his work there, and so I'm guessing all of Madonna's work isn't listed there either.

But yeah, both legends.

What would you say about Britney.

Personally I think her music is trash, however she is a massive artist worldwide.

Having said that, how influential is she? How many female artists are influenced by Britney? I can't think of any, but then again I don't really listen to many female artists.

She would be a loss to the trash mags. Not to the music industry.

that's an insult to all musicians and artists in the world

no love for Celine Dion or Mariah Carey (completely understandable). But they have both sold similar numbers of records to Madonna, Mariah doing so in a considerably shorter period of time

bryan adams

he was more music of MY childhood

i mean, his classic hit from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves was on Family guy the other week

he was in a rich vein of form when he had hits from other movie soundtracks such as don juan de marco and the three musketeers.

Can you please come and clean up the vomit from my carpet?

From a Ska perspective which in turn influended bluebeat, dancehall, reggae etc

Prince Buster
Lee "Scratch" Perry
Toots Hibbert
Alton Ellis

All are massive legends of their cross genre works.

And as far as a I know all are still performing despite their ages.

Maybe not to that extent, but he has nevertheless reinvented himself quite remarkably in recent years with Rick Rubin producing.

His 2005 album 12 Songs was critically acclaimed and in 2008 Home Before Dark was his first ever US number 1 album (achieved at the age of 67 no less).

Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan. His is still the only concert I have been to where I had this overwhelming sense of history, that I was watching a living legend. I spent half the night rubbing my eyes in disbelief that I was watching him.

However, his fans are loyal. He changes style but doesn't really change fanbase.

People talk about media coverage not being the be all and end all but that depends on what the question is. If we are looking for the entertainment world to a person coming to a stop and paying tribute or countries all over the world gathering together to mourn, then the field is limited by that criteria.

The passing of Neil will gain all day mentions, a dedicated tribute show but nothing to the extend that MJ has just achieved. I'm saying that as a fan of Neil but not MJ.

Of course a huge part of all this is when it happens. At 50 with a comeback weeks away, the shock value and thus inclination to talk about it is greater.

Mariah Carey is an interesting example.

Her influence is paramount and her status in pop culture is reflected by her world records, but then people could then use the 'her music is commercial' line against her. In rebuttal to that, you can say she has one of the greatest voices to have ever existed in music.

Can you please come and clean up the vomit from my carpet?

^His post was taking the piss - sarcasm not noted...

He was basically saying that a shitload of people in this thread are claiming their own favourite artists as legends, when in reality they are probably good/talented/big/influential artists, but short of 'legend' status.
