Most of us being in Oz would probs follow one of the 'bigger' hockey nations at the International tournaments, so who do you back.

personally I'm always behind the Swedes, even have a Sweden Jersey from the 2006 olympics

Re: Who do follow internationally?

I started off as a Red Wings fan when I started to follow the game as a kid, and Sergei Fedorov was my favourite player, so I have always had a soft spot for Russia. However, I have been a Blackhawks fan for the last 5 or 6 years, and my current favourite player is Jonathan Toews, so I support Canada mainly to support him.

Re: Who do follow internationally?

Went to the Div II champs in Melbourne earlier in the year and supported Australia vocally (Matt Ezzy you star!), but in the top division, probably Germany, seeing as that's where I got into hockey. Always a soft spot for Canada though, and hate to see the US win.

Re: Who do follow internationally?

It's kinda cool being able to choose teams at international tournaments. Usually I will follow Canada, but it can depend on a whole range of things, like which Penguins are competing/who's never won gold/who's been in a long drought etc etc.

Re: Who do follow internationally?

I am newcomer to hockey, with a daughter in Vancouver, the playoffs last year, and seeing a game live at Rogers 4 weeks ago I am totally hooked. I have even signed up to Gamecentre live just so i can watch it

Re: Who do follow internationally?

Hahah neat thread.

Kind of works both ways though, since I visited Australia I cheer for them in international competition like Rugby/Olympics/Cricket etc. But being from Canada I'm going to say I back Canada in hockey. :)

I usually root for Canada, but as someone else said, I mostly want my favourite players from the NHL (and all Penguins) to do well.

So, Sid scoring the Olympic Gold winning goal was p-r-e-t-t-y awesome.

Only problem with being a Pens fan is one is usually assumed to be a Crosby-era fanboy; my signed Lemieux jersey says different though. I was already a fan when I happened to be in the States in '96 (or about then) when the Pens went on like an 18-0 tear with the super-ultra-mega top line of Super Mario, "Dying Alive" JJ and Ronnie Franchise. Was a fan forever more.

International hockey is cool, because the best teams are seriously stacked. Often produces strange results, too.

Got to go and see the Canadians start off getting killed 6-1 tonight at the Saddledome, before making it 6-5 and hitting the post with a minute left to lose to Russia in the Semis in World Juniors. Sweden vs Russia for Gold. Man the place was dead till the second goal went in and things started getting up then the 5th goal I haven't experienced anything like it since the Flames cup run in 04'. Was probably the most depressing thing I've witnessed in person to fall short of a ridiculous comeback. Sell out game, people were scalping tickets for $4,000+ before the game.

Heres the highlights.

Canada. Coz they are nuts about hockey. Its like if you lived in canada and watched aussie rules and we competed in our game at international level and knowing how fanatical we are about footy then it would be logical to follow the country who owns the game.

A big difference is that there isn't a big section of Canada which religiously follows a sub-standard sport instead and is baffled by hockey. :thumbsu: ;)

so i'm guessing you'd be the kind of person to vote 'yes' on the 1999 referendum?

it would be interesting to see how a quebec national team would fare in international competition, probs would be on par with the likes of Slovakia and Finland(just behind the top guns Canada, Russia, Sweden, Czech Rep)
