Depends how high we rate Caldwell if he is still available at that point.

I don’t think it’s worth giving our first next year and downgrading to a second rounder, but boy does the quality fall off a cliff this year from pick 8/9 to our pick.

I have a strong feeling Adelaide will try and swoop if available and so will GWS.

I think we have a chance with GWS but I don’t see either how we can reasonably get it done with Adelaide.

Is there something of value for them at pick 12 those couple of spots later??

19's technically a R1 which meets the 2 in 4 rules but unless we finish top 6 next year its super risky. I agree GWS might do some trade because of Briggs Adel I think will either try and trade up to 4 to try and get Rozee or Rankine off Port or take whichevet of Caldwell/Smith/Hately/Jones is there at 8.

Will Adelaide take Caldwell over the local boy Hately??

Will say a lot about the opinion of Hately if they pass on him for a Victorian country boy.

You would assume if there is a remotely close opinion of Hatley vs Caldwell that the crows will take Hatley for the no risk factor.

Very different players, they'd choose Caldwell as a point of difference in their midfield. Sloane, M.Crouch, Gibbs, Douglas, Ellis-Yolmen all sluggish off the start. Caldwell is a bit more explosive out of the blocks.

Edit - also, the experts rate Caldwell as clearly the better player, and the Crows have been known to ignore where the player comes from (to their detriment).

I don't think its so much one or the other as trying to get both..Hately could get to 13 particularly given how rarely GWS take SA players whereas Caldwell won't get to 13 IMO so by taking Caldwell first they can try to get both.

How does the new rookie list rule for previously listed players work? For instance if Geelong are interested in Jye Bolton who was previously on magpies rookie list can geelong list him without having to go in the draft?

If we can't trade up and none of the top 8 or so picks slide down to our first then I'd be keen to trade back and look to pick up an extra player - I'm not sure there's a huge difference in quality between 12 - 25.

If we could swap our first with say WCE for example and get 20 and 22, I'd look at picking up Curtis Taylor (who I think is really underrated) and someone like Ely Smith. Even then you'd probably have a choice of other players like Duursma, Valente, McHenry or Stocker and maybe even Hill or Sturt falls.

Joel Corey, Corey Enright, Jimmy Bartel, Max Rooke, Paul Chapman, Cameron Ling, Cam Mooney for a start then Ablett and Joel Selwood- no wait we have them.

With pick 12 I want Clark, but I think he will be gone, if so I want Hately, but unfortunately I also think he will be gone. I really like the look of Taylor, great kick for goal and can also set others up, he is smooth and a great user of the ball, something we need in our forward half.

Curtis Taylor??

For me we should be going for midfield ball winners to replace the Ablett's, Selwoods & Dangerfields over the next few years. Plus if we can snag a high upside big or two down back and forward that would be great.

12 :
  • Dream Pick - Jye Caldwell - Tough, explosive, ball winner. Just what we need. / Bailey Smith - Sneaky chance to get to us and would have to jump if he was there. Won't happen, but you can dream.
  • My Pick - Riley Collier-Dawkins - Biggest upside. Only just learning to use his side and showed his worth in the finals.
  • Wells Pick - Jackson Hately - Good size and mix of ball winning and run.

50 :
  • Dream Pick - James Rowbottom - Strong, explosive player, lot to like how he takes the game on.
  • My Pick - Jack Bytel - Could be a steal, good ball winner and has some spunk.
  • Wells Pick - Tom Joyce - Got good attack on the ball and run.

51 :
  • Dream Pick - Fraser Turner - Impressive ball winner, good size and run.
  • My Pick - Kyle Reid - Nice tall that moves well, marks strongly and rebounds nicely.
  • Wells Pick - William Kennedy - Good movement and kicking for tall forward / ruck

70 :
  • Dream Pick (if no bids beforehand) Oscar Brownless - Good runner and goal sense. Hopefully start forward and move into the midfield.

Rookie :
  • Dream Pick (if no bids beforehand) Blake Schlensog - Nice future option forward / ruck. Worth a shot.

Some smokies I like left:

Noah Gown, player comparison Chris Darling or Jonathan Brown. He has extremely sticky hands, kicks goals, is regularly in the best at TAC level. l just don't think you can teach Forward craft, and this guy has it in spades. His contested marking is excellent. He would make an excellent third foil to Ratugolea and Kreuger. He also tackles and has a good work-rate it seems, and his production is very good. Having not gone Sam Sturt early, then I think Gown would be an excellent pick-up, especially with a late pick.

Another player that has a low profile this draft but excelled for the Allies is Fraser Turner, he is also quite young, so has more development upside, he has elite endurance, strong running patterns, high production, can mark over head and kicks goals. Probably more an outside midfielder, and I think he could compliment the list very nicely with our other young midfielders. Player comparison, Mitch Duncan.
