This is an outstanding post, thanks.Novak consistently hits the ball deep and on the angles better than any other player. He doesn't smack forehand winners like Federer. He just strangles his opponent out of the point by keeping them planted behind the baseline and making them move. That accumulates fatigue, particularly over a best of 5. And if an opponent does appear to get on top with a series of attacking shots, Novak's ability to defend and make them play an extra shot is beyond compare. Only Nadal gets close. Novak's flexibility, movement, slides, resulting in the ability to make himself longer than he is, is absolutely freakish. It's a surprise his body has held up so long. He also makes few unforced errors in matches.
And as we all know, he's also the greatest return of serve the game has ever seen.
This is the thing. I don't get caught up in hate for him. But it does annoy me how fans don't respect what he brings to the game of tennis from a physical and playing perspective, particularly part-time fans. We have witnessed three great players with different styles, each having success against each other to some degree.
Federer was an attacking player in the classic style, like Sampras before him. Nadal is more like Agassi, with the addition of being an absolute masochist and delivering the heaviest top spin the game has seen. We haven't seen the likes of Djokovic before. He is a fort. His game isn't easily replicated. I truly appreciate how he physically and mentally breaks down his opponent. It's not pretty, but it's still unbelievable to watch time and time again.
