Novak consistently hits the ball deep and on the angles better than any other player. He doesn't smack forehand winners like Federer. He just strangles his opponent out of the point by keeping them planted behind the baseline and making them move. That accumulates fatigue, particularly over a best of 5. And if an opponent does appear to get on top with a series of attacking shots, Novak's ability to defend and make them play an extra shot is beyond compare. Only Nadal gets close. Novak's flexibility, movement, slides, resulting in the ability to make himself longer than he is, is absolutely freakish. It's a surprise his body has held up so long. He also makes few unforced errors in matches.

And as we all know, he's also the greatest return of serve the game has ever seen.

This is the thing. I don't get caught up in hate for him. But it does annoy me how fans don't respect what he brings to the game of tennis from a physical and playing perspective, particularly part-time fans. We have witnessed three great players with different styles, each having success against each other to some degree.

Federer was an attacking player in the classic style, like Sampras before him. Nadal is more like Agassi, with the addition of being an absolute masochist and delivering the heaviest top spin the game has seen. We haven't seen the likes of Djokovic before. He is a fort. His game isn't easily replicated. I truly appreciate how he physically and mentally breaks down his opponent. It's not pretty, but it's still unbelievable to watch time and time again.
This is an outstanding post, thanks.

Novax may be the GOAT but he is ratings poison. Some great media training can't hide the fact he is a douche.

Opinions...
Heaps of support for Novak there on the night and worldwide.
I for one much prefer to watch Novak play than Rafa- totally over Rafa's OCD antics and time-wasting.
And I think the domination by Novak is a huge factor. Almost everyone knew he would win AO when he was allowed in.

Yep, thanks.

Federer's backhand, no matter 'graceful and 'eloquent' it looks, isn't anywhere as good or effective then the top 5 majors winners. Have at it. Nadal exploited it numerous times, changed his game and defeated him at Wimbledon. Novak punished Federer and mentally dominated him that way. Novak has the better backhand, just efficient and effective.

Federer isn't mentally nor physically close to the level of Djokovic or Nadal. People just don't and never will accept that. Who you backing in a 5 setter? Federer's game was never about grind or chasing down balls.
Novak came from 40-15 championship point down to Federer and still matched him in 2019 Wimbledon (his best ever win at Wimbledon IMO). Say what you want, but his game isn't suitable for today's. But that's unacceptable for many people.

Djokovic has won each of the 4 majors twice, in 2021. Nadal did it in 2022 at the Aus Open. Federer never did that. Never could beat Nadal at Roland Garros.

You know Nadal has loss only to two players in the France- Soderling but Djokovic is the only man to have beaten him twice at the French. Just mentally and physically elite in every major.

Federer probably gets away as being marketable, likeable.

Fed was way off the mark, won most of his slams against players that weren’t anywhere close to the level. Fed had the most aesthetically pleasing game, and was the first complete player that I can recall. It’s been about Rafa and Novak for me and well before they both moved beyond his record.

I feel like it’s bit like Melbournians going for Melbourne city when they started supporting Victory. It’s tough to change who you support.Fed came on first.

Australian opinions don't really register on a worldwide scale.

This thread is a joke. Anyone who has been saying anyone but Djokovic for the last 3 years is in severe denial.

There is a clear gap between Djokovic and Federer/Nadal.

It’s really not close with Nadal the closeish so to speak, and let’s not forget Novak missed 2 slams over the last few years

He would have won another US Open as well if it wasnt for the freak disqualification in 2020.

What he has achieved in the Covid years in general is remarkable.

Yep would be close to 30 already he probably gets close to 30 anyway doubt it’s beaten in my lifetime

There is no argument from me, even though Fed is probably my favourite when on song. The argument that he won against players that weren't close to level could probably apply to Djokovic, except he's doing at the end of his career instead of the start.

I'm surprised to see Djoker didn't become great until 2011.

I knew he won his break through Grand Slam in 2008, but I am staggered to see he played in 11 Grand Slams before winning his next one. He then won five of the next nine.

I'm even more staggered to see he experienced another lul between 2016 and 2018 where he played in eight Grand Slams without winning one.

FWIW, Nadal went 11 Grand Slams between 2014 and 2017 without winning one. Yes, injury had a bit to do with that.

Federer went nine Grand Slams without winning one between 2010 and 2012 where he won at Wimbledon, and then he didn't win another one until the 2017 Aus Open. Fair to say between 2012 and 2016, Djoker and Nadal were a fair bit better than Federer.

He’s comfortably the best and has been for awhile now. He’s a good sport on the court and well mannered as he goes about his game. Always seems like a nice person too, but also clearly a bit of a goose off the court.
His extraordinary record won’t be beaten but I’d expect roger and Rafa to be talked about just as much by most people in 20 years. Lucky era to have witnessed. Good on the three of them. And to the players who had to consistently lose to them for so many years!

After finally breaking through at Roland Garros in 2016, he went through some turmoil. Maybe some lost motivation after finally capturing the career slam, the elbow injury issues, the rumoured personal relationship problems, he lost weight and was too thin and the strange relationship with that Pepe Imaz (the spiritual guru). It was during this drop off that allowed Federer to claim three more GS titles.
