Campbell Brown has indicated he wants to be considered. Ablett is almost certain to get the gig (its probably a done deal). But would that be the right decision?

As a player, Ablett stands out like a beacon. But he was no leader at Geelong. Some would say he too much into himself, and when you compare him with accomplished captains such as Harley, and Jonathan Brown, Ablett simply doesn't compare. He is more articulate than his father, but he is a man of cliches. He was never seriously in contention as captain at Geelong, IMO.

I'd be interested in Hawks supporters' views on Campbell Brown. He comes across as a natural spokesman.

Poll?

Nathan Bock has always stood out as an onfield leader too, so he'd have to be considered. Riska could make a case too.

Was Mark Lock their captain this year? At any rate, the 2010 skipper probably doesn't stand a chance, considering they'd have to deal with the best player in the competition and a few other very good and far more experienced players. Probably wouldn't go down too well, and dent Lock's confidence. No way an 18 year old could manage it.

In the end Ablett is probably the best choice. As the best player in the competition all the youngsters at the GC will probably already look up to him, and he'd command their respect. Similar to Shane Warne captaining the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, despite Graeme Smith being around. And that went quite well.

Campbell Brown with his tough man talk and actions, no thanks. He's a leader in giving away free kicks, and unless he grows a leg up there he isn't much of a player anymore.

You won't get a much better on field leader than Gaz, and off field he is a settled guy who whilst not much of a media performer is steady.

Rischitelli, Bock and Brown will most likely be up there but I don't exactly consider them great leaders. Harbrow might be underrated leadership wise, especially with their indigenous guys. I don't expect much leadership from Brennan, Fraser or Krakouer.

Besides that I'd be looking at guys like Daniel Harris, Sam Iles and Michael Coad. They've been with the group of young guys and should be around the mark at AFL level.

probably ablett but I can see the case for Brown. Puts his body on the line and leads by example. Performs best in big close games. But surely it will be Ablett:)

It's gotta be Ablett for the marketing if nothing else.

The AFL aren't going to want their new lovechild to have a comparative no name as the face of the club when they've got one of the most famous footballers in the country there as an option.

Well Harris was considered last year I believe, so it certainly is a possibility. But it'll be Ablett.

Browny's probably not polished enough behind a microphone, but when it comes to team standards and setting the bar for the intensity required, the young guys at GC could probably have no one better to follow.

Ablett will get it and he is probably their best bet, as in terms of an actual leader, there isn't a lot to choose from.

He obviously will set a great example in the way he plays and his work ethic, projecting something the kids can aspire to and becoming the face of GC, as the AFL wants. However, there really is no denying that he sooks when he doesn't get what he wants on the field, I've never heard of him being the one giving the rousing or motivational speeches to the rest of the group and his media persona consists of him saying "mate, look" before trotting out some cliches, mostly about how he's just focusing on his footy.

Lets face it anyone who leaves their club and goes up North for the $$ is probably not the best captain material anyway. But unless they pick an 18 year old or a player they plcuked form VFL/SANFL they really dont have any other choice

Yeah they do, Captain K Hunt, or does going slightly east for the $$ rule him out on that grounds?

Ablett: Look, mate. I know you want to go back home and I know they're offering you a lot more money than us but you should remember the club that made you what you are, the fans who supported you and your team mates.

Player: But isn't that what you did?

Ablett: Well....ah...well...

Geez. It will be fun watching them try to instill a sense of loyalty up there.

Why? CEO's are often poached from other corporates for bigger dollars. I think this whole chasing money argument is getting old. He did what most people would do in his situation.
