Why Aren't St Kilda Trading for Pick 1?

I am absolutely baffled as to why St Kilda do not go and get pick one, and use it to select Tom Boyd. GWS are clearly interested in Sam Fisher, why not package him and pick 3 and try to move up for pick 1? Get Boyd in now, start his development, and then use next year's draft to pick up some midfielders, and ideally get everyone peaking around the same time frame.

The whole situation reeks of awful list management. As it stands, outside of Jack Steven and their older-soon-to-be-retired brigade, St Kilda's list is extremely vanilla, and lacks any star power at all. Pairing Boyd with Spencer White could give them a Roughead/Franklin type set up in a couple of years, with Tom Lee as a third tall.

Thoughts, St Kilda fans?

I guess it is all about list management coming from a carlton supporter and i'm sure many Melbourne supporters can agree with me, if you cull too many "old heads" in each line you would actually put yourself further back on the development scale. If fisher can help the development of young KPD then he is worth more than pick 1.

Nothing short of Steven plus pick 3 would be enough for pick 1, Boyd is that good. Obviously St Kilda wouldn't want that outcome, so no trade. Parcelling 'sweetners' like Fisher, second/third round picks etc is not going to cut it, would need to offer 'overs' for GWS to even consider missing out on Boyd.

Fisher was removed from their leadership group, wasn't he? Besides, they still have a few of old defensive heads at the club in Dempster, Gilbert, Gwilt etc...

Montagna.

Saints could just go for Patton instead. GWS won't be able to fit all of Patton, Cameron and Boyd into their lineup in future...and Patton maybe has lost a little currency due to injury similar to Dom Tyson.

I just think that if there is a key forward available, and you have a bit of currency (ie pick 3 + aging stars), you go and get him, much as an NFL team would trade up to get a franchise QB.

Instead of paying a shitload of overs for Boyd this year we can just wait till next year and get the best KPP with our number 1 pick then. They might not be as amazing as Boyd but they will be a hell of a lot cheaper.

We will load up on mids this year and worry about the KPP next year. It also gives us more time to see how Stanley, White and Lee develop.

Still wouldn't do it if I was GWS, montagna is too old to be part of their next premiership. He would have much more value to hawthorn, essendon etc than a team on the bottom

Armitage is the other one, I suppose. St Kilda need to make this happen. Watters needs to assert himself on this group.

Isn't a Goddard rumoured to be going number one next year? Worked out well previously...

They need KPD's not KPF's. Lee is already very good, and all reports suggest Spencer White is going to be a very good player too, then Longer and Hickey could be a strong ruck/forward combo of the future.

Lee is very good? Since when? He is undersized, and will get monstered most weeks playing on either of the oppositions best KPDs...

They are bringing in Delaney and Bruce as KPDs, to go along with Stanley. As for their rucks, I think St Kilda tends to push them behind the ball, rather than forward. See McEvoy, Ben.

Precisely. Everyone but Jack Steven should really be made available in an attempt to get this deal done. Boyd look a "once in a generation type" and a guy you can build your side around. There are quality midfielders available every year and it looks like the Saints will have top 5 picks in probably 2014 and 2015 as well so pick up a cpl gun mids there.

I'll give Chris Pelchen some credit with the trades he has made so far he seems to know that a complete rebuild is in order. It's just a shame he had to write an open letter to shortsighted St. Kilda fans to justify his actions.

He may be undersized, but that's why he gets on his bike and beats players on the lead rather than trying to compete one-out. Smart forwards, like Lee, do that.

Stanley is shit as a KPD, that's why they're bringing in Bruce and Delaney. The reason McEvoy was pushed into defence is because of their lack of KPD's and needing tall support back there

Roo isn't going to be part of the next premiership team, so why not package him with 3? Am serious, I know it means losing your marquee player, goalkicker, experienced head, and leader, but Saints have already lost BJ, Dal, McEvoy and Joey wont be there much longer, shouldn't they try get something for Roo while he still has currency? Tough decision but these are tough times for the Saints. Total rebuild.
