we have a coach who as a player I remember as a fierce tackler- so why mr coach is it that we are ranked last in tackling counts all season?
what really irks us supporters probably more than anything else is that we did not provide a contest on sat night- we actually pretty ,much zoned of our players to play a chip chip game.
I remember Hardwick saying no longer will the jumper hit the floor. Damien you make all the right noises but it is full of irony. YOu have not provided the action we need.
we need strong defensive teams that ge near contests. that force turnovers not teams that react, that try and execute cute passess. to think that our players are running away from contests is soul destroying. so if you cant get the game plan right, which you seem to be struggling with, lets at least teach players how to tackle each other. surely you can do that?

I hate how we are so fragile in the tough stuff.

Tackling, shepherding (when did we lay one?) smothers (other than Morris) and just being hard at it. That's not how I want my team to play. Disgusting to be LAST in tackles and embarrassing how many missed tackles we have.

It's mental, which is a coach issue.

I thought we tackled well in the first quarter against Essendon. There was good pressure on the ball carrier, but the more the game went on, the less intense the attack on the ball carrier. There's not much going on when we have not got the ball, and a worrying trend is that once our confidence is shot, we are an easy team for the opposition to spread and score quickly in a short time. it looks to be a concentration issue.

Tackling is only one problem. Lack of sheparding, inaccuracy in front of goals, poor defensive efforts from some players and ignoring the corridor for most of the game are also issues.

Tackling should be second nature but it is not.
The players should be ruthless and play with intensity but they do not.
The coach talks a lot, makes a lot of excuses but is unable to convert it into action.

The one thing lost in all this about the coach is that I can handle a defeat if we play with intensity, harrass, tackle and go into every contest 100%.
If we did that then we would not even be talking about our Coach.
He is clearly not doing his job.

Yeah Damien!! It's all your fault that not enough players in the team to go harder at the ball and stick tackles. Stop hiding behind that glass window, put the kit back on and show them how it's done...... [ to be read with extremely sarcastic voice.... Happy "no shit" day]

cant tackle when you play keepings off with the football which is a even bigger problem becouse we have way to many player with below standard foot skills

exactly. he has thrown out tackling for garbage football. he cannot clone the hawthorn program. fair dinkhum it aint rocket science. we need to get the opposition to hurt, get the footy and do something with it. this zoning away from the ball carrier crap is giving it to the opposition.

On saturday night, we played ultra conservative possession football. Hard to tackle when you hold possession of the ball for almost half a quarter.

I will say it again. Our gameplan is not conducive to a high tackle count.

In saying that, we aren't defensively minded enough when we don't have the ball, and get scored against heavily.

Is a bug bear of mine from the TW days in that he stated if you dont tackle then you better be a good player. That to me gives an out to players without making it an absolute priority. Imo you need to make it clear, even have tackle comps ie 1 per player per quarter and the winner gets a prize etc. I do agree our game plane is not condusive to high tackles numbers but what it also does is lower the intent and the players are feeding on this.

I also have another hate and that is when a opp player is just about to kick we try to tackle that player instead of smother the ball. tackles around the hips in this scenario doesnt stop the kick so why dont you try to smother the ball?

Huge issue. I hate the way we play.

Roos said last night on the couch that we have definitely improved, have some good talent but won't compete with the top sides until we become a high tackling, high contested ball team. I was watching the Swans leave the field Friday night. That is one hard team. That's what we should be aiming for. But they don't carry too many poor disposers either.

atm the we're flat track bullies and down hill skiers.

soft as butter, they don't want to do any of the hard physical stuff.

Maclure was right - a bunch of prima donna's.

Whoever doesn't lay a tackle is out. Even if it means playing undermanned. It's no use playing someone who's scared of a little physicality.

Just to clarify he didnt say a high CP side just the tackling. Our cp's arent that bad about 6th on difference. Can we get better yes but his point was tackling only.

This. So many times I've seen one of our blokes handball to another at close range and put him under pressure by not helping out by sheparding his own direct opponent. Frustrates me so much, such a simple and effective fundamental football tactic yet our blokes rarely ever do it. They need a more team orientated mindset

Right now, we don't have the big bodied personnel to lay the bone crunching tackles required to be competititve!
Perhaps we should also revisit this glaring deficiency during trade or free agent period?
