Why did the Eagles sack Ron Alexander in 1987?

Surely the marketing and promotion that truly mattered was in WA, convincing WAFL fans to back the Eagles, and for that Todd was the bigger name.

John Todd was a very polarising figure - was a bigger name in WA football than Alexander for sure but Swan Districts were the Collingwood of the WAFL back then (everyone else hated them) so he was never going to be accepted by the wider WA football public at a time when the club needed the state to get behind them

Alexander played for east perth, had a stint with Fitzroy and was the incumbent coach at East Freo who, along with Subiaco, dominated the WAFL at the time so he had a broader support base

Todd was a good coach but a poor people person which was his core problem and the players never took to him as he was a very abrasive personality so wasn't accepted by the non-swans players especially those from east freo who were more used to the less disciplinarian style of big Ron and to a lesser extent the Subi players. (Young ones need to understand that the early eagles were a WAFL conglomeration where supporters views on the value of players was coloured by which WAFL club they came from)

The two men were the necessary stepping stones to getting the proper fit with Malthouse - Todd inherited the good work done by Alexander before ****ing it up but the big red one, had he stayed on, was never going to surpass what Todd achieved

We needed a Victorian coach that understood how to win on the smaller and heavier Victorian suburban grounds - if you can find replays you won't find a side playing more clinical football than the eagles in the first half of 1991. seriously scary stuff

Yep.....he is certainly a bitter and twisted man who continues to hold a grudge. Didn't like him at East Freo, Hawthorn or the Bears and didn't like him at West Coast.

To be fair we didn't see the degree of professionalism required till Malthouse's appointment.

I don't think the league had, Malthouse was cutting edge in that regard. Most vic clubs weren't that keen
