Not sure if this has been discussed before (couldn't find it in the search) but why on earth has a team never used the rugby line-out in order to touch or mark a ball on the goal line. How many times do we see a ball almost nearly touched on the line.

Here is a picture if you don't know what i'm on about

Off the top of my head, it wouldn't work due to the amount of players required to lift up a player to mark the ball. That means there's a lot of loose men running around in the forward 50.

A Free Kick shall be awarded against a Player or a Team where
the field Umpire is of the opinion that:
(c) a Player has lifted a Player or climbed on the shoulders
of a Player from the same Team. This Free Kick shall
be taken by a Player from the opposing Team where
the infringement occurred or where the football is at
the time of the infringement, whichever is the greater

If it weren't for this, imagine all those shots for goal after quarter sirens and the opposition just stack their players on top of each other in the goal square.

Yea thought it must have been against the rules, otherwise surely people would do it after sirens. Well close the thread then!

I can't remember who it was but I remember a former player talking on the radio about how they attempted to touch a shot at goal like this once or twice. They were told to stop very quickly and I thought the rule was changed because of this

The Brisbane Bears actually did this in a game against Footscray at Carrara in the late 80s, when Simon Beasley was lining up for goal after the final siren.

Beasley missed and Brisbane got the win, but the guys stacking up didn't get anywhere near the footy and it was a pretty bad look.

You know what, I've been saying that for years. Great point there. How on earth can you say it's illegal.

It was David Parkin who suggested it. The AFL moved quickly to tighten the rules to make sure it couldn't happen.

Was there an article years back saying the Baggers were gonna try it out with Matty Lappin?

Seem to remember something along those lines...
