It's unhelpful to make essentialist statements like "X is a bigot" and instead better to call out the specific behavior, like "X's words were bigoted". Someone shouldn't be defined by something they did - and everyone should be encouraged to learn and grow and be forgiven.

Plus, it gives the people arguing in bad faith (like in this thread) no opportunity to play the victim.

It is not bigoted to disagree with the inconsistency applied to recent punishments of using slurs.

It is not bigoted to question whether the AFL would apply the same punishment (more than 5 games now that the increase for every new offence has been applied) to a star player at a bigger club

It is not bigoted to argue with those comparing an organised sporting game to a standard workplace. Yes, you may get fired for using a slur at your work. You probably won’t get tackled through your desk either.

but 5 weeks is too much, and really what will it do? people see others on death row, the murder rate is still high.

id reckon a week, a huge fine, education and some kind of relative community service.

Ok- well if a Geelong player was racist I’m happy if they get a lengthy spell on the sidelines. And I’m very sorry if that happened to Rioli-he needs to put in an offical complaint.
