Will be surpassed by Andrew Mackie in the next few years.
Ignorance levels are high in this thread, but this one takes the cake.

No ordinary footballer plays in 3 premierships.

Tony Shaw spud
Daniel Chick spud
Mathew Lappin spud
Brad Green spud

bombersfan4000 - spud judge of football....

This whole thread is disgusting. Anyone who manages to play 250 games is a special player.
Sure some players are better than others but the achievement of players to get the most out of their abilities and maintaining the durability and fitness to play 250 games should not be underestimated and should be respected.

Tony Shaw spud...LOL.
2 copelands, captain for 7 years, Collingwood team of the century, 313 games. 4 games for Victoria.
All Australian 1984, 1990. AFL Hall of Fame.
bombersfan4000 - I recall he won the Norm Smith medal in 1990 playing against Essendon. Lead the league for total disposals in 1990 as well.

I'll leave Tim Watson to sum up Tony Shaw:
Tim Watson (Essendon Captain 1990) had this to say about Shaw, “Never have I seen a captain drive his team like Tony Shaw. He directed, cajoled, instructed and provided the physical example for his teammates, so much so that I firmly believe Collingwood would never have won the 1990 Grand Final without him”

As for the others - Chick and Green both won their clubs B&F and Lappin topped the Blues goalkicking in 2001 and was All Australian in 2004.

no never saw him play did you., fat, slow, unskilled, couldn't kick the ball further than 40 meters
he was a spud
So if you never saw him play, how you could form that conclusion is beyond me.

I did, and for a lot of his career. He was no donkey.

Sounds like Diesel Williams.

You're still offended about 1990 obviously. Looked good collecting that Norm Smith, huh?

Happy to nominate him as a spud coach though :$

Agree. It's his ability to do the bullshit things - the extraordinary things - that feed the hype...

If he ever unlocks the consistency puzzle they'll be shooting for five in a row.
To be fair he has never really had the chance due to his chronic hamstrings. Only years I think he didn't do a hammy was 08 (first year) and 12 (AA), maybe 2010 not sure.

He will never be able to be that midfield gun, due to fitness and injuries. He is a small forward and a damn good one at that. One of the hardest position's to play as a footballer and he is more defensive than attacking albeit he is impressive in both areas. His game is built on pressure and tackling, his skills and the ability to do the extraordinary make him a very unique player and any football lover must enjoy what he can do.

He is slightly overrated but it's not all his fault. Bruce and injuries have caused this, if he had great hammies he would be rated a lot higher than he is by people on here as 2012 and early 2013 form (before the massive hammy) showed how good he was. I honestly thought in 2013 he was going to take his game to a whole new level. That North Melbourne game he was immense but of course it couldn't last.

Anyway, he is still a very good footballer and someone who you know will always do the defensive things and 1 percenters when it counts. He is not a top 20/30 player in the league though.

Agree with absolutely everything in this post, especially the penultimate sentence. It is his his ability to turn a defensive act or a 1% into an attack within the blink of an eye that make him extremely dangerous.

If he is on that day...forget about it...you will almost certainly lose. I stand by my comment that if he pulled out a year where he was amongst your best 5 players every week, everyone else would be playing for second.

And it's most certainly not his fault he gets so much hype...met him at the Barkly once and he was one of the quietest, most unassuming guys you'd ever come across.

Really? Obviously you could argue that being a 250 game and/or tripple premiershipplayer already makes you an extraordinary footballer, but apart from that I don't find an outrageous assumption that an ordinary/average/whatever players play in a few premierships. Most premiership teams have a few...

Yeh I've heard he has no ego whatsoever. Well said mate, I wish it would happen but I think we all just have to settle for what his current output is. Disappointing in a way but still thankful for what he can do.

Yep. And I reckon he'd be pretty happy belonging to the era he has been a part of...with more success likely.

Being a nephew of both Michael Long and Maurice Rioli does't help the hype cause either.

FWIW, I expect too much from him at times because, as well as the speed he possesses and his Usain Bolt like running ability which excites me at times, he has the ability to kick 4 goals or more.

By all accounts a softly spoken person who seems very family orientated.

If they gave Anzac Medals to every player who was BOG vs Collingwood at the MCG, then Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge would both have four of them. It's a joke the way people list these Anzac Medals among a player's honours and achievements. It's just another BOG for a home and away game.

Two of Hird's Anzac Medals were in games against shithouse Collingwood teams.
In 2000, Collingwood finished 15th (of 16) and won just 7 of their 22 games
In 2004, Collingwood finished 13th (of 16) and won just 8 of their 22 games

.

It is an ANZAC day medal. Not an ANZAC medal.

Couldn't the thread have been called the least good 250 game player?

He pencils us in every year.
