Wasn't he a tagger because he had limited skills for anything else? Distinctly remember him playing that role at times. Think the Pies liked that he was a bit rough around the edges.
Yes we called him a tagger because he was a decent tackler, and if we called him a midfielder too many people would have died laughing.

Regarding Folau he did have an excuse. He had 1 year in neafl and then one in the AFL.Imagine all the players listed in this if they had that footballing background..Just gets judged on fact he was more a marketing idea. Most AfL players have had a aussie rules footy in there hands since they could walk.

Folau got to play afl footy for gws but their tac cup captain and b&f Alex Carey got the arse before they even entered the comp. How is that fair?

could name half of norths fringe players from the last 5 years but the main names that stood out have to be

  • Kyron Hayden: midfielder playing in defence who couldn’t defend and hold onto the ball without getting caught or turning it over.
  • Kanye Turner: worst 100 game player for the club in the last 15 years, the fact he was in our leadership group just shows how much the club was struggling.
  • Atu Bosenavulagi: first few games were ok but anything he did in 2022 was terrible
  • Phoenix Spicer: how could someone with his speed get caught so easily and struggle to hold onto the ball like he did?

Spicer started ok in our VFL this year. Was scared we'd draft him.

I like him and he seemed a good character, thats why he would have been a suitable TAC captain but in Carey's and Sheedys own words he was a bit of a plodder. We had a zillion young mids ahead of him.To promote the game in Western Sydney we had to think outside of the box.We had to spend the advertising money somewhere and when 80% of the list got paid 1st year wages it was a pure business decision.I have no problem with that .Plus it was actually worth a try on someone with his athletic profile.Personally I think.if he played for 5 years with better players around him he would be better than the bottom 20% of talls currently playing. If he had stuck around and played 8 years or so I would take him ahead of Riccardi Keefe and Derkson right now.

Almost as if Carey chose cricket instead of football.

As a fan of the club who does the most whinging about Geelong’s father son recruits you will probably laugh at this but how is that any different to all the spots on past Tiger lists taken up by father son recruits who did nothing, either getting a game or occupying a list position and not playing? And there have been a few.

Patrick Naish
Tom Roach
Mark Pitura
Sean Bowden
Nick Jewell - I mean seriously he was a bloody cricketer; a kid could have been listed the year he was added to the list.

And no this isn’t a dig at Richmond you could make the same argument to any club that’s ever listed a mediocre kid via F/S or an Irish recruit or whatever - it’s a spot in the club that in theory, a more deserving person with a stronger background could occupy.

What about all the aspiring coaches who were primed and ready to potentially take a step towards a head coaching role when the Giants appointed Sheedy who they knew was never going to be a permanent fixture?

The fact was, they knew they weren’t going to win games, they wanted bums on seats. They made a gamble with Folau and it didn’t work but hard luck stories like Carey’s are a dime a dozen and there must have been a reason they left him out. I doubt it was a case of ‘him or Izzy’ competing for the same spot.
