Discussion Worst ever jumper clashes

Ive always thought that alot of the 'visual noise' / 'visual chaos' could be very simply eliminated by ensuring the team with dark shorts arent allowed to wear white boots, and that the colour of socks could be regulated better... in both cases making the cases of 'marginal' clashes less, and allowing teams to wear their 'true' jumpers whenever possible. For example, if in Richmond v Essendon, (Richmond home game) Richmond would wear all yellow socks and black boots, essendon would wear all red socks, white shorts and black or white boots. Then both teams could wear their true guernseys I believe. Theoretically the same for Hawthorn v WCE and the Collingwood/Carlton/Geelong/Port couplets.

That's not as weird as it seems.
Anyone who has done a drawing class will know the human body is the height of 8 times the size of the head. (6 in Brett Ebert's case, but that's an extraordinary case)

If the jumper take up 3/8ths of a uniform, the socks take up 2/8ths (1/4)
1/8 is the area between the socks and shorts, and 1/8th is the head. So those can't be coloured.
However socks and shorts represent as much of the uniform as the jumper.

I've always thought that kits should go with a "majority colour" rule, when both teams have the same colour.
So Geelong v Carlton - Geelong's jumper is majority white, so they can have white shorts and predominantly white socks; Carlton's jumper is majority navy, so they can have navy shorts and predominantly navy socks. Home team picks a guernsey and you build the kits around that.

How does that work for Essendon and Melbourne?
Or StKilda and Carlton?
Or Brisbane and Adelaide?

agree collingwood should be made to wear their traditional jumper (black numbers on a white background) when they play carlton (remind me of the 70, 79 & 81 grand finals)

Or, if it's a Pies home game, you lot should wear your clash. Just like you should have in the 2011 SF.

remember the clash only occurred when collingwood changed their jumper

That rule was thrown out years ago, wasn't it? Away team should always have to avoid a clash, regardless of what the home team wears.

Same.
Home team tells AFL they want to wear certain guernsey - let's use first example, Essendon v Melbourne.
Essendon tell AFL they want to wear black guernsey with red sash.
AFL go OK. Melbourne, your navy guenrsey with red yoke clashes with Essendon's kit. What else you got? White? Cool. So one team is wearing black top, the other white top. Let's make Essendon wear black shorts and Melbourne wear white, which is their preferred shorts for the tops they're wearing anyway. Essendon's black socks with red hoops will distinguish fine against Melbourne's solid red socks.

Create the kits based on what jumper the home team wants to wear.

That's too easy for the AFL though

The year the AFL forced St Kilda to wear our candy stripe design against Essendon despite being the home team was a big deal at the time. I believe we were threatened with a fine despite, once again, being the HOME TEAM.

I believe that is one of those questions philosophers have asked themselves for years.
It ranks alongside 'what is the sound of one hand clapping?' and 'if a tree falls in the forest, and no-one hears it, does it make a sound?' And the slightly less well known, 'if a married man makes a decision, and his wife doesn't realise that he has, is he still wrong?'

In the early years of the Brisbane Bears (1987-1991) they wore a much-maligned maroon and gold jumper which featured a triangular BB emblem in the shape of Queensland on the front. The Bears' home jumper was gold with maroon emblem, numbers and trimmings, and this was inversed for when the Bears played away, with a maroon jumper with gold emblem, numbers and trimmings.

Brisbane's away jumper clashed with Hawthorn badly enough, but had the Bears and Hawks played in Queensland with Brisbane wearing the home jumper, this would have been a nightmare. Does anyone know what happened when the Hawks played the Bears at Carrara during this time?

VFL rules at the time stated that the team that caused the clash had to change. They would have worn the brown jumper against Hawthorn at home.
