Worst start of a season

There have been at least 10 times a side has gone through a season without a win - so it's hard to be worse than that.
Most recent, Fitzroy in 1964 and Hawthorn in 1950.

More recently, Both GWS and GC had horror second season where they went 17 and 14 games without a win to start the season.

If we exclude the expansion sides, Richmond went 0-9 to start 2010. I stopped looking than, because it became too depressing.

Geelong went 0-13 in 1944. Think that is the worst start for them.

Wow thanks 35Daicos exactly what I wanted to know. How did you attain these stats?

35Daicos just does what he does. If he needs an answer he usually finds it, unless it's unfindable. Sometimes he needs to correct info provided by people in the past who didn't have the same ethos back in the day.

Thanks. I have all the (round by round) ladders (1897-2018) lined up in a spreadsheet, so just a matter of using a filter to show all those with 0 wins, and then seeing how far into a season each of the clubs was able to get while still on 0 wins!

In 1909, the only game stkilda won was the very last game of the season, after 17 straight loses.

That was 1910. St Kilda did indeed have a 0-17 record going into the last game, and somehow beat League-leading Carlton (15-2), who were 3 wins clear of the second place team, by 12 points. A rather suspicious looking result, one might say!!

Yes just realised I was a year early.

And in a era when allegations of corruption were rampant and knowing a few weeks later Carlton would have players suspended for several years over bribery.

Ross Lyon's inspriration. He forget to check what happened in the finals.. Carlton lost both the semi final and the grand final! This Match Report spent more time calling for a 15-yard penalty to be imposed for holding after a mark, than it did reporting on the actual game!

VFA Second Division team Sunshine Crows began 1981 with a loss of 290-points - 52.31-343 to 8.5-53 - to Waverley, with Panthers' full forward Paul Angelis kicking 23 goals. It doesn't get much worse than that, and things didn't improve for the hapless Sunshine. They lost all 18 games and had a percentage of just 32 at season's end, getting no closer than 8 goals to any opponent that year.

In the 1991 AFL season, future merger partners Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears both had terrible starts to the season and neither won until close to the halfway point, although the Bears were more competitive without actually winning. Fitzroy's season began with losses of 131, 59, 16, 24, 157, 44, 77 & 99 points, before the Lions upset Geelong by 21 points in Round 10. Brisbane lost games by 46, 57, 102, 22, 31, 13, 69, 5 & 7 points, then the Bears broke through by blitzing the Swans at the SCG in a high scoring match at the SCG. Unfortunately for Brisbane they soon came crashing back to Earth, West Coast, Hawthorn and Adelaide inflicting thrashings by 52, 87 & 66 points in their next three outings.

I am led to believe the only ever 0-22 season is Sturt in 1995?

Yes, the 1995 Sturt are the only winless team that has gone 0-22 in a season. Since 1990 there have been teams go winless in the VFL/VFA (Camberwell, Coburg, Williamstown, Bendigo, Frankston), TAC Cup (Northern Knights), WAFL (Peel Thunder) and NEAFL (Gold Coast Suns), but these all took place in seasons of 18 or 20 matches.

After one game into the 1958 season, it looked like being a long, hard year for the Kangaroos. North Melbourne had copped a 120-point thrashing from Fitzroy, 23.21-159 to 5.9-39 at Arden Street, and sat on the bottom of the ladder with a percentage of 24.5. Amazingly the Kangaroos turned things around form this point and made the finals, defeating the Lions by 4 points in the first semi final before falling to eventual premier Collingwood in the preliminary final.

Two years earlier, the reverse had happened. A 15.8-98 to 5.11-41 demolition of lowly St. Kilda in Round 1 1956 put North on top of the ladder with a percentage of 239.0, but from there it was all downhill for the Kangaroos. By Round 12 they had taken the Saints' place on the bottom of the ladder and that's where they stayed, North Melbourne collecting the 1956 wooden spoon with a 3.15 record and a poor percentage of 69.6.

In the Tasmanian Football League in 1997, Hobart endured a winless season of 0-18.
They suffered horrendous losses of 116, 151, 117, 141, 127, 182, 169, 237, 172, 106, 34, 23, 85, 53, 163, 132, 160 and 48.
They totalled 720 points for and 2918 points against for a percentage of 24.06%.
At the time Hobart were in near financial ruin facing debts of up to $500,000 and a string of creditors circling for their money, the media wanting them to be cut from the TFL.
After losing their final 21 games of TFL football, they left the TFL and joined the SFL in 1998 and amazingly won a flag the following year.
South Launceston lost 34 games in a row between 1989-1991 also.

Nth Darwin having been premiers in 80/81
lost to Waratahs by 14 goals the first game of the 81/82

On the telly (NTD8) they interviewed the tahs coach afterward
who must of thought he was gonna have a terrific season

At the end of the season Nth D were last with 2 wins
Waratahs finished second last
