Worst umpired game you've seen?

Round 2 2008 vs Brisbane. We led by 3 goals at 3QT and Vozzo gave three ridiculous frees directly in front of Brisbane's goal to get them in front with five minutes to go. We then took it forward in the last minute and Rocca got blatantly shoved in back - nothing.

Lost the game by 2 points and ultimately cost us a top 4 spot.

There was a Fitzroy v Adelaide game in the 1990s that was shown on here a while ago, I think there's a YouTube video of it. I'm not saying the umpires were paid off in that game, but if the umpires were ever paid off to fix an AFL match, that's probably what it would look like. WWE-calibre officiating.

The 2012 game between Geelong and West Coast at Subiaco was pretty special as well. I don't think either team was particularly favoured, but Eagles and Cats fans will remember it as the game where we saw about as many deliberate out of bounds decisions as we had in all the games played up to that point (and it was pretty late in the season). It was bordering on comical.

Oh man and the fact that they tried pretending that wasn't the rule of the week afterwards...

I was watching that game at a bar without sound. At first everyone watching was totally confused and it took a few instances until we realised what was going on. Ended up yelling "deliberate" every time it went out of bounds no matter for innocuous it was and it still seemed like a majority of the time it was actually paid!

IIRC it got to the point that Lonergan punched it out of bounds from a contest and they still went and payed deliberate for it :drunk::drunk::drunk:

Possibly the worst single decision I've ever seen in my life was an incorrect interchange infringement paid against Geelong in a game against Hawthorn a few years back, when Hawthorn was mounting a furious comeback. The interchange steward got it completely wrong even though that was his only job. Considering how costly those penalties are, how the wrong decision could have easily cost Geelong the game (from memory Hale kicked a goal from the top of the square, cutting the margin to under a kick, then Geelong steadied) and considering how easy it is to judge whether an infringement has been paid, that one takes some topping. I can't remember a single decision making me so angry; it even turned the tables on AFL 360 the following Monday, where Gerard became a raving lunatic when recapping the incident and Robbo looked calm and measured in comparison.

Wasn't that the same game as this gem?

Geelong vs adelaide semi final. The final of the Colbert mark. But that was one of only about 35 dud decisions that heavily favoured one side.

Yeah, the goal to Geelong off Bickleys shin was a shocker as well. Its lucky that Adelaide won considering "35 duds decisions" that went against them.

I don't really have a worst game, I have a set of games I guess. Hawthorn Geelong games 08-13
Used to have seats where Franklin used to lead 80% of the time, I'm pretty sure you know the spot but the amount of shit defenders used to get away with on him. The holding, the chopping of the arms. If I remember correctly Hawthorn actually sent many 'please explains' to the AFL regarding the bias against him

Any game Leigh Fisher umpires Freo is usually a farce. Had him for a game v the Dogs in 2014, won by 40 or so but Freo got 4 free kicks for the game. It was so hard to watch, just the most blatant frees ignored. Worst I can remember for Freo.

Also remember a few years ago, a Freo player popped his shoulder out in a contest & was trying to get off the ground and got a 50m paid against him for not clearing the area quick enough. Forget who it was (player or umpire) but absolutely no common sense used at all

Hawthorn v Adelaide PF in 2012 was deplorable to the point that Gieschen had to apologise to the Crows.

The Hawks 2013 PF against Port wasn't far behind. That umpiring in the final minute was criminal.
2014? Yeah I'm still annoyed about those last few minutes.
They missed a clear hold on Hodge just before they paid him the questionable HTB.
Then in that final play, Monfries clearly held Lake in the marking contest and then got him high and no free wtf? and then people want HTB against Lake but when you look at the replay footage you can see the ball come out the back and a Port player pushes it back in when he had 2 players to give it off to.

To really understand the throat-gagging outrage that this game generated, you have to know it was Adelaide's first season, one of Fitzroy's last, and there were a lot of Victorians already pissed off at how the AFL seemed hell-bent on extinguishing local clubs in order to make room for interstate ones. Today, it's taken for granted that nationalization of the game is a good thing, but that wasn't the case back then.

Adelaide, seen in Victoria as a manufactured team, came in and obliterated the previously-mighty Hawthorn by 86 points in the first game of 1991, while Fitzroy, the team the AFL wanted to kill, went winless for the first 9 games. They had one win by Round 12, when this game was played. Then they did something amazing, taking it right up to the Crows at their home ground in Adelaide.

Then the umps did this, and Adelaide won by 3 points. Someone vandalized AFL House with spray paint that night. Whether you believed the conspiracy theories or not, it was impossible not to feel like the Roys got horribly screwed over.

1980 prelim Collingwood vs Geelong that the Cats lost by 3 points to miss out on playing Tigers in Grand Final.
Billy Goggin the Geelong coach was livid after game with umpiring and was asked a please explain by VFL to avoid a substantial fine.
Goggin proceeded to watch entire replay of game with the then umpire boss Harry Beitzel, after review of game Bietzel apologized to Goggin for the poor standard of umpiring and no fine was handed out. Umpire Smith one of the two officiating umpires gave Geelong one free kick for game, while also not paying marks to Geelong players that were marks among many other dubious frees or non frees.
Foot note - Collingwood went on to play Richmond in 1980 Grand Final and LOST by a record margin at time of 83 points. Geelong had previously beaten the Tigers at the MCG with five rounds remaining of the home and away season. I'm sure Richmond would have still won the 1980 flag such was their dominance but not by the 83 points farce.
Geelong supporters have long memories. You guys still bring up the 1967 Grand Final.

My best mate at time was a Tiger supporter so we mixed going to Geelong and Richmond games and yes I do have good memory as your last premiership side in 1980 was one the better footy teams I've seen ( Bartlett, Weightman, Roach, Raines, Cloke and co ), pity Tiger supporters have had to endure such hardship since..... amazingly after all the shit you have been through since, you have an incredible 70K members, that's what I call 'loyalty'.

PS - you may longer be the best team or successful club but for sure you have the best theme song... cheers Richard!

Does anyone know what that last free was for in the Fitzroy game?
Looking at the video, sounds like the commentators said that the umpire called "Holding the ball". You can also see the umpire go down in that motion.

WCE vs Collingwood last year at Etihad. We won comfortably but the umpiring favouritism in that game to Collingwood was so bad I couldn't stop laughing. Literally the worst game I have ever seen in terms of umpiring and I watch replays of all our home games...

Nothing will surpass the disgrace that was Adelaide being handed a win over Fitzroy.. Hold your head in shame AFL. You couldn't even call me biased when you watch the frees they handed out. Rips the heart out of any loyal Lions supporter to watch it.

Qclash 1 is up there as well. I dare anyone to watch that and say it didn't look suspicous. Lions came back and got in front and the umps found a handful of free kicks for the Suns out of their pocket and most right in front of goal. I think they had nearly double in the free kick count. I've since spoken to a journo who was at the game who said it was beyond a joke in the end.
