His showdown in round 23 was a return to what I expect he'll grow on this year
Yeah he looked very good in that game.
Only problem I see in his development this year is our coaching staff(Hinkley).
I don’t think he falls into the inner circle group so he will have to be playing out of his skin early to get a go.
Just hope we can hold onto him.

I think Xavier will love playing under Carr's midfield coaching. Carr has a very positive, encouraging and attacking style of coaching. This should help Xavier to overcome his recent lack of confidence and tendancy to be too hard on himself.
I sure hope so. Love Duursma. I think Hinkley's handling / coaching of Xavier has been shite.

I think it's time for Duurs to drop the bow and arrow, it was a bit of fun but now time to get serious young fella.
I don't really see the link between his performance and doing the arrow.

PORT Adelaide midfielder Xavier Duursma wants to put two disappointing seasons behind him and make the wing his own in 2023 after rediscovering his running power during an off-season of reflection.

Duursma made an exciting start to his career in 2019 and played 35 games across his first two seasons, but he has been restricted to just 11 games in each of the past two years because of injury and form struggles. The 22-year-old worked with both the Power's mindset coach and club psychologist during the off-season, while also reflecting on his strengths, with a determination to get his aerobic assets back this year.

"I went away in the off-season and worked pretty hard on, number one, being healthy, and then working really hard about getting my routine right," Duursma said on Friday. "Doing that, I discovered a few things about myself … and I've learned what is good for me and what is not. "Getting back to my actual strengths and understanding what they are and implementing them on the training track is really giving me some confidence in myself right now."

Probably not uncommon for a young player to burst onto the scene in their first 1 or 2 years when there's no pressure of expectation and attention from opposition players. Then over the next 1 or 2 years it becomes a struggle to deal with expectation and opposition attention. Hopefully years 4/5 onwards the player comes out the other side as a hard working mature athlete that understands and can deal with what it takes to succeed.

Did get a bit of a bum steer, told to bulk up and work on his inside game to move into a centre square midfielder. Wrecked his knee. Then we moved Rozee, JHF, Butters all into the Square. Duursma’s trajectory takes another turn.

Will be following Port games this year for two obvious reasons. Made a mental note that this bloke looked pretty impressive, particularly with his running. Surprised he is considered down the pecking order. To my eye, looks like he is primed for a good year.

Last season they bulked him up too much for a wingman and it hurt his mobility, as well as getting an injury last season.

Now he (and Bergman) are on the wing the most during centre bounces.

It’s only a surprise to the inept coaching panel we had last season who looked at the same attributes you just described and thought (with my best Steve Irwin voice ) “Wowwe we could take that gut running winger whose never played inside mid EVER and turn him into Ollie Wines if we just add 20kg of muscle”

Wish I was joking
