gr8 concept playing all 3 games up the hill , hope a good crowd follows.

Excellent game of footy played up on the other hill at the lakers oval with the thunder the winners by around 30pts having kicked 18 second half goals! The home side were very good early but the thunder jumped them early in the third kicking 6 b4 the lakers new what was going on. Kinglake fought it out wrestling the lead back a couple of times in the last half but the thunder iced it late in the final term. The lakers will be better as the season progresses with a few to return but so will the thunder.

Just a quick side bar to all who come across kinglake.....watch 5 and 37 as their arms and other body parts tend to conect to oppositions heads when the footy is no were near them..shame because the lakers are a great club with fantastic people involved and a team capable of doing the job without the actions of a few.

Hats off to Yarra Glen yesterday. They certainly put us to the sword in the second half. Their new faces stood up and performed when the chips were down. We're definitely looking forward to the return game later in the year.

On the other issue you brought up Thunder, the saying about the pot and the kettle comes to mind. Our skipper came to the quarter time huddle looking like Buzz Lightyear. He had been whacked around the chin more than once. I wont put The Yarra Glen player's number on a public forum but needless to say we all knew who did it.

On the flipside it was great to see all the Yarra boys come into the rooms for a beer after the game.

Looks like there will be lots of competition for a finals berth this year.:):)

Was this a very spiteful game? Or just a
good old fashion hard hit out? 2 top teams,
lots of pressure to pre form after all the
talk over summer??

YVMDF&NL Netball Wrap: April 10
by Carli Mitchell

With a new year comes a new season. And with a new season, comes a new challenge. Saturday saw the start of the 2010 YVMDF&NL season, and with it came some fantastic games. Division 2 kicked off on Saturday, with a couple of close games; Seville managed to hold off a persistent Alexandra, winning the game 33 – 28 at their home ground, and Kinglake managing to score a win over Yarra Glen, 31 – 22. Seville hosted Alexandra on a cold and wet weekend, and coming off a very satisfying pre-season, the girls defeated the visiting team in what was to be the match of the round. In a match that was played in Kinglake’s indoor stadium, the home team, after a struggle with Yarra Glen for most of the game, the Laker’s managed to fend off a very promising Yarra Glen side by winning by 9 goals.

Yarra Junction hosted Powelltown this week, and it saw the home team suffer their first loss of the season to last year’s premiers. Winning by a very comfortable 17 goals, the girls of Powelltown could do no wrong in their win over the girls from Yarra Junction, winning 46 - 29.

Thornton Eildon, after a finals berth last season, suffered a defeat at home at the hands of Emerald over the weekend, who in turn are continuing their fine form from the 2009 season. The visiting team wasted no time in settling into the match, where they blew Thornton away with accurate shooting and dominance in the centre court. With a promising start to the season, Emerald would be happy with their 58 – 12 thrashing of the home side.

Belgrave’s move to A grade after an excellent debut season in 2009 was always going to be tough as they played the talented Yea netballers. Yea is a powerhouse when it comes to netball and Belgrave will no doubt improve. Belgrave’s 84 – 11 loss is not as bad as the score line may suggest.

With only one game from Division 1 last weekend, it saw the girls from Woori Yallock travel to Wandin, and endure a 40 goal loss at the hands of the home team. Olivia Aughton, Courtney McDonald and Alex Priestley, named as the team’s best players, helped Wandin defeat Woori Yallock 61 – 21.

YVMDFN&L Football Wrap
Round One: April 10

Division 2

Kinglake v Yarra Glen
There was a lot of hype about Yarra Glen in the off season and at half time of their game against Kinglake that’s all it seemed it was, hype. Kinglake looked to have Yarra Glen’s measure and went into the long break with a 4 goal lead. Nobody at the game could have predicted what was about to happen in the 3rd quarter. In what was and probably will be the most exciting and skilled quarter of football for the season there was a massive 18 goals kicked, it was Yarra Glen that turned it on from the opening bounce of the term. Within 10 minutes the Glen slammed on 6 goals to take the lead and the ascendancy. Kinglake did hit back and managed to pinch back the lead halfway through the term but Yarra Glen hadn’t finished with their goal onslaught and booted a further 6 goals for a 12 goal Quarter. Kinglake by no means played badly as they did boot 6 majors themselves but it was Yarra Glen’s run that Kinglake couldn’t contain. This game was still up for grabs at the last change with Yarra Glen holding a 13 point lead. Kinglake kicked the 1st goal of the term to cut back the lead but Yarra Glen hit back within seconds which seemed to stave off any come back that Kinglake could muster. Yarra Glen finished the day in fine form with a 6 goal to 3 final quarter to beat last year’s runners-up by 31 points. Yarra Glen 21.11.137 defeated Kinglake 16.10.106. A fantastic round 1 game between 2 teams that should feature deep into September.
Yarra Glen Goal Kickers: M. Attard 5, P. Moate 4, R. Kueffer 3, G. Braden 3
Yarra Glen’s Best: D. Watt, S. Roberts, P. Moate.
Kinglake Goal Kickers: L. Nott 4, B. Gallichio 4.
Kinglake’s Best: M. Thomas, D. Harris, D, Pywell

Seville v Alexandra
Alexandra coming down from 1st division after a horror year would have been looking to get off to a good start against Seville but unfortunately for them it wasn’t to be. Seville only held a 2 goal lead at quarter time but it was Seville’s pace and excellent use of the ball in the second term that saw them slam on 8 goals to 2 to put the game beyond doubt going into the long break with a 50 point lead. Things got worse in the 2nd half for Alexandra as Seville had too many targets down forward that couldn’t be contained. Seville added 10 goals in the 2nd half while Alexandra could only manage another 3. Seville running out easy 94 point winners and sending a message they maybe the team to beat: Seville 22.12.144 defeated Alexandra 7.8.50.
Seville Goal Kickers: Kane Jones 7, Brendan James 6, Shane Smith 5
Seville’s Best: Brendan James, Kane Jones, Brent Pereira.

Belgrave v Yea
An entertaining game that was enjoyed by an enthusiastic crowd at Belgrave’s temporary home ground at Narre Warren for the 2010 season. This game was up for grabs for most of the day as the goals just kept on coming. There were 39 goals booted in total for the day. The First quarter was a ripper as both teams played quick running football and shared the ball brilliantly. It was Yea that went to the first break with a 2 goal lead after booting 7.1 to Belgrave’s 5.1. The 2nd quarter was where this game was won as Belgrave grabbed the ascendancy and started putting on scoreboard pressure. Belgrave kicked 7.3 to Yea’s 2 goals to take a handy 21 point lead into half time. The 2nd half was a hard fought affair with Yea challenging but never quite able to get a 2 or 3 goal run on to put the pressure right back on Belgrave. It was 9 goals a piece in the 2nd half with Belgrave outscoring Yea by just the 2 behinds. Belgrave would be wrapped to have a first up win after a disappointing 2010 and Yea will take a lot of positives from this game where both teams played some excellent football. Belgrave 21.12.138 defeated Yea 18.7.115.
Belgrave Goal Kickers: Peter Gough 7, Jesse Pearce 7,
Belgrave’s Best: Darren Leaumont, Peter Gough, Jesse Pearce
Yea Goal Kickers: Thomas Butterworth 3, Patrick Mckenna 3, Chris Leathman 3
Yea’s Best: Chris Graham, Thomas Butterwoth, James Clavarino.

Thornton Eildon v Emerald
A fairly even game for most of the day between these 2 sides that would both be confident of improving on last seasons form. Thornton at home is always a hard task for any opposition but it was Emerald that had the answers. Emerald stretched their lead as the game went on but Thornton was never out of touch. The only real difference between the sides was that Emerald had more avenues to goal with 11 goal kickers compared to Thornton’s 6. Emerald 14.18.102 defeated Thornton Eildon 10.11.71. Both teams looked good in patches with plenty of improvement to come, it will be interesting to see how these sides stack up against the rest of the opposition. Emerald Goal Kickers: Nick Green 2, Kade Yeo 2, Steven Wright 2.
Emerald’s Best: Daniel Porter, Jason Cousins, Kristian Fidanza.
Thornton Eildon’s Goal Kickers: David Cornish, David Phillips, Rhys Chapman
Thornton Eildon’s Best: Matthew Bell, Mark Hardy, Daniel Creed.

Yarra Junction v Powelltown
Both sides would be confident for a finals berth this season and they started the season off with a very competitive game that was anybody’s to grab at 3 qtr time. Yarra Junction started the better with a 3.5 to 1.1 first term and looked to have the game under control but Powelly wasn’t going to lay down as they hit back with a 3 goal to 1 2nd term which saw Junction go to the main break with a slender 1 point margin. The 3rd quarter was a bruising affair with neither team giving an inch. Powelltown kicked 4 goals to Junction 3 to take a 1 goal lead going into the last term. Yarra Junction saved their best footy for last as they proved they can play as well as any other side in the competition, they finished in fantastic fashion booting 8 goals to 1 to win by an impressive 38 points. Yarra Junction 14.12.96 defeated Powelltown 8.10.58.
Yarra Junction Goal Kickers: Justin Gates 3, Tyson Wheeler 3.
Yarra Junction’s Best: Justin Gates, Sam Ismail, Gregory Selby.
Powelltown Goal Kickers: Luke Miller 2, Chris Ozols 2
Powelltown’s Best: Luke Miller, Luke Darwall, Samuel Preston

Division 1
Wandin v Woori Yallock
Only one game in 1st division as the rest of the round kicks off next week and what a game it turned out to be. Wandin had a disappointing year last season while Woori Yallock just fell short in the Grand Final. From the outside you would have thought an easy start for the Runners-up but it wasn’t to be. Wandin came out of the blocks in the first term and before Woori knew what hit them they were staring at a 4 goal deficit at quarter time. The 2nd quarter was an even affair as Woori tried to get themselves back into the game but Wandin went with them and in fact outscored Woori by 1 behind to take a 25 point lead going into the main break. Woori came out in the 3rd term and was hell bent on getting back into the game, they started to use the ball more efficiently and probably should have been in front at the last change but were wasteful kicking 5.6 to 3.1 in the third. Wandin holding a 5 point lead at 3qtr time. As brave as Wandin was it was Woori Yallock’s class that got them over the line, Woori finished the day kicking 6 goals to 1 in the last quarter to win by 33 points. Wandin would be disappointed with the loss but they are certainly not going to be a pushover this season. Woori Yallock 16.20.116 defeated Wandin 12.11.83.
Woori Yallock Goal Kickers: Mitchell Bonuda 6, Damien Monkhorst 3.
Woori Yallock’s Best: Mitchell Bonuda, Matthew Stolarczyk, Patrick Sharp.
Wandin Goal Kickers: Matthew Peterson 4, Matthew Ewart 2.
Wandin’s Best: Jack Bayliss, Tom Goodwin, Mathew Peterson.

Can anyone from Yarra Glen please give us an update on the fella who was taken to hospital late in yesterday's game??? Not 100% sure but I thought it was their coach Dean??? (#15) - no matter who it was its something you just hate seeing occur in football, & I truly hope he is ok and on the mend.

Whilst on Yarra Glen, if anyone thinks they're gunna get near them I'd be very very suprised. Obviously they didn't feel they put four quarters together last week & Yea managed to pinch the 3rd of them of them yesty & hung tough in two other 10 minute bursts - but when they were all up & going they looked awesome & extremely well drilled for district footy :thumbsu:

Dean is alright. He had some stiches in the back of his head and is nursing a bit of a sore head.
It really is something you hate seeing.
I know he reads this so cheers for the concern.

Must've been a big hit.
Deano's one tough hombre, how'd the other fella end up ?
All the best mate, YG up and about and fair to say mostly to do with yourself.

Our boys worked pretty hard for 3 qtrs on the weekend but got smashed in the last v Monny.
We never really looked in the game from early on.
Monbulk (as always), superbly drilled, highly skilled and fit and will definately challenge Upwey
(huge game this Sunday at Upwey, maybe watch this instead of the Pies)
A couple of very good inclusions as well as 2nd & 3rd year players stepping up.
Luke McCormick ; absolutely smoken hot footballer !
Lots of work for the OFC boys but will only improve from here !

Watching Healesville and Gembrook kick 13 goals between them in fine and still conditions on Saturday made me think it would be an interesting exercise to work out the average score kicked at each ground. This is for the period 1995 - 2010 (I have discounted grounds where less than ten matches were played in that time):

Silvan 121 matches played; 105.4 average score
Powelltown 119 104.3
Worawa 23 104.3
South Belgrave 111 100.9
Kinglake 27 98.3
Warburton 157 98.1
Croydon North 33 97.2
Wandin 133 97.1
Upwey 131 95.6
Yarra Junction 126 95.5
Alexandra 38 95.0
Kilsyth 38 94.8
Thornton 36 94.6
Avonsleigh 135 94.0
Yarra Glen 136 93.1
Mount Evelyn 70 92.9
Olinda 115 91.5
Monbulk 137 90.0
Gembrook 165 89.0
Yea 19 89.0
Belgrave 129 87.3
Woori Yallock 144 84.4
Seville 131 83.5
Healesville 172 80.7
Boronia Park 18 79.7

So, scoring will be about 30% heavier at Silvan than at Healesville. No doubt mostly due to the respective sizes of the grounds. On the other hand, scoring at the small Belgrave ground has been relatively low, probably due to the quality of the surface - currently being fixed. Since Silvan's ground was resurfaced in 2007, teams have averaged a massive 137.4 points there. But again, this is only partly attributed to the resurfacing. The other factor was that Silvan's forward line kept kicking double-century scores.

Must've been a big hit.
Deano's one tough hombre, how'd the other fella end up ?
All the best mate, YG up and about and fair to say mostly to do with yourself.

haven't heard but he woulda got 2-3 stitches also I'd imagine

I spoke to a fella today who works with Deano.
Few minutes to go, got shoved in mid air in a marking contest. Bad head clash with another player who I think had a bucket of stitches in his head.
Deano out cold for a few minutes, then woke up then out again for a bit.
Reported to work this morning though lol
I didn't think the other bloke would've been unscathed !!!

Division 1
In perfect netball conditions, last year’s reigning premiers played Upwey Tecoma at home at the weekend, and Mount Evelyn continued in the same form that saw them win last year’s honours. Though it was a struggle throughout most of the game, Mount Evelyn was much more polished with their defending and their passing which saw them win the game 58 – 33. With accurate scoring from both Sarah Hogan and Kat Youlten, Mount Evelyn should be going into round 2 against Woori Yallock with lots of confidence.

Olinda Ferny Creek, moving up to Division 1 from Division 2 for this season, travelled to Monbulk this week, and it saw the Hawks beat the visiting team in what would be a very satisfying win. Coming off a strong pre-season and playing at home, it gave the Hawks a good advantage over Olinda in a game that saw both clubs in a struggle for the four points. By the conclusion of the match, however, Monbulk defeated Olinda Ferny Creek 42- 28, in what was to be the closest match of the round. Olinda should be strengthened next week with the return of several players from the grueling Oxfam 100 k walk.

Playing at home for round 1, Healesville hosted Gembrook Cockatoo at Badger Creek Primary School, and it saw the home team win 71 – 26 in a very dominant performance in all aspects of the court. On a perfect day for netball without barely a breeze to hinder the ball’s movements, Healesville played with confidence and daring in a game that the girls should be very satisfied with, as it is an improvement from last season.

Division 2
Yarra Junction played at home against Alexandra this week, and the girls came off with a very good win against the visiting side. Coming off from a loss last week, the girls from Yarra Junction were looking to improve with a win, and they did, beating Alexandra 38 – 21 in a match that was very close until the outset. Although the girls from Alexandra didn’t get the four points, they played very well against the girls who finished in the top five last season.

After finishing in the top five last season, Thornton Eildon suffered a loss at the hands of Seville, who in turn are improving on their form from last year with a strong pre-season behind them. Coming into the match off a round 1 win, Seville played beautiful netball with few mistakes made at home. Defeating the visiting Thornton Eildon 55 – 11, Seville will be entering round 3 with great confidence against Belgrave.

Powelltown continued their fine form from last season, carrying on into round two with a strong win over Belgrave at home. The reigning premiers played amazing netball with strong defending, precision in the centre court and accurate shooting - nothing could possibly go wrong. Winning by a margin of 69 goals, Powelltown should be a finals contender once again this year, with their 88 – 19 goal win against Belgrave boosting their confidence.

Yea hosted Yarra Glen this week, and they’re continuing their good form by winning 2 from 2. Coming off a strong win against Belgrave last week, Yea played a daring and fantastic game against the girls from Yarra Glen. After a finals appearance last season that saw the girls from Yea just miss the grand final, the girls are looking to make up for the chances missed last year, and their 69 – 12 win against Yarra Glen was no exception to this.

In the upset of the round, Kinglake have procured possibly their best victory by defeating the highly talented Emerald outfit in a tough encounter. Kinglake’s Stacey Chalmers starred in an outstanding performance. Kinglake got off to a flyer and was leading 13 6 at quarter time. By 3 qtr time, Emerald had eroded Kinglake’s lead to only one and it looked like Emerald were gearing up to run away with victory. Kinglake clearly had other intentions and were masterful drawing clear in the final stages with a 34 - 31 victory. Emerald will also be keen next week to welcome back several of their key players after their 100k Oxfam walk on the weekend.

YVMDF&NL Football Wrap - April 17

Division 1
Healesville hosted Gembrook Cockatoo and you would have thought this was going to be a high goal scoring game in such perfect conditions. It was anything but the opposite. Gembrook’s defence was outstanding all day holding the Bloods to just 3 goals while Gembrook finished the day with 10. Gembrook 10.9.69 defeated Healesville 3.11.29. The Brookers set the win up in the 1st half going to the long break with a 32 point lead. The second half was a battle of the backlines as there were only 4 goals kicked. Gembrooks Lee Clark was outstanding down forward booting 6 of his teams 10 goals. Gembrook’s best: Nathan Laversha, Andrew Walker and Ricky Clark. Healesville’s best: Joshua Goding, Luke Gardiner and Trent Krikas.

Newcomers to 1st division Olinda Ferny Creek traveled to Monbulk and were shown no mercy as Monbulk handed them a 65 point thumping. Monbulk 15.18.108 defeated Olinda 6.7.43. Olinda did battle hard and managed to stay in touch up to 3 quarter time but Monbulk’s class shone out in the last as they ran away with the game booting 8 goals to 1. Shaun Lucas and Timothy Wragg did the damgage up forward for the winners booting 4 goals each. Monbulk’s best: Luke McCormick, Kieran Gray & Shaun Kelp. Olinda Ferny Creek’s best: Benjamin Day, Garrett McDonald and Owen Millwood.

Last years Premiers Upwey Tecoma took on Mt Evelyn at Mt Evelyn and came away with a very hard fought 12 point victory. Upwey 18.18.126 defeated Mt Evelyn 16.18.114. This was a fantastic contest that went right down to the wire. Mt Evelyn started slightly better and looked just a touch more polished than Upwey in the first half. The Mounters went into the long break with a 9 point lead. Upwey came out after the break and started to show some of last years premiership form to hit the front by 5 points at 3 qtr time, if not for inaccuracy they could have been further ahead after a 5.6 to 4.4 term. The last quarter was a great battle with Upwey holding out Mt Evelyn in a great game that’s going to be hard to top this season. Upwey Tecoma’s best: Steve Dawson, Jayden Orger and Simon Mitchell (6 goals) Mt Evelyn’s best: Benjamin Farrugia, Steven Tesoriero and Chris Haworth.

Warburton Millgrove 25.23.173 defeated Silvan 17.8.110. A whopping 42 goals scored between these two sides and it was Warby that got off to an absolute flyer kicking 8.8 in the first qtr and holding Silvan to just 3 behinds. It looked like how far Warby. The remainder of the game turned out to be reasonably even as both teams added 17 goals each. Warby was wasteful in front of the big sticks and should have ended up with more majors. Silvan to their credit did hit back after a shocking start and was only outscored by 10 points after 1/4 time. Warburton Millgrove’s best: Grant Newing, Adam Newing and James Iacono. Silvan’s best: Ben Straughair, Darcy Wale and Sean Toohey.

Division 2
Yarra Junction 15.10.100 defeated Alexandra 13.10.88 in an enthralling game that both teams should be proud of. Alex held a 6 point lead at half time and would have been thinking this was their best chance for a win for over a year. Yarra Junction however wasn’t going to be denied as they booted 5 goals to 3 in the 3rd qtr to take a 9 point lead going into the last. Alexandra had their chances in the final term but it was Junction that made the most of their chances kicking 4.1 to Alex’s 3.4 to take the four points in a great contest. Yarra Junctions best: Nicholas Syme, Darcy Kiernan and Hugh Wadsworth. Alexandra’s best: Patrick Cummins (5 goals), Brendan Leary and James Kidd.

Kinglake got on the winners list after their first round loss to Yarra Glen by defeating Emerald in a big way. Kinglake 19.20.134 defeated Emerald 10.5.65. After an even first half with Kinglake leading by just 10 points the Lakers then turned it on after the break booting 10.8 and holding Emerald to just 1 goal for the half. Kinglake mounted attack after attack from their backline that Emerald just couldn’t answer. Kinglake’s best: James Atkins, Luke Nott (5 goals) and Jacob Sibenaler. Emerald’s best: Jason Cousins, Rodney Sonogan.

Belgrave remain undefeated after accounting for Powelltown by 24 points. Belgrave 20.17.137 defeated Powelltown 15.23.113. There certainly isn’t much between these two sides and it was just going to come down to who could use the ball more efficiently. Powelltown did have just as much of the ball as their opponents and in fact had one more scoring shot, however it was Belgrave that was more direct and their 6 goal to 2 third quarter set up what was an impressive win. Belgrave’s best: Peter Gough, Jayson Boek and Kris Stasek (4 goals). Powelltown’s best: Sam Camilleri (6 goals), Barry Mc Donald and Chris Ozols.

Seville 14.17.101 defeated Thornton Eildon 13.5.83. The first half of this game was outstanding. The first quarter it was Seville with the ascendancy with 6 goals to 4 but Thornton then hit back to take the lead into half time after a 7 goal to 2 second quarter, 11.3.69 to 8.5.53 at the half. Seville should have put this game away in the 3rd term but scoring a wasteful 2.9 to Thornton’s 1.2 saw Thornton holding a narrow 3 point lead at the last change. Seville finished the stronger and looked to have more legs than their opponents as Seville finished the day kicking 4.3 to 1 goal in the last term to win in what some would consider a lucky victory. Seville’s best: Dean Troyahn, Paul Lister and Thomas Eddy. Thornton Eildon’s best: Sam Creighton, Shannon Galea and Andrew Redden.

Yarra Glen is now a clear flag favorite with a massive 99 point win over Yea at Yea. Yarra Glen 23.20.158 defeated Yea 9.5.59. Yarra Glen got off to a flying start booting 9 goals to 2 in the first quarter and backed it up with a 6 goal to 1 second term. Yarra Glen’s Ryan Kueffer was unstoppable down forward and finished the day with 8 majors. Yea certainly didn’t give up as they came out after the halftime break and took it right up up to Yarra Glen and in fact outscored them 5 goals to 3 for the quarter. Yarra Glen did finish the better and scored 5 goals to 1 in the final quarter to win impressively for the second week in a row. Yarra Glen’s best: Ryan Kueffer (8 goals), Russell Cowen and Michael Ashton. Yea’s best: Chris Graham, Michael McKenna and Andrew Ferguson.

Stats dont really mean much to me.Football has changed a lot with the modern game of zoning.lf you were at the game you would have noticed that both back lines were very mean in defence and it was hard to kick goals.Gembrooks backline in particular the old fella Steve Robins played a superb backmans game on the highly rated full forward Dean Selkrig.(l think l have spelt his name right.)and had plenty of support from his team mates.l have watched Dean in second division when he kicked over a ton and there is no doubt this bloke can play footy.Pretty happy he had a quiet one against the brookers.Dont worry about Healseville they will not be happy with the loss at home and lookout the next side that plays there.
