You are Richmond's list manager, what do you do this off season?

I have no doubt we could still get Trelor its all about the $ mate on offer .

Then we should have a crack at him for sure. Sign Kruezer and get a 3rd party involved and use Maric as the key piece to make it happen.

If we get him to commit to us, do not over-pay. If he is wishy-washy and obviously playing us off to get more $$$ - then we should focus on others

If we could get Treloar, Kruezer, Yarran + the best suited of Adcock & the departing cats - with only the forced loss of Maric and still keep a pick somewhere inside the top 25 - we are sorted,

I really like Kruezer tho for us - I think he would just change the make up of our side. Only worry is his body, but if he is past that we have the potential to get a bloke with the skill set & mindset to be a top 30 player in the league - but would also just make us so much more flexible. He should be our guy. I love Maric, but this isn't a love story, its about ending 35 years of horror

Shivers man that makes us slower. We need more speed out of the backline I would keep Chaplin before Astbury
That's my opinion from what I've seen of Dave

We would keep both, but Astbury would be the "stay at home backman". If we add Yarran as well i am pretty confident we can transform some current players to be moulded into another option to provide run down back.

All those three names don't really give me confidence. That we will improve significantly that we will be contenders
Yarran from my knowledge is a huge mess outside football
The other two Astbury and Chaplin definitely too slow
These guys take up around $750 k of space we are just throwing good money after bad if they stay on. That coin gets a good young kid called Adam Treloar and a young project player.
We need to improve our list not clog it up with average expensive role players

Last week I put both Griffiths and McBean on the table and nothing has happened to change my opinion of that, both of them have currency and would help us get something that is of a bigger need, so I'd put both of the table and take the offer that gets us the best return, I think Griffiths would be the one that achieves that. One thing that has change though is the desire to get Aish, after the club pretty much ruled him out, but have replaced that with the chase for Redden.

1. Jack Redden and pick 21 for Ben Griffiths & pick 12
Brisbane need a ready to go KPF that can slot into their forward line and help straighten them up. Up until joining us Griffiths was a number 1 forward through his junior career and seems to struggle with us being the 3rd string choice behind Riewoldt and Vickery. At the Lions he could come in as their number 1 option up forward and I think he could thrive in that role. It might take us throwing in something else as well, but this would be the starting point for trade discussions between the 2 clubs if we can get Redden to nominate us instead of a WA team.

2. Picks 21 & 30 for Bennell
Gold Coast are selling and Bennell is damaged goods because of his off field behaviour issues. Yes he has all the talent in the world to be a gun, but he is also a 50-50 chance of becoming a bust and being out of the league this time next year if he stuffs up again. So there has to be a little bit of give from the Suns regarding moving Bennell on.

Outside that I wouldn't be going after anyone else. I've read the comments about us needing a replacement ruckman, but I'd be prepared to give Hampson one last crack at it. 28 next year 201cm & 106kg and in the game he played against his former club this year as the number 1 ruck he had 11 disposals 8 marks & 34 hitouts and gave our midfielders first use of the ball all night, while competing against Warnock and Kreuzer. The following week with Maric back in the side Hampson had 12 disposals 4 marks 24 hitouts as he played more ruck than Maric who played forward with Vickery out. After that he dropped away as his knee injury from early in the season hampered his ability to get around the ground. If fit, I'd give Hampson first ruck and move Maric to the back up role. I know he is in the leadership group but so to is Morris and he played as much VFL as he did AFL this year as better performed options were preferred ahead of him.

With the above changes to the list and a tweak in the 22 I can see us heading into 2016 with a side looking like the following:

B: Grimes Astbury Batchelor
HB: Houli Rance Vlastuin
C: B.Ellis Redden Bennell
HF: Deledio Riewoldt Martin
F: Lennon Vickery Edwards
R: Hampson Cotchin Miles
INT: Conca C.Ellis McIntosh Grigg

Backline:
Astbury comes in to replace Chaplin who like Maric gets relegated to a depth position. After Astburys first knee he took a good 18 months to get back to the form he showed at the start of 2014. At the start of 2016 it would be 18 months again since he did he second knee and he will have had the chance to get a solid summer under his belt. At 24 he is entering the age bracket where most KPP types start to really hit their best years so I'd slot him into FB and move Rance out to CHB where his rebounding can be more effectual. Outside that not much changes in the back 6 that was the 5th lowest points against side in the league this year in the H&A season.

Midfield:
Addition of Redden in the guts and Bennell on the wing automatically gives the side a much stronger look. A starting centre square of Hampson Redden Cotchin and Miles isn't going to lose many clearance battles, especially if Hampson can get first hand on the ball more often than not. With depth options of Conca C.Ellis McIntosh & Grigg coming from the bench we would have the luxury of using Deledio Martin & Edwards forward more often and we'd all agree that those 3 in the forward 50 is more enticing that having Newman Morris & Lloyd as options inside the F50.

Forwards:
As mentioned above a deeper midfield gives us the luxury of using Martin Deledio & Edwards up forward where they can bring that X factor and unpredictability to the F50 that we've lacked in recent years. With Griffiths moving on, I'd be turning to Lennon to fill the role Griffiths played up forward i.e. lead up type who links between the D50 and F50. Against Essendon a few weeks back he showed how good he could be in the role. A long hard summer on the track will be the making of Lennon. I'd be leaving Jack up the ground in the role he played this year where he gets up in the traffic and then turns his man around and works them over. I'd move Vickery deep and have him playing the support ruck role with Hampson. With the reduced interchange next year having that ability to rest a ruckman forward and use the bench for more running depth is going to be important. Vickery wouldn't have to do a heap of ruck work because Hampson IMO thrives on being that first ruck option.

So there you have it, a lot longer than I intended it to be, but after calming down from yesterdays emotions I don't believe we need to go nuts with wholesale changes. What we need to do is be smart and not go chasing the big fish in Treloar or throwing buckets of money at Dangerfield. Smart aggressive recruiting will get the job done. It's what the best sides do and it's what keeps them ticking over at the top of the ladder year after year. They identify what they need/want and go out and get it. About time we did the same.

Do not understand the rush with some posters.

We have many holes to fill and we can't get 10 guns every year.

For example talk of Nicholls and Lycett is fine but they are FA not too far away like Goldstein and others including Redden.

I am happy to settle for Treloar, Bennell and Weller mainly in the next 3 months as a base anyway.

At least that means we are maximising value for Maric and Hampson. Plus let's us develop TV more and gives us time to assess the likes of McBean and others. Who knows, a great Yankie prospect might pop up to. Remember plenty of other ruck backup might be available to like a Martin etc..What would Brisbane want for Martin anyway?

I would:

-Offer up our first rounder for Harley Bennell. He is the only legitimate gun in this trade period that we have a realistic trade for and won't break the salary cap. Pick ~13 and ~500k are in the ball park of what he's worth.

-field a market value deal for Danger and Treloar but accept that they will require overs and will almost certainly go elsewhere. No more than 800k for Danger and no more than 650k for Treloar.

-get Kreuzer and Leuenberger to do a physical and pick one of them up if they are good to go. Lugeyburger prefered due to his extra height 204cm. Kreuzer would be like a highly mobile Maric, but he's still get exposed by the big boys. Leuenberger has shown he can cover a lot of ground and pick up possession (~15 per game) when played as the number 1 ruck. If we can't get either one through FA then wait another year and go hard at a ruck then. Maric is slowly down but he's still an asset. We need a replacement but it isn't so urgent that we just grab any old ruckman. That's how you end up with Hampson.

-stay the **** away from Carlisle. WADA will wreck him.

-offer nothing of value for Yarran. I'd offer up a third rounder at most which would almost certainly be rejected. He isn't worth a first or second rounder. Bog average player and doesn't care. Do not want.

-offer Steve Johnson a 200k one year contract, with option for a second year based on performance.

-delist Gordon, Arnot, Dea and possibly Thomas depending on the number of players we pick up from other clubs.

-keep Griff and Astbury. Both have little trade value. Definitely keep Conca, will be a gun.

Okay, I'll give it a go.

The very first thing I do is offer Ben Lennon a new contract with incentives for bonus money for the next year if he performs well in 2016. Keep him hungry to cement himself in our best 22; because this kid will be something special very soon.

As soon as the boys come back from their short holidays I'll announce Jack Riewoldt as the new captain of the Richmond Football Club, and Trent Cotchin the Vice-Captain along with Lids. This is not done out of haste, this is not a reactionary decision based upon his performance yesterday afternoon; it is the simple fact that Jack Riewoldt literally BLEEDS Yellow & Black. When we are losing, you can see the frustration in his eyes, he loves this club more than any other player, coach, administrator, staff member, and just as much as we do. Jack will be the one to rev us up when our backs are against the wall, something I don't think Trent will ever be able to do as well as Jack. Both are fantastic players in their own right but Jack Riewoldt is the perfect fit for a Richmond Captain if we are to seriously contend.

We go hard for Leunberger (FA), Bennell, Steve Johnson (FA), Carlisle, and Patrick Dangerfield (FA). We almost definitely won't get all 5, but I'll say we'll only be content with 3 at a minimum, with 4 being our primary target. These 5 will almost all certainly be gone at the end of the year, and for the fun of this post I'm gonna say we're able to land all 5 :D.

Steve Johnson: will come dirt cheap and clearly has the desire to play on. Chuck him in a forward pocket for 1-2 years and he will kick his 30-40 no problem. He does not crumble in finals pressure and has been part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the AFL. Experience is a must for us going forward with 4 retirees and just 2 players 30 years of age in 2016.

Bennell: Probably has the most potential of them all. Obviously a bit of a dickhead off-field, but on-field he is absolutely electric and could become anything with the right club culture. Offer him a reasonable deal with incentives based on performance, put him on a leash with Brett Deledio/Trent Cotchin etc. and watch us froth over our gun new recruit. Trade-wise I would offer Gold Coast Ben Griffiths and next years first-round draft pick.

Leunberger: for me a new ruckman is screamingly obvious. Maric does not have long left, the last couple of years have reminded us. With Ivan fast approaching 30 it is time for him to be slowly moved on, and what better way than Luey! With the sub rule gone it will allow us to not become a liability with two rucks in the field, so we can afford to have both Luey/Maric in the same team roating through the ruck and the forward line, Th can also pinch hit if necessary! He won't cost us the Earth and he has proven he can match it with the best in the comp, he can swing forward and kick the odd sausage like the great Mullet Man could. For me Leunberger is a must in 2016. I got him on AFL Live 2 Career Mode and it worked a treat (we won 5 flags in a row on Legendary :p).

Carlisle: Probably the most interesting of the lot. Similar to Maric, Chaplin is getting old and unreliable. He was a great pickup from Port and has been servicable but it is time for us to start phasing him out. Now I'm going to assume Carlisle does not get suspended by WADA and ASADA and is cleared to play, so let's just keep it at that. Carlisle is a fantastic defender who can swing forward, this is a great attribute that a player can have! He gives us flexibility in offence and defence and has proven to be reliable player. He is only being a sooky campaigner because well, Essendon is a shithole :) my trade for Carlisle would be our first-round pick + a sweetener player (I'll say McDonough but there may be better options!)

Patrick Dangerfield: Well this is the guy everyone wants. What a superstar, that's all you have to say. If we could somehow jag him from the jaws of Geelong I will be ecstatic (he seems to love Chris Newman though :D). He will cost the farm but seriously he is the cream on top, he turns us into a contender. I would offer him about $900K over 6 years to get him over, he is so worth it. Gun. If he does not accept the offer than we move on, we can't go into the millions, that's probably what Collingwood will do :D

So from those 5 guys there is only 2 we need to trade for. I would not be mad at all if we could go:

In: Bennell ($550K), Carlisle ($600K), Johnson ($250K), Leunberger ($550K), Dangerfield ($900K)

Out: First Round Picks (2015/2016), Ben Griffiths, Matt McDonough.

With a lot of recent retirements it does free up some more of our salary, but there are some guys that need to part ways with the club...

I would delist:
- Matt Dea
- Matt Arnott
- Nathan Gordon
- Todd Elton

None of these lads will make it to AFL level sadly, as much as I would love them to. But as a football club you have to make the right calls and move the lesser lights on.

We use the remaining spots on our list for the draft, we nail our picks outside the first round for the first time in forever (we invested heavily in the draft in 2014 so drafting is not our number 1 priority at the moment in my opinion).

So here comes the time for our best 22, depth etc. and what we should look like in 2016 as a Footy Club:

1. Patrick Dangerfield
2. Dylan Grimes
3. Brett Deledio
4. Dustin Martin
5. Brandon Ellis
6. Shaun Grigg
7. Harley Bennell
8. Jack Riewoldt
9. Trent Cotchin
10. Shane Edwards
11 Jake Batchelor
12. David Astbury
13. Jake Carlisle
14. Bachar Houli
15. Steve Johnson
16. Shaun Hampson
18. Alex Rance
19. Matt Thomas
20. Ivan Maric
21. Ben Lennon
22. Matthew Leunberger
24. Kamdyn McIntosh
25. Troy Chaplin
26. Anthony Miles
27. Sam Lloyd
28. Taylor Hunt
29. Tyrone Vickery
30. Reece Conca
31. Nick Vlastuin
32. Corey Ellis
34. Liam McBean
37. Connor Menadue
38. Steven Morris
39. Nathan Drummond
40. Dan Butler
42. Reece McKenzie
45. Jayden Short
46. Jason Castagna
47. Ivan Soldo

(Numbers for our new draftees I have NFI about yet obviously) :)

Our best 22 in 2016:

B: Dylan Grimes, Alex Rance, Troy Chaplin
HB: Bachar Houli, Jake Carlisle, Nick Vlastuin
C: Harley Bennell, Patrick Dangerfield, Brandon Ellis
HF: Brett Deledio (VC), Tyrone Vickery, Dustin Martin
F: Shane Edwards, Jack Riewoldt (C), Steve Johnson
Foll: Ivan Maric, Trent Cotchin (VC), Shaun Grigg
Interchange: Ben Lennon, Matthew Leunberger, Kamdyn McIntosh Anthony Miles

Depth: Reece Conca, Sam Lloyd, Taylor Hunt, Kane Lambert, Jake Batchelor, Corey Ellis, Liam McBean, David Astbury, Matt Thomas, Shaun Hampson, Steven Morris.

Pushing Through: Connor Menadue, Nathan Drummond, Jason Castagna, Reece McKenzie, Jayden Short (all from our 2014 draft and rookie drafts.)

Developing: Ivan Soldo and all our new draftees etc. etc. you get the jist :)

Pretty optimistic but we should be extremely aggressive and make something like this happen, so we can contend for a premiership sooner rather than later.

think we have the mix just not picked, my team would be

B: Grimes Astbury Rance
HB: Houli Elton B.Ellis
C: Riewoldt Vlastuin Mcintosh
HF: C.Ellis Deledio Lennon
F: Yarren Vickery Martin
R: Hampson Cotchin Miles
INT: Edwards, Grigg

Backline:
Astbury and Elton take the key posts and Rance is becomes 3rd tall and is freed up to leave his man and compete in the air or run off
Grimes becomes the small defender, with houli and Ellis as the running backs, this us a tall but mobile back line

Mids
Jack and Mcintosh to play wing both can run and both can provide marking targets coming out of the back half which we are severely lacking.
Vlastuin moves to the guts, he may not be a genuine mid but he ips there for grunt and smashing packs

Fwds
We dearly lack a CHF so this goes to lids who can run and mark, Ellis adds some class and Lennon is also strong overhead, this allows great speed, movement and marking power across HF
Eventually would like to see Mcbean at CHF and move lids to a flank

Deep Fwds
Yarren purely for speed I don't really like him but he is the only one available
Vickery for height and Martin for his 1 on 1 ability

Rucks
Bite the bullet and play Hampson, miles and cotchin are locks

Still think we need a CHF and a big bodied mid

Why did you trade Griff and what did you get for him?

I probably look at Adam Kennedy from GWS.
He's surplus to needs at Giants but he has plenty of scalps in the Harvey,Betts etc mould that we are screaming out for.
Would be dirt cheap.
Good user, tough, fast, that's an area I'd be addressing .
Massive and cheap upgrade on Morris.

There is noway we will pick up 2 or 3 guys like everyone is suspecting. We might be lucky to get 1.

My list changes would be:
Senior list
Out:
Newman, Petterd, Foley, Knights (ret)
Dea or Gordon (delisted)
In:
Lambert (rookie promotion)

Rookie list
Out:
Arnott, Thomas

  • Trade Griffiths for a high 2nd rounder/low 3rd rounder (35ish). Use this pick to then get Yarran. We look better when only playing two tall forwards and Vickery/Riewoldt offer much more then Griffiths. Plus McBean in the wings.
  • Pick-up Redden. Not sure how we would get this done. Something along the lines of our first rounder and Astbury for their Redden and a swap of second round picks.
  • Maric can go around for one more year. I would look at utilizing Free Agency next at the end of 2016 to find a replacement for Maric.
  • Would also field offers for Conca to go back to WA. I would take a top 25 pick for him. I'm not sure where he sits in our best 22 unless as an inside mid.
It's apparently a weak draft, so take 3 or 4 kids and then use our remianing picks/rookie picks on mature delisted or teir 2 comp players.

Best 22:
FB: Grimes... Rance..... Batchelor
HB: Vlastuin . Chaplin .. Houli
C: BEllis ........ Cotchin ... Martin
HF: Deledio... Riewoldt .. Lennon
FF: McBean.... Vickery.... Yarran

Ruck: Maric Miles Redden

Int: Lambert McIntosh Grigg C Ellis (/Conca, if not traded)

My delistings are as follows:
Gordon
Dea (retire)
Newman (retire)
Foley (retire)
Knights (retire)
Petterd (retire)

Trade:
1st Round Pick (2015) for Harley Bennell

DFA Additions:
Steve Johnson
Jed Adcock

Resign:
Ben Lennon to 2 year deal with team option for 3rd year.

In the draft take 1 inside Midfielder in the 2nd Round, follow that was a Crumbing small forward and then upgrade Lambert and Castagna.

Next year plan to target a young ruckman such as Lycett.

Best 22:

B: Grimes Rance Vlaustin
HB: Houli Astbury Batchelor
C: Bennell Cotchin B.Ellis
HF: Deledio Griffiths Edwards
F: Johnson Riewoldt Vickery
Foll: Maric Miles Martin

step one get Harley bennel offer him 500k chocco as his mentor give him a role at our indigenous centre
step 2 get yarran as cheap as possible the indigenous boys stick together Harley and yaz can see how professional titch is and work harder. these 2 players make us quicker and they can hit a target.
step 3 talk to leuy and krooz give them medicals offer one a deal leaning towards leuy krooz to similar to maric.
step 4 sign steve Johnson guy has things that no one on our list has, knows how to win, hates to lose and is a campaigner our players are to soft.
step 5 look at getting cey from adelaide

Harley is under contract and sure GC will have to chip in to help meet that
. we can't be taking Harley for big bickies from the outset.

IMO you are underating Griffith's big time. Should get a lot more for him from Freo for example.

I would be using such a trade ultimately fora Bennell but not Yarran

This exactly, I'd probably even prefer this than getting Treloar or Dangerfield
5 upgrades is better than 1-2
