still new to footy - played at FF/CHF this year because of my size (191cm & 105kg), but I'm working to strip 8-10kgs off and hopefully play on the HFF or wing in 2012. Could anyone tell me what sort of 3k time I should aim for in these positions? Also what would be a good beep test result for a wing/flanker?

I have not been able to run for the last week and a half due to my shins absolutely killing me. It's starting to mess with my head seeing as I have already spent so much time/money on trying to get them right. Very depressing and starting to think I may never be able to run without pain. ARGH! DIE SHINS!

orthotics + good shoes + ankle supports.

Maybe see a sports doc? Any ideas?

All I want to do is RUUUN

I'm no podiatrist, but define 'good shoes'... if you are wearing orthotics in them then perhaps they aren't suitable for your foot type... or perhaps they're too old and the soles are compressed?

Also, have you tried running on softer surfaces?

Hard to say... you'd probably want to be comfortably getting through to 10 minimum to play on a wing, but personally I don't think the beep test is a great guide of the endurance and fitness required. Each time I've done it I've eventually bombed out due to pace of turning rather than fitness.

Depends how strong the comp is up there too... or moreso how fit the players are. I moved from the DVFL (now NFL) to the Amatuers in probably a lower quality grade, but found that the players in general were actually fitter than DVFL, so can vary immensely.

I usually run 4 - 4.5 kms my pb for it was 17.50 early last year (blaring The Dropkicks - I'm shipping up to Boston)

Took a year off footy this year, haven't run for 3-4 months now running this 4 - 4.5 km in i'm guessing 23-24 minutes..

gonna be a long road to get back to the fitness i once was

roughly 190cm/ 87 kgs/ 16 years old

looking to play ruck next year :)

Shipping up to Boston is a great tune to listen to! Makes you fly.

About a month ago I was listening to it on a road-run. Had it up so loud though that I didn't hear the car as I was crossing the road. Nearly hit me! Haven't run with music since, as it kills out all the sounds around me.

Although I do hum it occasionally. :p

Thanks - I've started late in life, but wanting to get to as high a level as I possibly can, so aiming to be as fit as possible. I get what you mean about beep test scores - the few times I've done it I bomb out earlier than I think I should because I am quite unco and have a big turning circle!

Yeah mate can relate to this 100% :thumbsu:

Althought it gets you massively pumped it is extremely dangerous. Had some road awareness program at school the other day, showing all these horrific crashes that cars have had with pedestrians...very very put off atm!

Shins felt much better after a week or so off.

I managed to bust my guts and run 15:45!! My PB by 30 seconds.

I am super happy. Getting closer to my sub 15min goal.

I'm a little sore today but shins don't feel too bad at all.

I had the same problem. Mine occurred during intense training for the Melbourne Marathon. I was aiming to do it in 3hrs 30 when the shins played up. I had to stop training and got some orthotics. Ended up doing the marathon in 4hrs 8 mins.
It could be a loading injury. Try and notice your running style and in particular notice which part of your foot makes contact with the ground firstly in your stride. Also get orthotics fitted by a podiatrist and ensure you stretch your calves and shins before and after each run. Let us know how you go.

FWIW I'm also running on the treadmill and trying to go sub 10 mins for a 3km time trial. Currently running 2.33kms in 10 mins. Will build up speeds gradually and try and have a real crack (outdoors) before December.

Did my 3rd 3k run today.

18.24

That's an improvement of 34 seconds from my last run and 1.46 from my first run.

Still working towards that 15 minute barrier. :thumbsu:

Mate thats a ****in awesome effort.

You'll get the even out soon, don't get discouraged.

PM me and i'll shoot you an excel file I use to track my times - helps to keep the motivation up....

Don't mean to brag but ran 21.1km in the Perth City to Surf in 1:24:16. Which works out to a 11:57 for the 3km run but over 7x the distance

Aye mate. I struggled with shin splints due to falling arches for 8 years and tried physio, rest, ice, anti inflammatories, acupuncture etc etc. The day I went out and bought myself a pair of Asics Kayano running shoes is the day I kissed shin splints goodbye. Not saying that is best for you but I am saying to not skimp on the cost of running shoes as they are an investment that you shouldn't deny yourself.

Done my first real run after coming off a bad Medial Ligament Strain which happened late last year.
Ran 3.4km over a time of around 16 minutes. Knee feels fine but have really bad shin splints at the moment. Still happy with my time though. I'm 179cm, 80kg.

KNocked off a 26:04 in 5 k time trial for cricket pre season

compared to 11 min for the 3 k, that last 2 completely changes how you do it!
