I'm real excited for our 2nd year under Dimma. No excuses now, this is our best squad we've ever had. Talent on every line, all entering their prime. I just want to know who is everyone's 5 players they are excited to watch this year?

My 5;

1. Bailey Humphrey

The Bear is at the top of my list, i was super keen on him over Ginbey during his draft year. He has shown a long term commitment to us, with a sporadic role in the Midfield, he has shown he can win the ball. Dimma obviously put alot of pressure on him last year calling him "Our Dusty", so this year i feel he can relax a little bit more and join Sam Flanders as our biggest break out. Bear looks real fit and focused on a big year. I'm hoping he can add some power inside and goals up top. A Personal best of 5 goals against Geelong in Darwin, shows he's got what it takes.

2. Leonardo Lombard

Yes, i love a new toy. Leonardo Lombard, what a name! An absolute terrier, he'll add alot of pace and power in our forward 50. For a rookie to have a similar body profile to our most elite athlete at the club Touk Miller shows he's commitment and dedication to be a professional athlete. With Nick Holman, Ben Long & Tom Berry as our pressure forwards right now, Leo has a good chance to be debuting in Round 0. There could be a nice energy lift with Lombard & Rogers in the same forward line. They may not be sharpshooters but if we lock it in enough, they will get their fair share.

3. Jed Walter

Screen Shot 2025-01-06 at 7.21.16 pm.png

Big Jed, he's scary isn't he? He looks in ripping shape, i can't believe how lucky we are. He was impressing last preseason before he kamikazed the ground and broke his collarbone, which delayed his debut. It is a big ask now to be the 2nd forward already with Jack Lukosius departing, Jed will need to start winning a few more contests. He's career projection may be linear to Nate Caddy from the Bombers, both will get "the keys" from the start. So lets see if Jed can fill a bag, of course Year 2 i'm not expecting much, 30 goals is fine but he looks in ripping shape.

4. Dan Rioli

Screen Shot 2025-01-06 at 7.18.03 pm.png

We finally paid up for a "Big Fish", Rioli is perfect for us. He'll have the license to roam anywhere, think Wil Powell but more fluid. I made a statistical comparsion during the trade period, and in the same period Rioli moved to half back, Powell managed 3 goals off half back while Rioli managed 20. The run and carry is going to add alot, he'll be running past Witts, Rowell, Touk for the hands and lacing our forwards out. I'd be pretty happy for Rioli to be our main guy off half back while Uwland, Powell & Noble cover him as they are better defensively. His MCL injury looks fine on instagram, he should be ready to go when they return.

5. Matthew Rowell/Noah Anderson

My boy's, both A Grade Midfielders. I think it's truly time for both these boys to get an All Australian jacket. Our trajectory is up, we should be playing finals, these two polled in every win we got last year, and most of them were at home. Sprinkle in a few more wins and these guys should be getting some individual accolades. Rowelly looks super hungry, his signature will definately be a big talking point. We need to lock him down asap. Ando looks like 1 more preseason away from truly exploding again, averaging 30 touches a game he may need a forward rotation with Humphrey to give him that extra X factor ceiling. Anderson snagged 13 last year, if he can get to 20-24 a game. He'll be the best player in the game.

Great write up. If Anderson snags 24 goals a game he'll be the best player of all time

I think our finals hopes are on the shoulders of Rowell, Anderson, Miller, ballard, King, Flanders, Powell, Collins, rioli etc but as far as excitement levels you can't go past the local young guns.
1 walter
2 Graham

4 Rogers
5 Lombard

Could go in any order but they all have given us reason to be excited and whilst the mature aged group hold the key to finals success now these guys will provide the sustained success we are all hoping for. Keen for some footy to start to see improvements from all players.

Let’s add Uwland to your magnificent five🙂

Mine aren’t hype train players necessarily, but more just questions about some young players who could define our year and club that I rate for different reasons.

I left out first and second year players, as I wanted to focus on players I have genuine expectations for who are in the right age bracket to give me hope and lead the way.

1. Flanders: Played in all zones, but seems best suited as a mid-forward. Isn’t afraid to work hard and can find the odd goal too. Can he lock down this role and help support a midfield that looked a bit lost at times?

2. Mac: We know Mac is an excitement machine. This kid can play in every zone, and we’ve seen him as defender, with some bursts in the ruck and a trial as a forward late in the season. Can he live up to his contract hype and continue to be that X-factor, marketable player that we desperately need?

3. Powell: With some proper support from our new HB recruits, we are now stacked in a position where we previously had little quality depth. Will Will have to find a new role or rotate up the ground more, or is there still permanent space for him in the backline as an intercepting rebounder with a penetrating and aggressive kick?

4. Rosas: He knows how to find pockets of space and has some speed and good goal sense, and we desperately need some more forward craft and scoreboard pressure (Long and Ainsworth were our best forwards last year). Isn’t always in favour with the coaching team and selectors because of this. So, can he put his inconsistency and stupid actions aside and deliver us some goals and genuine excitement up forward, or will the newest toys overtake him completely?

5. King: He had a consistent season last year (besides that month of absolute yips) and had a nice goal tally by the end. I don’t think he will be a contested marking beast, but he is a very mobile and opportunistic tall forward. Can he go one step further as the only real experienced target we have up forward and start taking games over, rather than contributing nicely?

Honourable mentions:
Humphrey, Ballard. Both had inconsistent years and hopefully they can start afresh. Very valuable players to us and I think all fans want to see them firing in 2025.

Wildcard: Joel Jeffrey. A player with a good kick and a questionable attitude at times, he was trialled in the halfback line to some success, but couldn’t lock it down. But with Luko out the door, could Joel take on a similar role? It feels like his time in the sun is all but done with the impending emergence of Read, Walter, Lombard and Rogers up forward, as well as the recruitment of Rioli and Noble down back. Spots are tight for a medium utility x-factor player already on the fringe…

1. Graham - Has potential to be one of our best players. Some of the stuff he did last season was crazy. Tough as, has the size, speed and skills.

2. Mac - Probably should be one, just so exciting and you never know whats going to happen when he gets the pill. Has the contract now and even more confidence. Expecting a big year.

3. Clohesy - We ran him into the ground out on the Wing last year. Started the season so well and faded a bit as it went on. Some of his goals early in the season were awesome. Love to see him snag a few more.

4. Ben Long - Great season last year meant to be a small fwd but basically played as a CHF found himself in the spots where youd expect Walter / King to be in... Can he have the same impact with the new look fwd line with Read, Walter, Himmelberg whatever the setup is.

5. Humphrey - I think he is still going to struggle to stamp himself into games and get enough footy to be damaging. Hope he can breakout in a big way.

Some nice posts here.

Not sure why but no off-season hype for me. The past taught me a lesson.

IMO, we are far from ideal age and experience profile. My best 23 (no Read) is 89 games and 24 years and 6 months. For illustration, 2024 finalists were 2 years older and had 50 more games experience.

Still a lot of babies, mostly potential or hoping to start delivering consistently - Uwland, Graham, Walter, Read, Rogers, Lombard, Clohesy, Andrew, Moyle, Humphrey.

In reality, it could be still 1-2 more years we start hitting prime. But then of course, Witts could be gone, Collins, Miller could be past of it. Rowell (and possibly others) could leave if we don't make finals. 14-15 teams are targeting finals, so many talented line-ups. It's a fine balance.

It's players mentioned by some here to take us to promise land next year - Flanders, Ballard, Powell, King, Anderson, Rowell, Ainsworth, Collins, Rioli (not great preseason). Hopefully some kids will join them but probably not all of them.

I do have some doubts about Dimma's coaching too. His stubbornness to use tag, consistently playing Rowell inside.

My 5 to watch. If they go well it will have serious impact.

Rowell. If he is not banged up he is electric.

Anderson. Still needs to work on upper body, contest.

King. Go get Coleman medal.

Powell. Stay healthy. Wing for me.

Miller. No injuries, full preseason please.
