I played the new 9 holes they currently have open at Sandringham a week or so ago. The rest of the course will be open by the end of the year, including the new clubhouse.

The course has been redisgned by Ogilvy's company, with a new driving range and the VGA's and VIS Golf headquarters will be going in there.

With a view for the range and the VIS facilities to be be used for Royal Melbourne tournaments and major pennant and amateur events etc.

The new bunkering is sensational, the 3 of the back 9 were always originally RMGC holes in it's original layout from the 1920's and it will only be a Par 70, as they've got ridden of all the Par 5's to stretch out the rest of the layout. But what they've done with it is great.

Given it sits on some of the most recognisible golf soil on the planet, coupled and the new bunkering which actually showcases it, it's legitimately going to resemble a mini public version of RMGC & Kingston Heath when done.

I dare say it's going to be one of, if not the most popular Metro public course by next year.
Sounds awesome! Is the range there open?

Edit: probably not because of covid, but i mean has it been built and is it ready to go?

They just demolished the old club house, they are starting prep to pour the slabs.

Driving range to be open in 6 months.

No, but I've played there quite a bit.

What was your query?
Was thinking of looking at membership in September after lockdown or march 2021 as a 3 month trial. Its the closest private course to my house.

Its always rated well in Golf Digest Top 100, so mainly interested in peoples views of the facilities, friendliness of the people, is it relaxed environment or strict, how easy is it to get a membership, etc.
Also if its playable for a 30 handicapper?

It's a great course and one of the more underrated ones throughout the area.

I can't speak for the membership group etc, but it's always been fairly cost effective given it's always been fighting with Kingswood (RIP), Southern, Woodlands, Keysborough, Commonwealth, Huntingdale, Metro etc for members.

Like most of the top 100 courses littered in the area, it's not easy. One of the hardest games I've ever played was probably on that course in 80kph winds.

Some snobs generally steer clear of it because it abuts the Clayton tip, so on hot days you can get a bit of a ripe smell at times. It shits all over Commonwealth as a comparison in my opinion.

I rate it highly and have considered joining it myself at times....

It's very playable for a higher handicapper. You'll find a few traps but shouldn't lose too many from the tees. The playing corridors are fairly wide. Nice course and very underrated.

Whether it's value probably depends on your age group etc. It's fair bit cheaper when you're Under 40 but at $4300 for full membership + $400 mandatory levy it's not cheap given somewhere like Keysborough is $3200 with no levy or Kew which is similar.

The club is flat broke (owe many millions still on their clubhouse on a fixed rate and can't re-negotiate) and is leaking members like a sieve.

What are they stinging you for a 3 month trial?

i like to think any club is playable for a 30 hcer. You gotta start somewhere!

If you can play elsewhere away from the formerly olfactory infringing tip, is that being a snob?

Haven't actually contacted them, have just seen they run memberships on the year July-June, pro rata. So I was thinking of either joining in September - July, or wait until March and do my own 3 month trial, haven't actually checked this with the club. I'm under 34, so they have discounted pricing. I think I worked out it would cost roughly $50 a week averaged out + $500 joining fee.

Are these things negotiable?

Everything worth trying to negotiate
It's free to ask 😄

I guess it depends on the quality of the golfers but somewhere between 3 and 3.5 hours.
The most annoying part is when a 2 ball with carts are holding people up
Quality has zero.impact on round time.
I have a mate who'll shoot 100'115 for 18.
As a 2 we can get around in 2hrs 40 if no hold ups.
We did Tatura in 2hrs 15

exactly.

if its social, it should move faster because you can just drop a ball somewhere if you lose your original ball.

for mine, observations from the national, we move quickly there by and large. players know how to move between shots. play ready golf, dont need all 4 players to look for a ball. Or if you are gonna help and are near, hit your ball first then help. Perpetual motion.

I guess its more on the type, long and wayward are probably slower as they are normally searching over a wider area. With horter hitters generally it is much easier to spot the ball.
2 hrs 15 for 2 is impressive. I've only done that once playing by myself but generally i'm in the 2 hr 30 or 40 range.
