White is, or at least was, a very good ruckman. However, the introduction of the second circle at ruck contests killed him as it limited his ability to leap over the top of his opponents. We have 4 very good young ruckmen, why would we want an old one?

Yze is at least 2 years past his best and has struggled to get a game this year in the wooden spoon team. He really needs to seriously consider retirement, as I can't see any clubs being interested in picking him up again via the draft.

Does anyone think that Jeff White will end up back at his original club as backup for Sandilands? ;)

might be a straight swap for Warnock plus a Dees draft pick
The word is that White is headed to Carlton. Makes sense - Cloke is a handy player but he's useless as a ruckman. Kruezer will be a very good ruckman, but he needs a more experienced ruck to teach him and give him time to develop.

I see the reasoning but they would be stupid imo. If i were a Carlton supporter I'd rather Hampson and Kruezer learn on the job than give White any time.

Just get the ruck coach to teach them, don't get an undersized old bloke whose best is long gone...

but hey it is Carlton we are talking about.

maybe White is headed there as the new ruck coach?

Are Adem Yze and Jeff White worth crows having a look at them. THOUGHTS

You might as well ask about Damien Peverill, Jason Johnson, Courtney Johns or any of the dozen other guys past their "use by dates"

Yze not a chance in hell... White is interesting he has been playing well in the VFl and when put in the AFL has done his job, the crows have this year lost Rhett as a mature ruckman, although he didn't play I'm sure he helped the young guys out a fair bit.... Moran isn't the answer to our rucking issues he's a handy fill in player in ruck but thats it, Tippett they don't want to play ruck and Griff can't see out a season, you could do worse than pick him up in the PSD....

Not sure why the Blues would take him he doesn't fit into Ratten's youth structure

Yze? Gotta be kidding. White? We’ve got no chance, Sydney have probably already offered him a four year deal…

We wouldn’t and shouldn’t pick either of these guys up.

The answer is...

Yep spot on. Especially the bolded part. I totally understand & for the most part agree with the introduction of that circle, but it ruined high leaping, shorter ruckmen like White and it created the need for every team to recruit 7'9 freaks of nature who've never seen the game, on the off chance they could work in the ruck.

Interesting assessment. Yes, the second circle curtailed the effectiveness of the smaller leaping ruckman but I wouldn’t have thought that it’s forced teams to recruit ruckmen differently to what was already the norm. Anybody over 200cm is, was, and will be a bit of a monster in terms of AFL players for a while to come yet.

The big shift in the recruitment (and development as much as anything else) of ruckmen is that recruiters now look for a decent engine and a bit of toe. Hence, the number of basketballers we’re now seeing in the AFL. Skills are a bonus.

How could we do worse? By picking a 20 year old or younger that may give us 10 years??
