Opinion So who is our next Wayne Carey? The guy that is a dominant force in the competition that leads us to our next Flag?

God forbid anyone respond about what they have seen live.

My point is they are single moments. I could give you three minutes of Aaron Mullett highlights and we'd think he was a superstar.

We’d be lucky to see another Carey at all, let alone at North.

Zondor this hypothetical is dumb “Now if we had kept JHF, Finished last in 2023 and snared Reid plus somehow retained Thomas I'd be a lot more bullish about our midfield at a minimum. For the pain that we have suffered have we maximised our return with the draft hands we have been afforded? :stern look”

You asking if they both weren’t dickheads.
Ha. Wayne Carey was also a Wild Child. Some would call him a dickhead. :stern look

I was about to write the same

But I won’t

There are two or three players at Carey level, including him.

I’m assuming that you’re suggesting that Sheezel has the potential to get to that Wayne Carey style dominant player of the competition. Fair to say he ain’t there yet. Who are the others? :stern look

He was wild, but he was also an excellent captain, and a I doubt many would call him a dickhead to his face.

Not only did he dominate games, he knew what every player on the ground was going through, “if they were being given a hard time by their opponent he’d find his way over to where they were playing and help out his teammates and give his opposition something to think about” That’s what David king said about him and why he was such a great captain and player. Not only did he dominate games himself, he made everyone else better.

Garry Ablett snr was a fantastic player, amazing, but he didn’t have that.

Yeah he ****ed up off field, no doubt, but if you’re waiting for the next Carey, you might need to be immortal.

I think he was talking historically.

Carey
LMatthews
Snr
Lockett

4 then Daylight.

The answer to your question is nobody. Nobody. We can still win 3 flags though, we just need to grow some big balls. Quickly.

Fair enough.

With RHJr I watched thee games in five weeks and in each game he got better and chased harder. He struggled to stick a tackle tho. This year at training he looked a little bigger but he chased his arse off and made some big tackles.

Some basic errors too.

But he's fast and he chases for half the field if he has to.

Reid has some very nice highlights but went missing for slot of the games I watched on tv and was shocking in Hobart.

The reality is most of our list is under 24 and apart from Powell have played less than 50 games. All we've got to go on is glimpses.

The whole thread

There was one Tony Lockett as the song went and there’s only one Wayne Carey if they bothered to sing that Greg Champions
A Dustin Martin if you like. C’mon Gas. Do we have any “Generational Players” currently on our list that will be dominant players in the competition and lead us to our next Flag? :stern look

Sheezel at least.

But...

Collingwood, Brisbane, Geelong (their generational players were cooked in 2022), Melbourne, West Coast, Footscray and Hawthorn in 2014/15 ...

None had "generational" players like Martin. They had talented sides and good systems with plenty of hard working role players as well.

With all our early draft selections in recent years surely we have enough "rounds in the chamber" so to speak. Surely one or more will rise to bring us back the the glory days. I suspect it maybe someone we're not really banking on. Look at Xerri - never saw that coming.

We won’t ever have a Carey again. He was something totally out of the box.
But it’s never one player that does it, it’s the overall quality plus the system and the culture. The last player to dominate in that way was Dusty, and he wasn’t even captain. Before that, who? Buddy, no. GAJ, totally different style. Judd? Part of a quality crew.
We are loaded with top tier and B+ talent. If we get the development, system and culture right, and a pinch of luck, the cattle is good enough.

Sheezel.

The rest would be lucky to get near Schwass.

Respectfully Colby will never go near Schwass unless he adds 10 metres on his kicks, starts taking big marks and learns how to iron blokes out.

Schwass was a dual B&F in a team with Carey, McKernan, Archer and Stevens. Next level.

Also a great Brownlow poller.

I think he can match him or even surpass in terms of finding the ball. Some of Schwass' bumps would be suspensions today. Otherwise yes.

Removing the bumps, Schwass was a much more complete player than McKercher will ever be imo.

McKercher is a little train that chugs along - gets and goes, gets and goes. Run in straight lines, medium or short kick to a target. Nothing to sneeze at.

Schwass could switch inside to outsude and back, stop, pivot and size up situations quickly then run a jagged pattern and kick to a long target. Just a fantastic complete player in skill set.

Wells at times was the closest we've had since in a footballing sense (ie without considering the brutality aspect).

If George Wardlaw can get (and stay) fit he will be insanely good in 3 years time.

Schwass was a star no doubt and was good from the get-go but geez McKercher's first year was one for the ages.

I just wonder what the hype would be like if he played with one of the Big 4.

If we're purely talking projections, McKercher will be elite and I think comparisons are pretty meaningless after that.

I think the greatness of Carey was he was a long way above the level those teammates you mentioned.

Barassi had many more champions at his disposal than Pagan, but you could throw a blanket over Barassi's.

Having watched all of the Pagan years - the player you left out was Mick Martyn. As good as the others were, Martyn was second picked each week.

On B&F's, no disrespect to the others, Carey should have won at least 6 of them.

Funnily enough, Comben has plenty of Carey like attributes. He has too many holes in his game of course, but his ability to impose himself onto a marking contest is something you can't teach. He's nice size too. If he could stay on the part, work on his goal kicking (yes, I believe he has to play forward) I reckon he could be something special (c)
