The AFL is asking for compensation cover if a football player suffers a serious injury after the cricket is played during the Round 3 Adelaide v North Melbourne game at the venue.

The league also wants to be remunerated in case the logistical challenge of transforming the ground back to purpose for football can’t be achieved in time which could see Crows home game either postponed or shifted.

“The South Australian government has already shown an awful lot of support to both footy clubs locally, particularly the Adelaide Football Club which has done very well from the support we have provided them to get through the issues at Thebarton (Oval), we have backed them all the way.
It is understood the request is not for an outright fee, but instead cover, to allow the Shield final to be played at Adelaide Oval.

South Australia won hosting rights for the Shield final and the South Australian Cricket Association is hoping to hold it at Adelaide Oval in between Port Adelaide’s clash against Richmond next Saturday and then the Crows and Kangaroos the following Sunday.

To do this the Oval would need to be transformed from footy to cricket on the Sunday after the Power game, the Shield final would run from Monday to Friday and then curators would have a day to turn it back to a footy venue before the Crows game.

But while it is understood the Crows remain happy for this to happen, if a solution can be found, there are concerns around the potential exposure faced from the current plan.

The main one is player safety, with the concern around legal liability if a player suffers a serious injury from the Adelaide Oval surface being different to what it has been for 10 years because of the rapid change.

Crows premiership ruckman Shaun Rehn sued the AFL, SANFL and the club in the early 2000s seeking damages for loss of income as a result of an injury sustained in a 1999 pre-season match at Football Park.

The former Crows and Hawthorn ruckman required a knee reconstruction after slipping on an artificial disc, used to help umpires bounce the ball.

On top of that there is also concerns that if the Shield final goes all five days and then it rains on the Saturday the Adelaide Oval ground staff would not be able to change the venue back to one suitable for AFL games.

Theyve got the dates of the Shield final wrong.

Classic.

My next potentially silly question is: is it the AFL or the Crows asking for money from the SA government?

I’ve seen both reported, but seems unclear.

Mali tried to make it sound like it was the Crows initially apparently.

I think we can assume they are one of the same.

What's not clear to me is if we have actually asked for money or is it just compensation if something goes wrong.

To be fair I wouldn't blame us / AFL if we did ask for a small amount of money for doing the SACA a favour but obviously if we want access in Cricket season the same would apply to us.

From his interview you couldn’t take it as anyone but the crows.
Made it sound like we’re asking for actually money up front rather than agreeing to something if it happens.

Haven't seen the interview only what's been reported by Simeon Thomas-Wilson, seems the AFL came out probably at Adelaide's request to put it straight though Adelaide may have approached the AFL in the 1st place with their concerns re the surface?

Update

The AFL tried to get the entire year’s fees relating to the Footy Express waived in exchange for the Sheffield Shield final to be played at Adelaide Oval.
While AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon confirmed the league was still in discussions with the South Australian Government around the risk mitigation of hosting the Shield final at Adelaide Oval, it can be revealed that the league was seeking to waive all the fees for the free public transport to every home game for fans who have a ticket.

It is understood that waiving this for the entire year would cost the State Government up to several million of dollars and the request was a precursor to SA premier Peter Malinauskas’ revelations of requests for compensation from the AFL as “a little bit galling” on radio on Wednesday.

His interview was on AA but I heard a fair portion through SEN.
He made it sound like it was adelaide who wanted money.
What’s coming out it seems like the afl has asked for millions.

Others can have a crack at the rest... perhaps the last bit is your thoughts on ROB.

Ah yes, I love the idea of having to travel interstate three weeks in a row, during the most important part of the home and away season, to help relive the childhood memories of our premier.
Where are you going?
