Why does the alleged assailant need to be protected ?

Do you have no concept of how courts work ? He’s not found guilty yet and is presumed innocent.

So what

Most people get named when charges are laid and when they attend crt. Happens all the time.
There is a public daily list for starters.
SOs are pretty rare.

A basic understanding of the jury system might be looked into. It's not the media's role or the public to speculate before a trial and thus potentially influence any decision by a jury.
Weird how the rest of the western world seems to be able to handle sub judice ok without throwing gag orders on everything.

But no, it must be everyone except the Victorian judges who are wrong.

Yeah, but the rest of the world doesn't work in the same environment as the Victorian judges do.

They can both be correct with their behaviours. I mean, how do you know that other judges wouldn't behave exactly the same way as Victorian ones do if they were ruling on cases in Victoria.

Crime isn't unique to Victoria, and yet...

I suspect its because there is a cultural distain towards open justice in Victoria and very little political commitment to enforcing a higher bar for when suppression orders should apply and the lengths judges should go to explain why they're making them.

Not in Victoria for sexual assault related charges

All cases are subject to SO for both perpetrators and victims

A lot of supression orders are about making sure there is a fair trial.

Cases can be dismissed if jury members are privy to sensitive or inadmissible evidence. It can grounds for a mistrial.

This provides a decent summary for those interested:

I’ve got no idea about the inconsistencies of our legal system hence the question.

So given there is a suppression order in place it’s a forgone conclusion that this will go to trial ?.

No they're not. On average there's nearly two handed out in Victoria every single day. Its outta control.

Well 2 out thousands per day is statistically rare but sure I get the point. Not that rare.
