Review Round 1 v Geelong

Bruce is a massive highlight.

Our players are a lot better than what they showed today, and I expect better results in the next few weeks.

Outside of that waste of ****ing time watching that game.

  • Not convinced JL can fire up the team
  • WTF is the point of playing Reidy
  • So happy to see we've continued our strategy of just bombing it into forward 50 every time instead of hitting up leads
  • Why make Chappy sub
  • Umps still didn't have to ream us like that
  • Too many soft passengers

Of all the things I didn't like about that, and there was a lot - I really didn't like that time Ryan helped Dangerfield get up off the ground.
Didnt see that personally but if that happened, there is too much niceness about this club. Longmuir strikes me as too 'cuddly' with his players and its sorted of reflected in his players.

I want the grunt of the players of yesterday, the real agro in-your-face players. eg Crowleys, Ballantynes- players that get under the skin of oppo teams.

As good as Murphy Reid’s moment was today - and it was brilliant, he will be a star - do not let it distract you from the fact that we were utterly embarrassing.

We played a good 10 minutes in that game, the other 70 we were disgusting. It was always going to be tough but why were we uncompetitive in the first game of the season? Why did it take us until we were 60 points down to start playing like an actual professional team? Why did it take an 18 year old kicking a few goals to get the team going? These are questions that need to be answered.

Everything that I’ve been critical of in the past 5 years was on display again today. Slow starts, poor skills, low intensity and an inability to deal with pressure, an over-usage of the handball which invites said pressure, poor 1-on-1 defending, patches where our midfield just get dominated, structure all over the place (why the f was Sharp playing full-back) etc etc etc.

But the worst bit was we actually gave ourselves a chance to win the game at 3 quarter time, or at least give it a good shake, and then for some inexplicable reason we went back to the slow sh*t. When Reidy held the ball up at half-back early in the quarter, then proceeded to kick it lace out to Stewart I knew the game was over. And then we gave up 10 goals and lost by 80.

I don’t like writing players off but Reidy, Banfield and Worner are so obviously not AFL quality and I expect all three to be delisted at the end of the year. The decision to play the latter over Chapman or Aish is just another in the long list of utterly bizarre JL decisions that make me question why he is our coach and why so many of our fans defend him - I’ve lost all faith in him and it’s Round 1.

Brayshaw and Reid the only ones who can hold their heads high today.

I keep thinking about this but all summer and I repeat all summer, everyone was talking about the Indigenous game. Stupid concept that distracts from what the focus of 2025 opening round. The players were so off in that 1st half it made you question if their minds were on the job.

I do respect the first custodians of the land. But why don't the other 17 teams in the comp play them? Freo looked totally flat in that first half. Maybe its the travel down to Geelong? Maybe it was the heat in an unfamiliar surrounding? Not sure how many of these boys would have played more than say 2+ games down there in their career.

JL has to take some responsibility with Reidy selected, Chappy the sub, and Serong off for the majority of the second quarter.
With the exception of Reid, a lot of the young guys (like Draper and Noddy) had shockers.

We should improve from here with Bolton, young coming back.

Ah yes, a pre season game in February is the reason we lost by 80 points.

Kicks: Geelong 247 Freo 183
Handballs: Geelong 113 Freo 178

The handball game will always be susceptible to pressure, which is what happened today. I don’t think that style can win Finals and Premierships. The only time we looked any good was in the 3rd when we just forced the ball forward at all costs. Longmuir was comprehensively outcoached by Scott.

He has underachieved with this squad. He is the coach most under pressure I feel this year in the AFL . Nicks at Adelaide 2nd most under pressure but I do feel Adelaide have a bit more going for them this season.

Doesn't help that we love to handball backwards and to the side. Other teams that get really goot handball going always look for the forward option and get the overlap going. I can't count the amount of times we handball backwards to someone under pressure.
