In 1987, Richmond were near death. The board considered moves to Adelaide, Tasmania, & other relocations/mergers, & even removing the membership nature of the club.
Board members Finley & Robertson were Bond men. There were 16 legal cases against the club & 2 wind-up orders, the club only survived due to a $250,000 contribution from Alan Bond.

Yes, Richmond made Bond President in '86 (not elected), & he even tried to have Richmond play 11 games a year in Brisbane without any vote by the Board, or the members
In no small measure due to Bond's shenanigans further destabilising Richmond, they finished last in '87, behind the Brisbane Bears - only their second spoon in 70 years - & nailed down the most embarrassing statement of all time.
