Because North’s list management plan was to sort their midfield first and then build out from there. Will Phillips was the best pure midfielder in the draft by a street, so if you put 2 and 2 together, then there’s your answer. Obviously, inside midfielders usually take a bit more time to truly develop and if you add on the fact that he didn’t play any footy in his draft year, then he hasn’t exactly had a terrible start to his career. 16 games in his first year is pretty handy and if you compare it to the rest of the draftees in a similar position to him, then I’m confused by your trolling.

It's absolutely baffling, but he was regarded as 'the safe midfield' bet at that draft.

Looked super vanilla to me, albeit with a good turn of speed.

There was real talk we'd pick him, and I was a little terrified at the prospect.

He was widely regarded, by those who know a lot more than us, as the best pure mid in that draft by quite a long way and so, based on North’s list management plan, it was a pretty easy decision.

You’re carrying on like he’s been in the system for a while and he’s on his last chance. He will be a good AFL footy player for a long time.

North wanted Logan McDonald but were spooked by the go home factor. Their recruiter was also keen on Hollands but was over ruled by the board due to the ACL.

How exciting to see the new guys debut so quickly.
Its been a tough 12 months after the handover so lets hope we get the W and the boys start to gel and enjoy their footy.
Melbourne look to have so much belief last night.
Hopefully our forwards and mids take something from the game.
