Coronavirus/COVID-19

I had my first RAT today. The village manager went down to our local pharmacy to get me my free five pack. I wasn't feeling too well this morning and since I went to Royal Melborne and my kidney doctor last week I thought it wise to be careful. After all of this tmie I wouldn't want to get Covid now. Test was negative.

That's good Chicago. Not wanting to worry you, but if you get worse ask for a proper test because I got it 2 weeks ago and I thought I had a cold because of a negative RAT. Long story short, symptoms started on Wed and on Sun I went for a covid testing station test and was found to be positive. Lucky I hadn't been out and about too much.

Thanks. I'm feeling a bit better. It might just be my sinuses with this weather. I was supposed to get a follow up blood test for my kidney doctor today but will go tomorrow if I'm feeling up to it. I have an appt for my flu shot next week.

Look after yourself - got to work up to the lucky meal Sat arvo!

Over 1,000 people died of Covid in the last month….
Did anyone know that? Kind of got lost in the focus on other government incompetence and Russian ethnic genocide.

Additional FYI.
Finally getting my bags after waiting a week from an Airline based in KL. Please note that the delayed baggage claim is tiny compared to the amount of compensation that airline owes us. Lesson: don’t fly with them, no matter how cheap.

Is that AirAsia? Used them once to get to Bali via KL and Singapore. Horrible airline. Owned by Indonesian.

I had heard that more people in Australia have died of covid since 1st January 2022 than all of 2020 and 2021 combined so it’s not a complete surprise.

An increase in deaths was always likely to be the cost of getting back to “normal”. There would never be a right time for it, but it had to happen sooner or later. I’m just glad we were able to get a lot of the population vaccinated before it did happen. Let’s hope it’s not going to get any worse over the coming winter.

Unfortunately as you southerners retreat inside for your winter, the cases and deaths will go up.

Alternatively you could join us up here….

"Queensland has been reporting, on average, 7,000 to 8,000 cases a day," Professor Toole said.
"If Queensland was a country, it would rank number 15 in the world.
"Australia as a country ranks number five in the world for new cases.

We now have more deaths per capita than the USA. (Source: ABC TV - Casey Briggs)

But it's OK, business is booming again.

I’m ok…which is the main thing.

What sort of time scale was he/she referring to? Using freely available information, I don't think it looks right.

Total deaths in Australia: 7,242
Total deaths in the USA: 993,615

Deaths in last 28 days in Australia: 871
Deaths in last 28 days in USA: 11,808

(Source: COVID-19 Map - Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center)

Population in Australia: 25,881,386 (May 1 estimate, via ABS)
Population in USA: 332,637,346 (April 30 estimate, via census.gov)

Total deaths in Australia (relative to population): 1 in 3,574
Total deaths in USA (relative to population): 1 in 335

Deaths in last 28 days in Australia (relative to population): 1 in 29,715
Deaths in last 28 days in USA (relative to population): 1 in 28,171

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if the death rate in Australia does exceed that in the USA at some point. Sooner or later you start to run out of vulnerable people to kill, and they killed a lot of theirs early on; whereas we have done a relatively good job of protecting ours (via vaccination and, until recently, the generally low rate of disease in the community).

I was just reporting what Briggs said on TV so unfortunately it's hard to give an ABC source you can link straight back to. I haven't been scrutinising him too closely but I've found him to be fairly responsible with stats and he wasn't just saying it for the headline - it was almost said in passing IIRC.

It definitely wouldn't have been cumulative over the course of the whole epidemic. USA would be way ahead in that. Briggs was talking in the context of what's been happening over the past few weeks, or maybe a month or two.

As Arkangel showed in his stats Australia is now very close to the USA in deaths per capita (last 28 days) so it wouldn't take much variation to reverse their standings.

The point is not so much about who is just in front of the other but that we have significant death rates from Covid (even if they are mostly in the over 70 age group) and those rates now seem comparable with many other industrialised nations. That was not the case last year or in 2020.

From the same source (Johns Hopkins via Worldometer) here are the 50 countries with the highest reported Covid death rate (per million population) in the last 7 days. It shows Australia is still lower than NZ, Canada and a lot of European countries but higher than the USA (double in fact), Spain, Portugal, etc. Of course we need to remember that seven day periods are going to have high variability from one week to the next. Last week Australia and USA would have been about the same (8.14 to 7.75).

It's sobering to think that one person in 330 in the USA has died of Covid since the pandemic began.

It's worth mentioning that, if you want to compare COVID stats for a Northern Hemisphere country with a Southern Hemisphere country in the same time period, it would be irresponsible/dishonest to do so without controlling for seasonality. Especially if the comparison is supposed to indicate the effects of different public policy or behaviour in dealing with the virus.

Cheers,

Can't find the reference but yesterday ? I heard / read Matthew Guy say the Libs would remove all Covid restrictions??? Sounds crazy. Also reckons he will halve hospital waiting lists ....

There is a large outbreak of influenza A at my sons school. Over 50% of students have missed either Friday or today. Most teachers & office staff effected too. There is lots of covid around here too but it is no where near as widespread as this influenza outbreak.
Parents asking other parents for RATs…. But none have been positive so far (that I know of). A waste of RATs if you ask me.
