Laverde could Captain. At this stage I'd probably prefer him to any of those touted as next in line.

Another one would be Jake Kelly. I don't know much about him before he came to Essendon, but he seems very level headed and has a great attitude. I think they should be looking at these types of guys as leaders.

There is an opponent BZT can beat that Laverde can't?

Laverde ended up being troubled by Gunston, Hawthorn's best forward, more than Kosi and Callow who he also played on.

No one looks at the McCartin boys as not key defenders and they are more Laverde than BZT.

Are we really sitting here and saying Taberner would have kicked one less goal on BZT or Reid than he did on Laverde? That ignores the impact of system breakdown as much as it ignores the reality that BZT barely halves a 50/50 1v1.

Well considering Lav's been beaten reasonably comfortably by multiple key forwards and BZT's done a solid job most weeks...

You don't like Zerk. Don't let facts get in the way of a good story though.

The facts?

So I guess BZT was going to just run past Taberner on those leads, was he?

How many worse than 50/50s does BZT halve let alone win? The answer is virtually none.

As a 5th year player on the list, 6th year by age, he doesn't play on the opponents' best.

I'm not interested in his speciality getting a fist to the ball when the kick goes over the forward's head or to the wrong side.

Why do you think he gets dropped at every opportunity?

Facts: Laverde's best game, the one on the weekend in case you missed it, was a game where he spent the majority of the time on Gunston, a medium forward.
Facts: Laverde has been beaten by several key forwards, due to the fact that he's undersized.
Facts: BZT has played on (for the majority of the game) Himmelberg (2 goals), Lobb (0 goals), Cameron (1 goal from a Kelly FK) and Koschitzke (2 goals, 1 from a Reid FK) and kept them reasonably quiet. For the record, Himmelberg kicked 4 the week before and 4 the week after, Lobb 3 the week after and Kosi 3 last week. So it isn't as if he was playing on forwards out of form.

You don't like Zerk. But when we get down to it, you're trying to present an argument that Zerk wouldn't have done any better on someone who took ahold of Laverde just because of that.

Never change, eth-dog.

The "fact" which proves your point is not the number of goals conceded or your opinions (which are fine as long as you recognise your opinions are not facts). It is the number of 1v1 contests won and lost and the circumstances in which those contests were won and lost.

Even that can become a subjective analysis.

We hear from coaches all the time that defenders are not punished for goals conceded. This is particularly so where, as was the case against Freo, a side resembles witches hats.

Even historically, champion full backs were conceding huge numbers of goals per week, particularly by the time the 90s came around.

Whether it's because the coaches are as critical of BZT's 1v1 work as I am or because they dont see the potential there compared to the competition, a fact is that he is continually dropped from the side (as he should be).

I know it's the case because next to his name in the team sheet is "(omitted)".

Nope. Everything I listed was an undeniable fact.

You don't like the guy. Your analysis is twisting it so you can justify it.

Some of those are quiete clearly opinions. How can you prove Laverde was beaten by KPF due to lack of size for example.
By watching games. He got absolutely monstered by Taberner, for example, Hawkins as well (before Cameron went off and Stewart shifted to him), Daniher took 8 marks on him, Weideman (although that was mostly on the lead).

Okay, here's one: Laverde has lost the most defensive one-on-ones in the AFL this year.

Jesus Christ.

Is it surprising that contests are lost by the one constant in our key defensive stocks?

We're the worst defensive team in the league. I'm shocked to be sitting here that our full back has lost the most contests.

Did I not just post all of the reasons this stat doesn't really mean anything?

Go and look at the highlight of Taberner and tell me who would have stopped any of those goals. You want a slow player whose shins are 2-3 cm longer to play on him as though it will make a difference.

Not really, but it also highlights how he struggles to take on bigger key forwards.

I'm saying he plays better on medium forwards, and that we should be trying to facilitate that as much as possible. Do you disagree?

Worst defensive team in the league by what metric? Points against?

I would suggest scoring shots per inside 50 against would be a stronger read on the performance of our defensive unit — they can’t stop the inside 50s as that’s a failure further up the ground, but they can thwart the ability to score once they’re inside 50 if they’re any good.

18th for goals per inside 50
15th for scores per inside 50
17th for overall opposition accuracy if you think that's relevant

surely its fairly obvious that not all inside 50s are the same...
