What's everyone's list of players currently in the 22 from the weekend that you could see in a flag side? Acknowledging that would likely be at least four years away?

Jones, Keays, Rachele, Dawson, Cook, Hinge, Schoenberg, Doedee, Butts
Gollant at a stretch.
Hamill and Berry still question marks for me.

That's 10 players. Long way to go.

McAsey, Pedlar, Soligo, Worrell, Thilthorpe, Newchurch, Parnell need to be given every opportunity going into the second half of the year.
Plenty of average or ordinary players play in premierships with stars around them

If we had Cripps / Walsh / Curnow / McKay we’d beat Carlton

We need high end players

at this point id rather billy in the ruck than ROB.. given how bad ROB is..

and at least Billy has an elite boot when it comes to field kicking.

ROBs kicking makes me want to vomit in my mouth.
I’ve got a feeling Thilthorpe ends up our 1st ruck . Hopefully we can find another good ruck/ forward that can play in tandem as that would be very dangerous and not something we’ve had

And before anyone says it’s not workable look at Gawn and Jackson . It’s workable if the players can run and are mobile like Thilthorpe is

Having said all that we’ve got a few other more pressing issues

Here's the last few different premiers and their 'trough to peak cycle time':
  • Melbourne: 8 years (their peak from the win in 2021; finished bottom four 16/17/17 across 2012-14 so take the midpoint 2013 as the 'trough')
  • Richmond: 8 years (their peak from the flag in 2017 (note of course they managed to plateau at the top and win three flags); finished bottom two in 2009-10 so take 2009 as the 'trough')
  • West Coast Eagles: 9 years (their peak from the flag in 2018; finished second last (15th) in 2008 and bottom (16th) in 2010 so take the midpoint 2009 as the 'trough')
We've finished bottom four the last two years (2020-21) so the question is whether we've actually 'started the climb'...if we're bottom four again (likely) this year and then go up from there then an 8 year forecast from 2021 (the midpoint of a three year bottom out) would put us on trajectory for a flag in 2029...knowing of course that most rebuilds don't reach the peak and fail and need to start again.

Edit:
Perhaps a useful addition to the list:
  • Western Bulldogs: 4 years (peak from the win in 2016; trough from bottom four in 2012 and 2013)

West coast were 2nd bottom in 2008, bottom in 2010. Top 4 in 2011 and played in a grand final in 2015

Futile exercise.

I don’t think Hamish has nailed it, but it’s a bit rich to do a hindsight review like this one.

You cannot compare what we have missed, you should compare the average output at those picks with what we got. It won’t read well either.

Not sure I agree with that. You might get an average rotational player, who makes the 22 but in a low value position, who is a significant overpay for the position drafted in.

For example if you’re picking in the top 10 of the draft, you don’t want an average back pocket.

In that situation you would have been better trading that draft pick rather than what you got from using it yourself

If posters could only have 1 change, what would it be?

For me ROB just has to be replaced with Strachan as has been ordinary in all but a game or so.
Very good question.

The answer you gave is probably the right one, but it's very thought provoking

If only 1 change was possible this week, I would drop Frampton. I don’t particularly care who replaces him, but he has not put in the level of effort required defensively two weeks in a row and has had roughly 10 goals kicked on him as a result. You would struggle to find a worse tall defender in the AFL. Sure, his field kicking is lovely for a tall bloke. But he simply cannot defend and we can’t allow that to be ok.

Some good ideas going around on options to shift the model a little.

Ruck: ROB definitely needs to go back to the SANFL and demand selection. The idea of Frampton playing ruck is a good one along with the obvious of Straughan. Would be lose anything by dropping ROB and Himmelberg and rotating Straughan and Frampton through ruck and forward. Both very good by foot which is what we need.

Back: with Frampton out of defense, would we lose anything by playing Worrell in his place? Not quite the height at 194, but at a push you could always swing Billy back and Worrell forward during a game.
Or they persist with Billy and move Worrell as a third tall.
Would prefer to see Dawson up on a wing with Hinge left at back
Brown is the other concern down back but it's Parnell, Milera and Mcpherson as replacements

Middle: the big area of concern. I think it's time for Laird to go to HB for periods as he gives us better drive from the back half and has gone handball crazy. Swap with Jones to give Jones midfield time as he's a great tackler with speed. Leave Hately for another week, Berry is doing well, Schoenberg is still shite, but I would love to see Doedee roll through there along with Hinge, Dawson and Murphy (more).

Forward: Gollant needs a rest and potentially Berg. The one player that should get a look is Newchurch with FOG and McAsey presenting well in the SANFL.

Plenty of potential changes, coaches wilL do none of it!!

I watched some of the footy shows last night and there seems to be a focus on North & how they get out of where they are so I listened in because it's relevant to us as well. They talked up a defence first mindset and to make it harder to score against you before you worry about being attacking etc. We obviously are very easy to score against for a multitude of reasons. One being our defensive players aren't all that great (butts / doedee excluded) and also due to lack of pressure from midfield due to our slow midfield. I started to think about when our midfield got so slow, it was probably when we decided to turn laird into an on baller. Not just due to him but the mix we were adding him into was already slowish. I reckon it's time to move laird back and he can help sort out our defensive issues. It also frees up a rotation on ball. It's a win win IMO

I don’t understand why Murphy doesn’t get some centre bounces
Because.....STACKED!!
Homer Simpson Thinking GIF

Unfair to blame the defenders IMO. I think 74 Inside 50's is the 2nd most we have conceded in our clubs history.

Our season is now officially cooked, so its all about RD 1 - 2023.

I would keep our back 6 similar to previous weeks with Smith replacing Sholl.

Jones Butts Brown
Smith Frampton Doedee

I would replace Murphy with McHenry. Give Gollant a couple of weeks off and bring in Pedlar.

Rachele Himmelberg McAdam
McHenry Walker Pedlar

Midfield:

Hinge Laird Dawson
ROB Keays Berry

Int:
Cook, Hately, Schoenberg, Hamill

Ins:
Smith, McHenry,Pedlar

Outs:
Sholl, Murphy (inj), Gollant

I like that we put Hately on Cripps. Think we give him another 3 weeks in the guts and let him run with Neale, Steele, Danger.

Think the key is getting players like Hately, Cook, Hinge, Hamill, Pedlar, Berry a solid block of 10-15 games regardless of form.

Excellent idea

Brown is not as good as he was imo. Move Laird back to his spot and open up the middle to Murphy and others

Instant improvement
