Will Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher got some impressive reviews on the Draft board for their games against the Collingwood VFL side yesterday, although most rated another highly rated mid George Wardlaw as the BOG on the day.

Rich for me is the closest to the edge. I can see Zorko with another 2 after this year I reckon as he has shown that he can play behind the ball.

If Ashcroft comes our way the most exciting thing is that he will add to our current midfield. I would love to see Dev be a bit more patient and take Lyons spot in the midfield in a year or two but I can understand if he doesn't.

My gut says transition starts next year. Lyons the type who will decline quickly when it starts.

One positive of the Hawks win today - it may help us out with Will in the long-run (I can find silver linings in anything).

Obviously far too early to know how things will turn out at the end of the year, but with North likely in need of a KPP with their first pick, Essendon seems to be the only risk. It's a very good year for interstate clubs to be struggling.

Every win for the Bombers or North from here will be an added gift.

I must say I had a really similar thought today after the loss too.

With Essendon, I wonder if they'll see Ashcroft as a bit similar to their other midfielders they've got at the moment i.e. Parish, Merrett, Caldwell, McGrath are all similar sized midfielders (height and body shape) that are relatively similarly paced.

When you get the option of a player of Will'[s class, you jettison one of the others.

There was an article about Ashcroft in the Herald Sun yesterday, does anyone have a sub who can share here?

WILL POTENTIAL NO.1 CHOOSE OPEN MARKET?

Brisbane has been given no indication on whether father-son prospect Will Ashcroft will nominate for Lions in this year’s draft as the potential No. 1 pick continues to weigh up his options.

Ashcroft said on Wednesday that he was still yet to make a decision on where his future would lie.

Brisbane remains hopeful but far from confident that the Sandringham Dragons midfielder will choose to nominate for the club where his father Marcus won three premierships.

The 18-year-old grew up in Queensland but moved to Melbourne with his family at the start of 2018 and has begun a business and sports management course at Deakin University this year.

Likened to Carlton’s Sam Walsh, Ashcroft has starred as a 23rd man for the Lions’ VFL team in recent weeks and will get another chance to test himself at a higher level when he lines up for the NAB AFL Academy squad in their exhibition match against Collingwood’s VFL team on Saturday.

Academy coach Tarkyn Lockyer labelled Ashcroft a “true professional” who had no shortage of talent.

Far from confident? Lol. Bruh, we're confident.

Just more speculation. But the idea of playing finals etc in the first couple of years is a big carrot to ignore. I think we'll get him.

The fact that he trained with the Lions and played with the VFL team as well as the I'll always be a QLDer at heart comment - I'd say it's a very good chance

Did Murphy ever come up at all?
I don't think Murph ever wanted to come to Queensland and play footy there.

Contrary to popular opinion his dad was perfectly happy and even encouraged him to play with us. Marc was never keen on the idea.

Ashcroft on the other hand has shown a lot of interest.

Don't see "he trained with us and played for our VFL" as a signal one way or another.

You get any of potential draftee, especially one noted for their professionalism, and say "if you want, you can go spend 2 weeks with an interstate club. Live with an AFL player, train at the club, play VFL. Check out the standard. Your choice."

Any serious draftee would leap at the opportunity. It wasn't doing us a kindness. Definitely doesn't harm our chances though.

Zac Strom

Fremantle and Brisbane both showed strong interest in Strom during the pre-season supplemental selection period, but neither club was able to invite the South Fremantle utility to train ahead of the deadline because of his ineligibility. The 28-year-old chiropractor has built an impressive professional career away from football, but was prepared to put his life on hold when the Dockers and Lions showed interest in February and is still hoping they come knocking on June 1. The 198cm utility has been a star for South Fremantle in the WAFL for a long time and could plug some holes for AFL sides in the second half of 2022.

We don't have a spot for this year's MSD but it's interesting we were looking at a tall utility.

Good sign , Ashcroft will nominate us knowing he won’t go no.1
Thinking it more as a bad sign for us getting him as a F/S actually now, cause North Melbourne will definitely bid on him now with Pick 2 and that will allow him to stay in Melbourne with his family & friends (if that’s his preferred option over living in QLD) while if he went with Pick 1, he would have had to pack his bags and ply his trade in Perth and I would have thought he prefer to play his footy in QLD over than WA (if given those 2 options).

That's a great thing - no player in their right mind would choose North over Brisbane.

That is assuming that family and friends outweighs the despair and professional suicide of being a Kangaroo ...
