Matt Rendell’s take. Can be a bit sus but kinda interesting. Reckons we need a KPF and a KPD… which is the first time I think anyone has said another senior KPD is a need (as opposed to going to the draft). I guess that’s one vote for Liam Jones.

Personally I disagree needing another senior KPD. I’ll happily cop Reid/ Cox/ brand and even bzt coping a few baths next year if it helps their development in the long run. Look how SDK improved in his 3rd season and he looked a mile off last year. Sam Taylor for gws really started to play well In his 3rd season. Back in the young talls to have a big preseason and dangle the carrot of the spot at full back for who performs well over summer.

I agree with that

CHF is a problem. I think Jones is a gun 3rd with how he moves and can collect off the ground and create shots.
Elite small is bang on too. Tippa was such a loss on so many fronts.

KPD - I think we all agree Laverde is playing undersized. Slide him in where Heppell plays (up the wing too) and get a proper 2nd key defender for a couple of years whilst Reid, Cox, Brand & Eyre develop. Don't need another kid here.
I think we can survive without this for the short term but if the opportunity is there, we should take it. Jones would be a DFA signing.

I hope this is not true:

Bombers have their sights on Demon Brayshaw, have met with star midfielder

By Jake Niall

July 21, 2022 — 7.33pm

Essendon have met with Melbourne premiership star Angus Brayshaw in a bid to lure the free agent to the Bombers.

Brayshaw, 26, recently met with Bombers coach Ben Rutten and football boss Josh Mahoney, as the free agent considers his options for what will be the biggest contract of his career.

Sources familiar with Brayshaw’s situation and conversations said the Demons had a long-term offer in front of him, and that the 2021 premiers had more confidence in the free agent signing a new deal than in their out-of-contract and in-demand star, ruckman Luke Jackson, who is being courted by Fremantle and West Coast and has told the Demons that he has not yet decided on where he wishes to play beyond 2022.

Melbourne’s dealings with Brayshaw have been transparent, with the Demons made aware of Essendon’s interest and also that of Fremantle, where his brother Andrew has become their premier midfielder.

Essendon have been an aggressive suitor of uncontracted players from other clubs lately, having also made a strong play for Gold Coast’s talented small forward Izak Rankine, who has been happy with the Suns, but remains unsigned.

Melbourne sources said that Brayshaw had given no indication he wished to leave the club, but that they did not take his signature for granted until it had been completed. Remuneration is not expected to be a major issue with Brayshaw, who has been paid more than $600,000 in his current contract and will earn more in the next deal; it is more a case of his career path and whether he is satisfied with playing his role at an exceptionally strong team, or if he would like greater responsibilities elsewhere.

Essendon’s pitch to Brayshaw - and indeed that of other clubs - is understood to centre on the fact that he would play as a frontline midfielder, whereas he has spent much of 2021 and 2022 on the wing and at half-back respectively. Brayshaw is seen as a contender for a half-back flank spot in the All-Australian squad this year. Mahoney knows Brayshaw well from their days at Melbourne together - the former having been football operations manager there - and knows of his leadership qualities.

Brayshaw has been consigned to the wing and half-back - and excelled in both roles, underscoring his versatility - because the Demons have superstars Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca in the centre square and view Jack Viney as a primary midfielder. Brayshaw has been deployed in other positions, despite his midfield capability, in part because he can play those roles more effectively than other midfielders.

But if he went to another club, such as Essendon, he would be in the starting midfield. The Bombers also lack for size and strength in their midfield, compared with the likes of Melbourne, Geelong and Carlton. Their on-ball brigade is headed by smaller playmakers Zach Merrett, Darcy Parish and Dylan Shiel, with Jye Caldwell and others in support.

Jackson has the option of going home to Perth and playing with the Dockers, where he would share ruck duties with Sean Darcy, doing the same with Nic Naitanui at West Coast, or remaining as understudy to champion skipper Max Gawn at Melbourne. The Demons have outlined a ruck succession plan to Jackson in which he would take over as the primary ruckman in the next few years, and are awaiting an answer from him. There appears little likelihood that Melbourne would lose both players.

What do you think James Stewart would do at Melbourne?

I'm not suggest they are setting their sights on a player who has inexplicably become depth for a bottom 4 side but he's everything their key forwards, McDonald aside, aren't.

He's big, powerful and a hard working competitor, much too good to be playing VFL as a 28 year old.

He'd be a handy addition to any list as he's only 28 which is still youngish by KP standards, and he can play forward and back. I hope we keep him. Harry, Flip, Cox, Reid and Stringer have all had injury concerns of their own so giving up 1 list spot for insurance in 2 positions is a no brainer. He is still capable of forcing his way back into the best 22 too

Not that im interested in him for us but Matt Crouch is 27 years old, former AA, BnF in a grand final year, averages 28 disposals, 4 tackles and 5 clearances a game over his career. Will be getting traded for absolute peanuts. Once a club tells a player to pack up and find a new club they cant expect anything of value in return.

Seems to have lost a bit of a speed post his groin issues - not that he was lightning quick to begin with.

Crouch and a future 3rd for a future 5th if they are that desperate to get rid of him. He’ll play VFL next year
I think you have the two picks mixed up. It'd be Crouch and F5 for F3

I'm offended for him that he's depth in a side that plays BZT.

Crouch is a contested ball bull with only decent foot skills who's defensive running capacity has never been strong. He's also rather slow these days.

If we got him I could see him being our new whipping boy a month into 2023.

Pass.

No he's not.

He's an accumulator. Horrible player.

North should be all over it. Need a mature body in the middle, will cost minimal picks-wise, and helps them hit the salary cap floor.

Worst case scenario he's injury cover for Cunnington for a couple of years until Phillips / Powell / Horne-Francis are ready to carry the midfield load.

weird that they said they weren't offering him a contract, yet he is contracted for next season

i don't think Adelaide know how leverage works.

My guess is that they're advising him now that he is:

A: Not going to get a contract beyond next year
B: Is unlikely to get minutes in the senior squad due to us rotating new players through there

No harm in letting him know now so that his managers can get to work finding him a new home, otherwise he's decent depth for us next year and can spend his time in the SANFL. No one wanted him under free agency last year coming off his injury, but he's still an absolute quality inside mid, he's just not as good as Laird or Keays, and having all 3 of them in there doesn't work for us.

Really good article here about how AFL teams with cap space (including Crows) can basically sell their cap access for trade value, which is what i'd imagine might happen here in terms of selling Crouch to a team without adequate cap space, where we might cover the entire last year of his wage in return for a better draft pick outcome as what we might get from a general trade or compensation

BZT has been good enough recently. Stewart wasn't the issue though earlier in the season in my opinion when he was dropped
He got injured and others moved past him with their opportunities more than him being dropped (which he should have been FWIW, got embarrassed a few times)

My recollection was that he wasnt in the best form of his life, had the goal line clanger etc but our main issue then was how cleanly and often the opposition were delivering the ball inside 50. Due to our team defensive issues
