This was an enjoyable night.

I asked Westy a question I've been wanting to ask him for years:

Is it true at the 2000 Brownlow Medal, the West Coast players seated behind you who had played against Woewodin in the final round told you that he was quiet in the final round and they congratulated you for winning the Brownlow?

His response:

Going into the final round, Woewodin was one vote ahead. The West Coast players mentioned to me, "If you get one vote you tie, if you get two votes you win. Woewodin won't poll in the final round because we kept him to nine possessions." When he polled two votes to win the Brownlow, the West Coast players apologised for getting my hopes up.

I thought there was a chance that story was BS but he confirmed it's true!
So rigged. It was shameful.

During the audience interaction, Hawk grabbed the mic and said, "I've got a question for you, Westy."

He continued, "Last year there was a social media moment you were involved in where you had some choice words to say. What was going through your head? Tell us how you were feeling."

Westy answered it very well. He mentioned Hawk had totally caught him off guard and it's the first time he has been asked about his Twitter post in an open forum. He mentioned he was good friends with Bevo and his regretful words has affected his relationship with him. He is still trying to mend that relationship and acknowledged it's a work in progress. His reasoning was that he was being a father figure and showing Rhylee his full support.

He also mentioned his wife works at the footy club so that has also had a negative impact on her. Westy expressed his disappointment that a journo asked Rhylee about his father's social media comments. He said something along the lines of Rhylee shouldn't have to put up with that and it's totally unfair.

That's actually the short version. He mentioned about four times that he regrets his words and if he could take it back he would, and he thanked Doug for asking the question.

The entire audience (led by Doug) gave Westy a round of applause.

When did this happen?

Haha, you haven't been reading the last few posts, have you? ;)

Last night :thumbsu:
Correct lol

I’m glad there’s been some acknowledgment by Westy that what he did was wrong. Never a good thing having parents speak out publicly against the club for reasons such as that. Especially being club greats. And to hear he’s actively trying to make things right is great to hear.

I’ll happily jump back on the Rhylee bandwagon now 😆

Had a call from someone at the club today. Asked about how I feel about the digital entry on my phone and thanking me for 47 years of resilient service. I'm getting a signed card from the AstroNaught :)
I had a call today which I missed (It takes me a bit of time to get to my phone in the living room when I'm "indisposed"). I called the number back thinking it might be one of my Aged Care helpers. The answering machine said it was from a sporting club that I supported and they'd call back. I await the call with bated breath.

I've shook hands with two of those legends in recent years as they presented me with my Sons of the West end of program souvenir in Ballarat. Liber was pretty good the year we had him, but Hawk was fantastic the year before - repeated everyone's name as they got presented, and a quick word of encouragement. And really happy to pose for a photo afterwards, said g'day to the family. Makes such a mockery of the 'village idiot' persona I suspect he was ill-advisedly urged to maintain on TFS years ago. He's no rocket scientist, but Hawk is a really great people-person. And a great unofficial ambassador for the club.

Listening to the latest Danny Boyd podcast (with Fletcher Roberts) the boys mentioned prior to the 2016 season, the entire group were made to watch the 2015 Elimination Final. They analysed every kick, mark, bump, tackle, turnover, etc.

Perhaps we should do this every year following a finals loss?

Who says we don’t

Josh Dunkley has chipped on to save this Gippsland pub.
