I can see your point if the recruiters have someone in mind they think can be a better prospect and that's the only way to put them on the list. But even in that scenario I reckon they'd sooner dump Weideman who is contracted on way less money anyway.

They're not going to sack contracted players for a player in the 5th round that the recruiters have no hope for.
yeah you could be right. What I would do is often different to what the club would do. Hell, I would've played JVR all season at the expense of Ben Brown but alas Goodwin didn't. I would've changed the game plan after the first 5 weeks when it clearly wasn't going to hold up. What the club will do is often not what the club should do. I would not be chasing Grundy for instance. I'd offer him 300k a season tops. Which Collingwood would never accept.

Offering an outside personal view. I watch all Dees games due to other family members being Melb members.

Overall net positive but like at the Dogs, some hard truths need to be shared at the Sorrento camp:

1. Your team is still very, very good and is in the age bracket to be capable of winning flags for the next 3 years
2. I notice that Dees have the same arrogance problem that I have seen at the Dogs - senior leaders playing the man and not the ball, sledging and carry on, meanwhile hungrier teams get on with the job. They have passed you by in the process. Example: when Dees gave away 50m penalties against Swans, not a single Swans player went and sledged the Dees. It was similar to when 6 dogs players were sledging and wrestling 1 dockers player while the boundary umpire threw a ball in and we let Freo waltz away. Oliver needs a rocket and told to focus on winning the ball and delivering it to someone on your team, not a hurried kick forward to the opposition who sets up for it. He is picking fights everywhere and is distracted.
3. Your mids aren’t running as hard defensively (Oliver is as bad as Bailey Smith on this point). The stats that you’re getting outrun by 10km-15km each week is instructive on this point.
4. Ball delivery to the forward line makes life as a Dees forward pretty tough - irrespective of the cattle you have down there. Fix that before you have hopes for effectiveness of any list changes.
5. You were banged up fitness wise at the wrong time of the year, which is largely luck related
6. If Jackson goes, Gawn will benefit. Gawn is a liability outside of stoppages recently, whereas Jackson has been struggling for the same impact as when he mutilated the Dogs in the second half of the GF last year

Anyone know the context behind K Cornes comments on Pickett?

Was he saying SA clubs are chasing him or if Kozzie didn’t see his long term career at Melbourne?

Haven't heard what he has said but I wouldn't doubt sa clubs would chasing him, doesn't mean he will wants to return home.

I mean it is Cornes so take it with a grain of salt.

No doubt any club would be desperate to get him.

I took it more as SA clubs trying to lure him there, rather than him actively looking to leave.
No doubt he'd be getting other offers, so nothing to get too worried about at this stage imo

You'd be better off keeping him as depth than paying him plus whoever takes up his list spot. Plenty of spuds on the list who are out of contract to cut first.

While this is true, I'm not sure if you can but, if we could pay out his final two years in one go for the upcoming season (or if we have the cap space to do it is another question ) it could be beneficial to do so. If not then yes, we would absolutely keep him for depth.

Yeah not the worst idea but doubt we have the cap space for that. Might be wrong but in the past haven't we given players like Tmac extensions on the condition they take a pay cut? Like, instead of one year at 700k you can have two years on 400k.

Ben Brown is never depth. He offers nothing to this club. I'm not even convinced he is vfl calibre in my honest opinion.
I don't think he's a good fit for your side. He's not a contested mark - he plays more like a half forward who gets on a lead into space to get the ball, but without any mobility once it hits the ground.

The other option, which may make more sense than cutting him and paying him out is to offer to pay half his contract, if another club takes him off your list. I know he kicked 3 goals in the GF, but I'm not convinced his style of play really stands up in finals pressure, which might be why we had so much trouble getting any value for him when he left us, despite kicking 60+ goals in each of his last 3 full seasons.

no other club is taking Ben Brown. vfl at best

He had a very bad year, still though kicked a goal and a half a game. We won’t have the cap room to pick up anyone better, he’s contracted and worth keeping as depth.

1.5 goals a game for the main key forward in the second placed team is a horrible return.

Of course it is. He’s contracted though and worth keeping as depth. He can be what Mitch Brown is.

Yeah I agree with that. Absolutely no point getting rid of him under contract unless some team wants him for some inexplicable reason. He might come in handy if we need to rest someone next year.

i'd be telling Brown that there's a good chance that he's gonna be down the pecking order next and will play most the year at Casey. see if he wants to go on or maybe we can agree on a settlement if he doesn't.

Yeah, pretty much this. Just need to be straight and say - 'You're playing for Casey barring injuries'. Then if he wants to hang up the boots, fair enough and we'll come to an arrangement.

Just gotta get in his eye and look him in the ear.

Yeah there’s no point sacking Ben Brown when we have to pay him anyway. It’s not like he’s a cancer in the club environment, quite the opposite.

I’m sure if he’s told that he won’t be starting in the seniors he’ll take it in the right spirit and play decent footy for Casey.

It’s also worth remembering that we play him in a role directly opposite to what would suit his strengths. If we changed our forward 50 entries which we are going to have to do to be a chance next year, he’s still going to be capable of getting a game when required and kicking 2 or 3. Prefer him to be doing that as depth than sitting at home getting paid anyway.

Agree. I think his knee has given him a lot of grief 2nd half of this year. Maybe we only play him in 4-5 week blocks with a couple weeks off in between to manage him more. His form to start this year was very good.
