I fully understand the tricky nature of discriminating against applicants.

My issue is that the current state of this club is such that entertaining the idea in the first place was always going to lead to more controversy and signs of ineptitude from its leaders. He comes from a background of overseeing dodgy banking practices which would be enough to give you reservations to begin with. Im sure that a switched-on board would use its values as way of steering around the appointment of someone affiliated with a known discriminatory institution like City on a Hill.
Given he is a board member you’d be able to legally look into his employment with Church on a Hill I guess…..but clearly at this point it’s completely clear there was no formal process because if there was, you’d progress straight to the next best candidate rather than starting the process again which they’re doing.

Reporter: is this something you could have found out earlier?

Pres: no because it's against the law to ask anybody their religious preferences in an Interview

surely you can ask a candidate what boards, orgs, etc etc, you act on as a board member, trustee, etc etc? that seems entirely reasonable, just as not being allowed to ask people what churches you may attend as a parishioner is entirely reasonable

Statement re. Essendon Football Club CEO:

Yesterday was one of the proudest days of my life. To be offered the role of CEO of the Essendon Football Club - who I have followed since I was a boy - was a profound honour. At last night’s Crichton medal, I could hardly contain my passion and wonder at the opportunity. I love the club, love the people, and was incredibly excited about the work ahead. I had seen a picture of a club that was not as broken as feared, and that with leadership and focus, could rebound strongly.

However, today it became clear to me that my personal Christian faith is not tolerated or permitted in the public square, at least by some and perhaps by many. I was being required to compromise beyond a level that my conscience allowed. People should be able to hold different views on complex personal and moral matters, and be able to live and work together, even with those differences, and always with respect. Behaviour is the key. This is all an important part of a tolerant and diverse society.

Let me be clear - I love all people, and have always promoted and lived an inclusive, diverse, respectful and supportive workplace - where people are welcomed regardless of their culture, religious beliefs, and sexual orientation. I believe my record over a long period of time testifies to this.

Despite my own leadership record, within hours of my appointment being announced, the media and leaders of our community had spoken. They made it clear that my Christian faith and my association with a Church are unacceptable in our culture if you wish to hold a leadership position in society.

This grieves me greatly - though not just for myself, but for our society overall. I believe we are poorer for the loss of our great freedoms of thought, conscience and belief that made for a truly diverse, just and respectful community.

My faith is central to who I am. Since coming to faith in Jesus 20 years ago, I have seen profound change in my life, and I believe God has made me a better husband, father, and friend. It has also helped me become a better leader. That is because at the centre of my faith is the belief that you should create a community and care for people, because they are created by and loved by God and have a deep intrinsic value.

As it happens, I do sometimes disagree with things I hear in church - but I believe strongly in the right of people to say them, especially when taken in context. Reducing complex matters to a sentence is dangerous. Australia has a long tradition of diversity and religious freedom, and that must include preserving space for religious people to be able to express their religious beliefs.

I am saddened by these events. I wish the Club success, and thank Dave Barham in particular for the opportunity he gave me. I hope the external review leads to great change. I am truly sorry that I will not be able to work with the whole Essendon team, and Brad Scott and Josh Mahoney in particular.

Statement from Thorburn

I don’t understand your link here. Why have you brought up Andrew Bolt? Can you reference a single thing he has said that is homophobic? I assume you’re just a typical “go-with-the-flow” lefty who has been told that Andrew Bolt is Satan and has just decided to believe it, but I’m actually serious when I ask you - what has he said that is homophonic? I’ve read him for years and don’t recall a single thing.
That’s concerning.

"as far as the climate scientists know there is no link between climate change and drought".

LOL. He is also a conservative which means automatically that every opinion he has is racist, sexist and homophobic, regardless of what that opinion is. I think AOC said cutting taxes was racist because it advantages white people. These people are seriously deranged.

If you read the statement by the club this is the most important paragraph:

The Board made clear that, despite these not being views that Andrew Thorburn has expressed personally and that were also made prior to him taking up his role as Chairman, he couldn’t continue to serve in his dual roles at the Essendon Football Club and as Chairman of City on the Hill.

i.e. the club would have asked him to publicly distance himself from some of the most distasteful viewpoints of the church he's chairman of, and he wouldn't.

This is cancel culture folks. It is never because a bunch of blue-haired non-binary kids are tut-tutting on Twitter or whatever. It is ALWAYS a commercial decision. The Essendon football club will be impeding in building the commercial and community connections it wishes to with him on board. It is that simple.

The decision to part ways with him isn't the problem. That is the sensible one. The decision to hire him is the problem. Just like the decision to chase Clarkson without having an in-depth conversation with people from Hawthorn.

... says a man who can't accept scientific reality.

This was such a massive **** up that the President's role would be untenable if he himself hadn't been in the role for five minutes.

The ability of this club to make absolutely stupid decisions is surely unmatched.

All jokes aside, how can you actually bullet-proof a process to stop an appointment like this from happening? Check with the media first I guess to see if they have any dirt on the candidate…? 🤷‍♂️
Google him and see if he's on the board of any controversial organisations, just like the guy on twitter did
