This is such a misleading way to frame the trade. They're trading a second rounder and 800k in salary space which may be able to secure Rowell ect. People keep pointing to this like it has any relation to our trade.

If the PSD is an option for Brisbane over Dunkley, who have pick 16 in it, then it sure as hell is for us with pick 5 and a kid returning for family reasons.

Izak’s ability (or potential ability) is not being questioned, however.

Izak Rankine in this years draft, value would be somewhere between 4 and 6ish
Izak Rankine contracted, value would be pick 5 and next years 1st (possibly also a player)
Izak Rankine uncontracted with us having pick behind Port In PSD, probably pick between 6 and 10
Izak Rankine contracted with us having pick 5 in PSD, probably similar to Charlie, about pick 12 to 14.

Same player, different values.

People can put up as much draft highlights as they like, his ‘talent’ and ‘potential’ before being drafted was excellent, but his time at GC has shown only glimpses of that talent, and it certainly hasn’t produced any consistent form.

If you’re coughing up Pick 5 you want it to be for someone who ticks all the boxes, and he doesn’t. Cerra for example went for Pick 6, is a bonafide midfield gun that got traded to Carlton off the back of a brilliant run of form and DID tick all the boxes. Rankine nowhere close.

A lot of people on this thread trying to polish an absolute turd of a trade.

It's because the player nominating a club doesn't really mean anything concrete. It reduces one club's leverage but only by so much.

Three parties need to be satisfied for a trade to occur. Rankine nominating the Crows lets GC know that he won't be happy to sign off on a trade to a different club, so it reduces their opportunity to start a bidding war. But at the end of the day GC always have the option of saying "thanks but no thanks" and letting him walk. Likewise, the Crows have the option of saying "too expensive, sorry" and walking away with nothing. Obviously walking away with nothing is preferable to losing a player for nothing, so the upper hand should rest with the Crows for whatever it's worth. But the clubs still have to negotiate to reach a point where both agree.

no one doubts that Rankine is potentially going to be a star, but the fact is he hasn’t played at anywhere near the level of his draft position to this stage. In fact if the 2018 draft was redone now, then both Kings, Bailey Smith, Rozee, Butters and possibly Caldwell would all go before him. Pick 5 should never have been used, and certainly not mentioned until much later in trade week if it was our fallback position.

You can only buy shares at the price someone is willing to sell them at. Also Pick 5 has played 0 AFL games and shown nothing as well
