I'm not sure how they came to the 40th pick as the cut-off either.
The rule was brought in due to Marra getting to us, ok. Just make it first round exempt (even that's a stretch).
They should have just binned the 20% discount in the first round and made it 10% in the second round for both FS and NGA. At a practical level you already get your discount by being able to trade 1st and 2nd rounders for a points premium, you shouldn’t get the bonus 20%.

Last year we traded pick 17 and pick 52 into enough points to match a bid on Darcy at pick 2 which is just wildly unfair to other teams.

Should be able to still match but the deficit in points get taken off next years pick in the same round as the player is taken. If you rate them high enough you take the deficit or you let them go.
And a fair price is paid but you get the advantage of still developing junior talent. Can only have 1 NGA in a round though can't have multiple 1st rnd NGA talent that would be too big an advantage

They probably just need to tighten up who actually qualifies to be NGA. Is it a genuine talent that came to the game late or was primarily playing another sport or something else they are trying to achieve?
A lot of clubs don't have like 30+ kids in their system
They really focus on around 10-12 from 13 years old to 18

Since there are a lot of restrictions on talent grabbing
Don't have the entire list on who's x y and z but know it's like 1% of talent are eligible

That would have been a much better fix for the Academy picks. You still get to priority bid if you want them, but no discount in the first round and only 10% in the second.

Happy for the full 20% discount to stay for father-sons though (at least until we run out of good ones 😃).

Are these on our NGA list?

50 goals as a junior in any league is impressive, let alone as an underager. I do quite like the older Chatfield running around for Footscray so hopefully Jyah keeps on developing.

Jyah’s dad coaches the Senior team for Russell’s Creek. Jyah played a couple of senior games this year. Jyahs dad Danny and Marra’s dad Aaron played together for East Warrnambool a few years ago. I believe they all played together in a seniors game Marra played for East. Jyah also has a younger brother that will be pretty good Kobi.

Hopefully he develops to a real honest pick 41 or so in the draft, man what a shitty system.
Not to be repetitive but they just needed to bin the discount, not the whole system for any kid rated top 40. There is now so little incentive to develop NGA kids.

It's really staggering how reactive and short sighted the AFL is...
Northern academies aren't fair.. let's give everyone academies... A club gets a good player via academy... Let's discourage clubs from developing players in their academies!

Yep bin the discount and probably tighten the rules a bit to make sure only those who really should be eligible, are eligible.

Is NGA development spending excluded from the soft cap. You would hope so given there is a positive social value and little gain to the clubs any more.

It's actually worse than that. If a club identifies truly elite NGA talent in their zone, they are incentivised to stifle their development. Insanity

Yes, my kids are eligible due to my wife being born overseas. Which is crazy to only require one overseas born parent.
Is that really the regulation lmao, both my parents were born overseas but moved here at a young age and I was born in Melbourne and played footy my whole life - does that mean I would eligible 😂😂

That’s crazy if so
