Unfortunately some of the names mentioned eg Houston, wouldn't have been considered as captaincy material for the Maggies 25 years ago ( but neither would have Mr ski slopes of work, life, balance fame ) so Wines will get the job by default as his only real challengers for the role in Butters and Rozee need to be allowed to concentrate on their own games for at least a few more seasons.

Whether he will be up to it is of course the great unknown, but I suspect it will only go one of two ways in that with extra maturity since the two captains debacle he will handle the job much better, or he will be like his predecessor and be pretty much a non event at the caper.

It was incredibly selfish for a washed Jonas to keep the captaincy this year

Every other captain in our history would have stood down

Things Tom Jonas Doesn't Understand:

Standing Down.

Imagine talking about work life balance when you don't even work a proper job, f****** lol.
6 weeks leave after last game, 2 more weeks over Christmas / New Year, 2 four day breaks between Jan 4 and first pre-season game, plus a 4 day break any round they aren't playing, so bye and pre-finals bye (if in finals). So 8 full weeks, plus some extras. Most of us that are wage slaves would kill for that 'work life balance', even before you talk about the salary and how players the ilk of Cameron Ling end up with stunners rather than venting on Incel message boards. #sackjonas

Wines and Houston as VC. He was removed from the leadership group due to the Covid incident. He has matured significantly since and should be returned to the leadership group. I love Burton, but tbh I don’t want another defender as captain, it just doesn’t work.

Captains and forwards (unless they can push up the ground like Tredrea could) find it hard to turn games themselves, by trying to lift the team by example. Ideally we'll have a defender in the leadership group (as well as a forward), but not as Captain.

Wines will be a good captain. Gives me the impression he knows it’s a big deal, would love to prove himself as a good captain after missing out on it after the co captain debacle.

Could help him improve a bit too.

Jonas is one of the all time uninspiring captains. Plays a niche defensive role where he can’t play on talls, can’t play on smalls, uses the ball poorly and will be 32 at the beginning of the 2023 season. If Port think they’re in the window they say they are, or even if they decide to go down the development route, Tom Jonas should be staring down the barrel of playing twos next year.

Travis Boak was younger than Jonas is now when he gave up the captaincy.

Dude will hang on to it until it is dragged from his lifeless body. A much greater professional and player than you knew when to hand it on. Read the room.

He can only answer that sort of question one way, and that's in alignment with the type of leader he would evoke if the players chose him as captain again in 2023. I respect that. It's not exactly a decision on one mans shoulders.
I don't believe they will vote him in to be captain in 2023 but I appreciate the call to arms in his response.

Jonas and Sloane are both being selfish if they don't hand over the baton.
I think it has to be Ollie my only concern is that he said he was struggling with being the reigning Brownlow medalist 🤷 but if he wants it he deserves it.
