I took my little out trick or treating the last two years, given the lengths I've seen people and even full streets go to, I very much beg to differ with this statement.

Drove to one street (Orange Street in Bentleigh East) this year, the surrounding streets were log jammed with cars trying to get through, the street itself had hundereds and hundreds of people walking through it. Go there next year and tell me "It's not celebrated here"!

I had about a dozen groups of kids trick or treat our place this year - so clearly they didn’t get the memo. Nor did the multiple Halloween house parties I went to in my younger days. Much like hot cross buns appearing in December, Halloween is just something the angrier boomers and Xers love to yell at the cloud about while the rest of us have fun and enjoy hot cross buns on Boxing Day.

And it has everything to do with boomerism. The only people I ever hear complaining about nonsensical non-issues like Halloween, hot cross bun sale dates etc are boomers or maybe the later cohort of Gen X. It's older people who clearly have enough comfort in their lives that they spend their free time getting angry at other people having some fun. I mean if you're content with your worldly priorities that kids putting on some costumes and getting some lollies is enough to rankle you - power to you. I have actual things to worry about.

My kids are grown up now but they’d group with a parent and do the rounds

I used to think on super crap but the day has a really nice friendly vibe to it. Pre boomers would like it as it’s more like pre TV years when people got out in the street and related.
These days we relate to strangers on the net whom we’ll probably never meet

I wish I had of taken video of the Beaumaris concourse. It was like Chadstone 3 days out from Christmas with kids and parents dressed up and trick or treating.

Amazing to see, especially for someone like me who grew up in rural Vic where Halloween didn’t exist and had parents that still gripe about “we’re not bloody yanks”, which I admit I said similar until I saw how much the kids loved it down here.
