Without creating a separate thread, I'm wondering if anyone still has or uses a Melway/Sydway/UBD?

Yeah I know most cars are gps equipped and the occupants will likely have a smart phone, but when all that fails (extremely unlikely at once), can you navigate without modern tech and rely solely on maps/brain?
The fun days when I use to turn the melways upside down trying to work out where to go. I must say I’m a sat nav guy now

I work in a very tech-heavy role (sys engineer/tech ops) but keep things pretty simple at home.

Recently renovated my house and haven’t got anything fun installed like smart lights or network points.

I think consumer level products are generally gimmicky and tend to need to ve replaced within a couple of years as technology evolves.

The only things I have purchased recently that fall in this category are an Apple Watch and AirPods which I bought specifically for running. Besides that I still use wired over-ear headphones when I work and play games on a console because I cbf building or maintaining a computer.

I even bought a push mower the other day lol.

I think the last time I used a Melway was the 2009 edition. This was just before phones were capable enough to use GPS properly on smartphones without getting delayed updates.

I guess it depends? Don't GPS apps only need network data if it's just updating hazards/accidents/roadworks?

What l like about the car / google GPS thing is the nice lady in the satellite with her binoculars on our car telling us which way to go.

I turn off voice navigation, I don’t like my music being interrupted by someone telling me where to go.

I am annoyed that android auto will now only run when connected to the car. If I'm running android auto and hit the media button the car used the phone's media files not the ones that are loaded onto the car's storage. As a result I sometimes use Here We Go on the phone for navigation and also run the cars navigation so I can use the car's media files. That way I also get a second opinion on the direction to my destination.

Android Auto is better however so I use it when in unfamiliar territory (more than six blocks from my house).

It is so advanced no one actually knows what the little box does. It some say has something to do with aliens. Apart from that and BF the rest you can stick up ya clacker.
hah . Yep Im with you. Got absolutely no time for social media crap or tick tok. I go fishing in some of the best scenery on this planet. Nothing on a screen comes even close to that. No cell reception either so good luck texting, calling or tracking me.

Have a love hate relationship with Tech. I'm bloody awesome at snake, have an electric tooth brush and can use Turbo Defrost on the microwave. But I've tried those cigarette rolling machines and they don't give the authentic cone shape I like so I still manually roll my joints.
a round baler is effectively just a giant cigar rolling machine, problem is your trying to roll a cylindrical object but often end up with a cone shaped object :-(

I think we're at the very tail end of an age of excess that will look absolutely insane to every future generation. The first world has been on a resource spending spree, destroying the environment to build absurd suburban sprawl and car dependent infrastructure that can't possibly be sustained, coming up with all this new technology that only serves to trick people into wasting their time while being psychologically manipulated and experimented on.

I think with any piece of technology, and with any transaction in general, you have to ask "who benefits?" Is technology being pushed on me because it's actually a convenience, it'll make me happier, it'll allow me to access things I never had before, or is it a trick to get me to give more of my money to specific organisations? Often the answer isn't a clear cut one or the other, it depends how you use it, etc. But I know with 100% certainty that I don't ****ing need smart lights when light switches already exist. The only thing that could possibly change is that a service crashes and suddenly your house is dark all the time.

But if it’s connected to the light switch couldnt you just turn it on and get normal light?
