We're desperate for mids, but what makes you think Reef is part of the solution? He doesn't have a midfield pedigree - maybe just covid related. He's got excellent attributes, but he's shown nothing to suggest that he knows how to contribute on the spread and most importantly rack up the kms required. At this stage, he looks like he should become a player, but midfield is currently a wishful hope, without much to support it.
I think it’s due to a few breakout games he played through the midfield prior to getting drafted. Picked up 30+ possessions and kicked goals as an insider. People who remember this naturally assume/hope it’s where his future lies at AFL level.

Just hope that upon his return from injury that they commit to playing Reef as an inside mid in the VFL

Don’t have many criticisms of Fly and co but one criticism is that they have played a bunch of kids as forwards (Kelly, Bianco, McInness) and it just sets them up to fail as forward was never their natural position in their NAB league days

This is the year. If he can keep healthy

The club's former Next Generation Academy graduate Reef McInnes pressed his growing claims for a round one appearance in Craig McRae's side with a goal and some clever instances of his skill in the forward half.

But the big sighting came from Reef McInnes, who played six games in 2022 but couldn’t tie down a permanent spot.

The 20-year-old showed a touch of class across the half-forward line, and at 194 centimetres offers good size for a medium tall, particularly given the loss of Ollie Henry to Geelong.

Really liked what I saw of Reef today. Think he will be a best 22 lock by the end of the season barring injury.
I thought he was excellent against Brisbane early last season before getting injured. If he keeps fit I'm confident he's got a bright future ahead of him.

Hope you’re right, we need something new coming through

I think Reef is going to be a top player for the Pies. He has the size, pace and poise required and loves to make a contest every time the ball is in dispute. When I compare his approach to AJ's there is a chasm between them when it comes to desire, desperation and determination.

That's a little harsh. McCeery, Ginnivan and AJ all contributed to our brilliant run last year- that's half of our forward set up made up of young guns coming through. Reef is another. Krueger would have been but for his brittle body and McStay is another addition.

Only negative for me was that AJ is going to struggle to get a game. McStay, Mihocek, Reef could be a pretty good combo.
Ash had no impact today. Clearly his fitness is an issue, stops him from moving from contest to contest.. and now, its looking like Reef is ahead of him in the pecking order.
I did warn people this could happen but nobody believed me.

The first and single most important requirement of excellence is the willingness to earn it.
