The West is reporting that Fyfe was pushed. He wanted to continue and even agreed to share the captaincy but was told no.

If this is true. . . I ******* love this club even more.

I highly doubt that the club would push out such a legend and a guy who has led thru such a tough period.

I think what Fyfe explained was the truth. Personally I thought all along the reason for the delay in the vote was because Fyfe was doubting if he wanted to continue in the role. If it were the club it would have been quicker imo.

Grubs trying to sell newspapers.

People think Fyfe's selfish. And you know what? He was, in the way that many of the greats are. If you look at the way Michael Jordan, or Don Bradman, or Steve Smith behaved, well, the way Fyfe behaved as a young bloke wasn't much different. Not that I'm saying Fyfe is any of them, but those very top level players tend to be extremely driven and focused, and they can't necessarily understand why their team-mates don't go the extra mile to be elite either.

The thing that sets Fyfe apart is the growth that you can see in him through his captaincy. He went from being that very self-focused elite guy to being a true team player. Anyone who's watched the team and how he interacts with team-mates over that period of time has seen the change, and also the change in how he plays. He's definitely got a nasty edge as a player (as do all the greats), but he's developed the abilty to temper it for the better of his team, and to take the wider view. Tackling and holding a guy up rather than throwing him down, to allow play to stop for an injury. Catching Freddy as he was going to fall on his head rather than just taking off after the ball. He's really grown.

Fascinating to hear him speak as well - the average footy player in interview is about as articulate as the average golden retriever. "Yeah, so our plan today was to score more points than the other team...". They're not stupid, but on-the-run verbal analysis is just not their skill. Fyfe's genuinely articulate. He could end up a coach given how bright and analysing he obviously is (although I suspect he'll have non-footy things he wants to do).

Anyway, he's a great player, I think he's done a great job as captain, and I dearly hope he gets to end his career on a high.

New sports editor is trying to disrupt the club. Ignore.

The new Sports Editor of The West is showing his colours already. Jakeb Waddell is known for his intense dislike of Freo, and according to a Big Footy contributor, Fyfe in particular. The headlines are indicative of this.

This morning's headlines could have been a celebration of six years of dedication to Freo by Fyfe, but instead, the implication is that he was pushed to resign.

In the articles in this morning's paper, Glen Quartermain quotes three unnamed sources to support his point of view. Cowardly journalism at its best. How reliable are these sources?

These unknown sources (if they actually exist) would have been connected to the club. If so, I have lost all respect for Peter Bell and for the club's hierarchy. This was handled badly. Our club champion deserves better. There should be repercussions for these sources.

And no headline on the front page. Another snub to Fyfe and Freo by The West. Same as they did when Fyfe won his second Brownlow and the front page was about Willy Rioli.

Meanwhile, West Coast's champion dog, gets positive attention. And of course with the obligatory NicNat photo.

Need I say more...

Thanks for this analysis of Fyfe's contributions. Great job.

Yes, the defensive general is Pearce.

He was also acting captain all of last season.

I still can't think of any full backs who were captain.

I think we you taking the best forward, you have enough on your plate. Then being a defensive general and captain is too much, especially for Pearce who is injury prone.

Happy for him to be captain, but I think he should be joint captain with someone else.

Serong is only 21. A future captain for sure. But it's too heavy a crown for someone so young.
I recall the WA cricket prodigy Damien Martiyn as an unstoppable force. He was made WA captain at a young age and didn't handle the pressure at all - never lived up to his lofty trajectory. Giving the captaincy to very young guys can destroy their career - don't give it to a 21 year old.

Will Fyfe do a coaching diploma, and maybe instead if captaining us to a
Flag, coaching us to a premiership?
To me he already sounds. speaks so fluently that the transition would be
Seamless.
A premiership player and coach the dream is still alive.

It's very much this. The same people that bagged him for missing two set shots in the GF, say he was gifted a second brownlow, or that that the AA captaincy was a joke. The man has been a walking achievement machine since he started who has the audacity to carry himself with confidence while playing for the "small" WA club. His critics can't and never have been able to handle it.
Yeah I dug up some stats from the GF the other day that people forget, to focus on his couple of missed shots:
He was the second youngest in our 22 (Neale sub)
28 disposals(equal 1st out of 44 player)
18 contested possessions (1 of 44)
6 tackles (top 10)
5 clearances (3 of 44)
2 contested marks (3 of 44)

It's really irrelevant if he was pushed, and pushed could have been a simple, "think it might be time to give someone else a go Nat?"

Regardless, as Mags98 said, he had the shit job of captaining through rebuild and has had no issues stepping aside just as we are hitting our contending period. Either way, he's being a selfless leader and putting the club first.

I also love Minz reference to his growth. I remember seeing Zac Clarke roll his eyes at Fyfe when he tried to tell him something and it was pretty obvious when he started off as captain he didnt quite have a great handle on the job (something he's admitted himself) but he really grew into the role over the years to be a fantastic leader on and off field.

Cant wait to see full forward Fyfe take the comp apart over the next few years

Probably the same way players "choose to retire" without a tap on the shoulder but absolutely get a tap on the shoulder.
But this is the point, there likely was no actual tap. Greats in any field get the option of walking without any acknowledgement that there was pressure. In any case, they usually have the ability to read any tea leaves themselves. One famous exception was one of our great PMs, Bob Hawke, whose ego wouldn't allow him to accept that Keating had the numbers, and so had to be voted out of the job rather than stepping down at a time of his choosing.

You know who else also believes Fyfe was pushed???

A Newsreader on channel 9 last night gave his thoughts and said so, can’t recall his name but his last name was Pavlich.
